Reflections: Caricatures V by Jere Hutcheson. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Oboe 1, Oboe 2, English Horn, Soprano Clarinet (Eb), Clarinet 1 (Bb), Clarinet 2 (Bb), Clarinet 3 (Bb), Bass Clarinet (Bb), Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Contrabassoon Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Teno). Band Music. Grade 6. Score and parts. Duration 25:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.13010). The formal design for Reflections is very much like that of another recent composition of mine for wind symphony - Gradus ad Parnassum. In Gradus I pay homage to nine composers from the past. The music representing each composer is in the form of a caricature. The caricatures are separated by interludes. This new set of caricatures follows a similar plan with the intention of honoring a new set of composers. My goal has been to write music that reflects something of each honored composer's style and, at the same time, to interject my own playful treatments as they come to me during the compositional process. The ultimate challenge is to shape all these diverse elements, inspired from music composed over the past four centuries, so that the composition moves forward in the voice of just one composer - that of yours truly.Might some of my caricatures include musical quotes? Of course. Generally, quotes go only a few bars before I begin transforming the material in ways that I hope will be heard as fresh and entertaining. In some cases, what might be perceived to be a quotation is not, for I have striven to absorb the musical vocabulary and stylistic features of each composer and then to create a fitting parody. The interludes lead the listener from one composer to another, much as the promenade music of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition leads the viewer from painting to painting in the gallery.

This new work by Johan de Meij consists of a set of metamorphoses on a theme from Tchaikovsky's well-known Andante cantabile (from String Quartet No. 1 in D). Tchaikovsky stated, Never have I been so proud of my creative powers as when Leo Tolstoy sat in the chair next to mine listening to my Andante, and the tears ran down his cheeks. De Meij states the theme with a saxophone quartet (joined by oboes, bassoons and clarinets), followed by the first metamorphosis, which emanates from a single tone. A timpani solo forms a transition to Alla Marcia, in a neo-classical style. The following movement features the playing of tuned bottles, leading into an extensive marimba solo. This joins seamlessly to the finale, a canonic treatment of the theme, leading to a festive conclusion.

One of the best known of these, The Persistence of Memory, displays several limp timepieces in the foreground with a desert and lake in the background.2 Sammy Davis, Jr. - ShowTimeThe diminutive Sammy was a giant in the world of show business. Of his many talents, the one that delighted me the most was his tap dancing.3 Gertrude Stein - Pigeons on the grass alasGertrude was a master of nonsensical verse and stream of consciousness word sculptures. She could turn a phrase like no one else.4 Stephen King - All work and no play make Jack a dull boyAs Stanley Kubrick's film version of Stephen King's novel The Shining approaches its spine tingling climax, Wendy Torrance discovers that her demented writer husband, Jack, has filled hundreds of sheets of typing paper with the maxim All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.5 Marcel Duchamp - ReadymadeMarcel Duchamp anticipated pop art with his readymade sculptures. Two of my favorites are Rotary Demisphere and Bicycle Wheel.6 Felix Mendelssohn - Scherzo"Music that dances on its tiptoes," that's how I describe Mendelssohn's scherzo music.7 Kurt Vonnegut - Breakfast of ChampionsListen: It was the imaginary waitress at the imaginary cocktail lounge at the imaginary Holiday Inn who joked, "Breakfast of Champions" every time she served a martini.8 Alexander Calder - Forms in MotionAlexander Calder created ingenious and fanciful sculptures. Most famous perhaps are his floating airy mobiles. The artist also produced large immobile sculptures for parks, gardens, and public buildings called stabiles. My musical tribute to Calder is a sequence of five sound sculptures titled Forms in Motion.9 Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov - BumblebeeRimsky-Korsakov, composer of operas, ballets, and tone poems, is best remembered today for a handful of colorful works, each characterized by brilliant orchestration. Among these is the diminutive Flight of the Bumblebee. My tribute to Rimsky is simply titled Bumblebee.

God Is With Us is a celebration of a miracle: the appearance of God on earth in the body and human soul of Jesus Christ. C.S. Lewis calls this amazing birth "A grand miracle. Every other miracle prepares for this, or exhibits this, or results from this." The Incarnation is a sacred event so thrilling, so humbling, so mystifying that we must stand breathless in wonder and awe.God Is With Us tells the Christmas story using choir, soloists and a scripture narrative. The accompaniment may be simply piano and/or organ. If you have the resources, the magnificent full orchestration is available for purchase (there is a smaller chamber orchestration as well). As is always the case with major works, Alfred offers recorded orchestral accompaniment.God Is With Us is traditional in style, but features innovative twists and turns. It combines exciting and moving classical music by Faure, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Billings with some of the world's most loved Christmas Carols. It begins with the awe-filled simplicity of Gregorian Chant and concludes with a fun, festive journey through favorite carols with a Nutcracker flair. And in between, one experiences indescribably beautiful music, worthy of the celebration of such a glorious and miraculous event.God Is With Us is not difficult. It is intentionally composed and arranged with the average mixed choir in mind and it offers a heart-warming and joyful worship experience for choirs of all sizes and skill levels. Except for an occasional optional "high" note, vocal ranges are quite reasonable. The work is about 36 minutes long and is appropriate for churches with various worship traditions. So, with boundless praise and thanks, we encourage you to join us in exclaiming: Alleluia! God Is With Us!Full Orchestration includes: Flute 1 & 2, Oboe, B-flat Clarinet 1 & 2, F Horn 1 & 2, B-flat Trumpet 1, 2 & 3, Trombone 1, 2 & 3, Tuba, Percussion, Piano, Harp, Violin 1 & 2, Viola, Cello, and Bass.Chamber Orchestra includes: Flute, Oboe, B-flat Clarinet, F Horn, B-flat Trumpet 1 & 2, Trombone 1 & 2, Piano, Violin 1 & 2, Viola, and Cello/Bassoon.

Orchestra Music. Grade 4. Score and parts. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.14690). I. Overture: The LandII. The TreesIII. The WaterIV. The SkyV. The PeopleI have always felt more at home on a dirt road than on a freeway. One of my first explorations of Cowley County was driving the Grouse Creek road to Dexter. It was summer, and I was listening to Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring as I drove that evening, marveling at the farmland, the limestone roadcuts and winding road, the music providing a soundtrack to the sites I was seeing through my windshield like a movie. I later learned that I was in the Flint Hills. My explorations of our county further expanded to finding out more about its people and history, and later to lead tours of our limestone bridges, barns and buildings, many of which are in the Grouse Creek Valley. I've taken over 2,000 people out into our countryside in the last several years, and more than a few of these tourists have exclaimed, "Kansas ain't so flat!"Indeed. Our particular section of the state has some of the most breath-taking views I've seen anywhere. And if you love history, you'll find a treasure trove ranging from prehistoric tribes to Land Rush cowboys. Walking through a plowed field around here, you might find a stone axe, a mule's shoe or a rusted piece of farm machinery. This land we walk on every day knew hundreds of generations of feet before ours. Our land forms us more than we will ever know.I first saw one of Mark Flickinger's paintings several years ago, and this symphony is designed to be performed with his artwork projected onto screens on stage. His approach to landscape painting captures our land in ways that go far beyond my capacity for words. In my three previous symphonies, as in most of my compositions, I combine various arts with music, hoping to add depth to both. Mark's paintings have inspired this work from first note to last; I'll never tire of looking at them.So this is my hope for The Grouse Creek Symphony: that through the music and art, we can deepen our appreciation for what's in our own backyard. May we never take for granted the beauty of the land and sky, trees, water and people.Gary Gackstatter.
