Duration 9:00. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM163-SET). On 15 March 1811 Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) arrived in Munich looking for work. He must have begun his Clarinet Concertino almost at once: it was written for Heinrich Barmann, the clarinettist of the National Theatre, and first performed on 5 April, under the direction of the composer. The Clarinet Concertino consists of a slow introduction in c minor leading into a theme and a set of three variations.

Concertino Opus 26 (Klarinet Solo). By Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) and Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826). Arranged by C. Lhomme. For Concert Band. Arrangements of Classical Pieces / Solo Concerts / Clarinet Solo and Wind Band. Solo and Band Series. Grade 5. Score and Parts. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.010168060). Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was a pupil of Michael Haydn. Before he was fifteen years old he had already composed an opera, a mass and piano music. He was subsequently director of the Prague Opera House and Music Master at the Dresden Court. The overtures to his operas DER FREISCHa!1TZ and OBERON are still often performed by wind bands, though it is often lesser known that von Weber also wrote pieces for 'Harmoniemusik', such as a CONCERTINO IN C for oboe and small wind band. Von Weber wrote most of his clarinet works for the famous German clarinettist Heinrich Ba!!rmann (1784-1874). This was the case for his CLARINET CONCERTO No1 in F and his CLARINET CONCERTO No2 in Eb and for the CONCERTINO, all composed in 1811. Von Weber was very impressed by Ba!!rmann's virtuosity and the expressiveness of the clarinet. The CONCERTINO is one of the very great works of the classical clarinet repertoire. A slow introduction is followed by a cheerful theme repeated with several contrasting variations. This pre-eminently romantic clarinet piece was scored for symphonic band by the French composer and arranger Charles Lhomme (Hargicourt 1889).

Serenade, Op. 22 by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904). Arranged by Mikkelson. For Concert Band (flute 1, flute 2, oboe 1, oboe 2, clarinet in Bb 1, clarinet in Bb 2, bassoon 1, bassoon 2, horn in F 1, horn in F 2, violoncello, contrabass). Band Music. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 26:00:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11450). The Serenade in E, Opus 22, for String Orchestra was written at a pivotal time in Dvorak's career. He had composed symphonies, operas, and chamber music for more than 12 years prior, but had met with little success. In 1874 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for the first time on the the recommendation of Johannes Brahms, critic Eduard Hanslick and Johann von Herbeck. Brahms was so taken with the young composer that he introduced him to his publisher Simrock. Dvorak went on to become one of the most successful composers of his time. The Serenade in E, Opus 2, for String Orchestra was written in May of 1875, less than three years prior to the Serenade in D minor, Opus 44 for chamber winds, cello and bass. It was the Opus 44 Serenade that inspired this wind setting of the Opus 22 Serenade. Similar to Opus 44, Mikkelson has set the Opus 22 Serenade for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns, cello, and bass. Study of Dvorak's wind serenade and orchestral writing revealed aspects of the composer's scoring practices for winds, which were implemented in the current setting of the Opus 22.

He spent most of his life in Munich, studying at the Munich Conservatory and serving as principal conductor of the Munich Choral Society. He also taught organ, piano and composition at the Munich Conservatory. His reputation as an organ teacher was remarkable and students from around the world came to study with him. His students included Humperdinck, Wolf-Ferrari, Thuille, Sandberger, Kroyer, Trunk, Chadwick, and Furtwangler. Few of Rheinberger's compositions are performed today. Yet he composed 20 organ sonatas, 2 symphonies, 2 organ concerti, and a large number of vocal works. His wife Franziska was a poetess and Joseph set much of her poetry to music. His chamber music output included 3 string quartets, a string quintet, a piano quintet, 4 piano trios (one of which was arranged by the composer as this sextet for piano and wind quintet, RFE 42), 2 violin sonatas, a cello sonata and this octet which was later enlarged to his nonet (RFE 70) and which has been arranged by John Wilcox as a septet (RP 105).
