The word 'pandemonium,' invented by 17th Century English author John Milton, first appeared in his literary work Paradise Lost. Little would Milton have known that his word creation would be used so commonly in the 21st Century. With significant events occurring in contemporary times such as 9/11, the Pacific tsunami, and hurricane Katrina, the word pandemonium has been commonly attached to the state of riotous uproar, chaos and mass confusion.With an array of meanings, the word can be defined as: wild lawlessness, utter chaos, a place or scene of uproar or chaos, and more astringently as: the abode of all the demons or even, the capitol of hell. (Note the word 'demon' in the center of the word.)Beyond these definitions, the word can be used in a more personal context and describe a state of being that occurs in our individual lives upon being presented with tragic or startling news--a feeling of confusion and uncertainly. At other times, individuals may feel pandemonium when referring to their busy and overwhelming lifestyles. In yet a different and starker perspective, some individuals believe that demons can possess our lives at times and create a state of pandemonium within one's being.Commissioned by the Western/Northwestern divisions of the College Band Directors National Association, Roger Cichy's composition Pandemonium attempts to paint a wide array of meanings of the term. At times, the music may suggest catastrophic events that that have turned into pandemonium; other times the music may reflect a more subtle disposition and imply pandemonium on an individual level. Sometimes the music is intended to sound confusing and unsettling or eerie and uncertain. Moments also exist when the music sounds riotous or even martial. During one segment of the piece, Cichy has composed a sort of "march of the demons." In another segment, Cichy refers to it as "the dance of the evil spirits."The interpretation of what one hears is purely up to the listener. This is not meant to be programmatic music, Cichy states. "You are given certain qualities of sound, melody and musical impressions during each segment and you must choose your own definition.".

The PeopleI have always felt more at home on a dirt road than on a freeway. One of my first explorations of Cowley County was driving the Grouse Creek road to Dexter. It was summer, and I was listening to Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring as I drove that evening, marveling at the farmland, the limestone roadcuts and winding road, the music providing a soundtrack to the sites I was seeing through my windshield like a movie. I later learned that I was in the Flint Hills. My explorations of our county further expanded to finding out more about its people and history, and later to lead tours of our limestone bridges, barns and buildings, many of which are in the Grouse Creek Valley. I've taken over 2,000 people out into our countryside in the last several years, and more than a few of these tourists have exclaimed, "Kansas ain't so flat!"Indeed. Our particular section of the state has some of the most breath-taking views I've seen anywhere. And if you love history, you'll find a treasure trove ranging from prehistoric tribes to Land Rush cowboys. Walking through a plowed field around here, you might find a stone axe, a mule's shoe or a rusted piece of farm machinery. This land we walk on every day knew hundreds of generations of feet before ours. Our land forms us more than we will ever know.I first saw one of Mark Flickinger's paintings several years ago, and this symphony is designed to be performed with his artwork projected onto screens on stage. His approach to landscape painting captures our land in ways that go far beyond my capacity for words. In my three previous symphonies, as in most of my compositions, I combine various arts with music, hoping to add depth to both. Mark's paintings have inspired this work from first note to last; I'll never tire of looking at them.So this is my hope for The Grouse Creek Symphony: that through the music and art, we can deepen our appreciation for what's in our own backyard. This Quintet in C Major by an unknown eighteenth- century master, the full score and parts of whcih are published here for the first time, is the third of six quintets with identical instrumentation kept under shelf mark 1494 in the music archive of the Palacio Real in Madrid. These works are attributed to the composer Boccherini, although the name Boccherini is nowhere to be found in the manuscript. The quintets are probably attributed to him due to the fact that they all feature two 'bass' parts, thus pointing a finger in the direction of Boccherini as their composer.
