Mirror is a one movement piece for oboe and piano from the pen of Vincenzo Sorrentino that makes the most of the crisp articulation of the instrument. Syncopated rhythms and modern harmonies add spice to this piece.
Requiring nimble fingerwork (particularly in the demisemiquaver passages) and some stamina (142 bars long with few rests), this is a piece for the more able player that would make a great addition to the concert platform.

Gustav Mahler's symphonies tend to be scored for a large orchestra putting this wonderful music out of reach of many smaller orchestras. This arrangement whilst not simplifying the music attempts to remedy this by reducing the orchestral requirements. The original orchestration requires 3 flutes, 3 oboes, 3 clarinets, 3 bassoons, 7 horns, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings. Although in many of Mahler's symphonies each movement seems to be an integral part of the larger work, we feel that this movement can stand alone quite happily and offers a good entry to the symphonic world of Gustav Mahler.

The Hidden Face is a prayer for solo counter-tenor, oboe and a distant group of muted violins and violas. It tries to hold within it a whole tradition with nothing personal or idiosyncratic, as in ikon painting, though this is a severe challenge for a composer working at the end of the 20th Century. This overture is about the only work by Hamish MacCunn which is still performed, although he wrote operas, vocal, choral, and instrumental music as well as other orchestral works. It has a distinctly Scottish flavour and was used as the theme music to the BBC television series "Sutherland's Law" back in the 1970s.

The music of small forms was what the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) focused on. In 1874, after many years spent in the 'provinces', the teacher of Camille Saint-Saëns took the position of organist in Paris; later he not only worked as a church musician but also as a teacher.In the summer of 1887 Fauré wrote his Pavane Op. 50, originally intended for a concert providing light entertainment, which soon gained wide popularity as an orchestral setting with and without the chorus added by Fauré. The romantic, slightly melancholic melody is a catchy tune which, thanks to the present arrangement, can now also be performed soloistically with piano accompaniment.

These short movements make great stylistic exercises in baroque music. Not an easy play and requiring some stamina, the oboe part soars up to top F while the Cor Anglais part reaches top C. Rhythmically complex and working through some extreme keys, these are a rewarding challenge for advanced players.
