Trio D minor by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Edited by Michael Gallina. Mixed Ensemble. For Flute, Cello, Piano. Sheet Music. Published by Zimmermann (PE.ZM32460). ISBN M-010-32460-9. Arrangement of the original violin part by the composer. This Trio op. 49 for violin, violoncello and piano was composed in 1839. In a letter dated 21st March 1840 to Ignaz Moscheles, Mendelssohn mentioned an inquiry by the publisher Ewer in London to arr ange this trio for flute instead of violin. It is assumed that Mendelssohn either arranged the trio accordingly or at least authorised such an arrangement. Transforming the violin part into a flute part is quite astounding and was handled so freely and in geniously in a variety of aspects that we can only assume that the composer himself could dare to come up with the solutions in question. Interesting information as to the history and development of this edition is given in the preface.

Pandemonium by Roger Cichy. Arranged by M. McDermott. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1/2). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 6:40. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11070). The word 'pandemonium,' invented by 17th Century English author John Milton, first appeared in his literary work Paradise Lost. Little would Milton have known that his word creation would be used so commonly in the 21st Century. With significant events occurring in contemporary times such as 9/11, the Pacific tsunami, and hurricane Katrina, the word pandemonium has been commonly attached to the state of riotous uproar, chaos and mass confusion. With an array of meanings, the word can be defined as: wild lawlessness, utter chaos, a place or scene of uproar or chaos, and more astringently as: the abode of all the demons or even, the capitol of hell. (Note the word 'demon' in the center of the word.)Beyond these definitions, the word can be used in a more personal context and describe a state of being that occurs in our individual lives upon being presented with tragic or startling news--a feeling of confusion and uncertainly. At other times, individuals may feel pandemonium when referring to their busy and overwhelming lifestyles. In yet a different and starker perspective, some individuals believe that demons can possess our lives at times and create a state of pandemonium within one's being.Commissioned by the Western/Northwestern divisions of the College Band Directors National Association, Roger Cichy's composition Pandemonium attempts to paint a wide array of meanings of the term. At times, the music may suggest catastrophic events that that have turned into pandemonium; other times the music may reflect a more subtle disposition and imply pandemonium on an individual level. Sometimes the music is intended to sound confusing and unsettling or eerie and uncertain. Moments also exist when the music sounds riotous or even martial. During one segment of the piece, Cichy has composed a sort of "march of the demons." In another segment, Cichy refers to it as "the dance of the evil spirits."The interpretation of what one hears is purely up to the listener. This is not meant to be programmatic music, Cichy states. "You are given certain qualities of sound, melody and musical impressions during each segment and you must choose your own definition.".

Lamb of God by David Gillingham. Arranged by Michael Brand. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon, Bb Clarinet 1, 2, 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, 2, 3, Horn 1/2, Horn 3/4, Trombone 1/2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Piano, Timpani (3 drums), Percussion ). Grade 5. Score and parts. Duration 12:10. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.05240). Lamb of God is a tone poem based on the Christian story of the passion. The work is cast in five connected sections progressing to the chronology of the story. The motivic material, which unites the work, is taken from the Easter sequence, Victimae paschali laudesi ("Praises to the Paschal Lamb"). In the Catholic Church, the "Paschal Lamb" is representative of Christ who was sacrificed on the cross to redeem the people (or "sheep") of the world. The first section, O crux, portare talentum mundi ("O Cross, to bear the treasure of the world") seeks to depict Christ's torturous walk bearing his own cross. Motives from the Easter sequence are clearly articulated under and over dissonant harmonies and a regular march-like rhythmic drive. There is even the incessant cracking of a whip throughout the section. As the site of crucifixion nears, there is a quieting of activity, taking pause at the thought of death with the xylophone continuing the intensity. The walk then resumes to the crucifixion and segues into the second section, Dux vitae mortuus ("The leader of life is slain"). Announced by timpani and snare drum rolls, Christ is nailed to the cross. Muted bass drum and brake drum make the torture vividly clear. Crying dissonance in the ensemble, which grows with each successive nail, follows each nail. Intense suffering follows. An alto saxophone solo alludes to Hans Hassler's tune, O Sacred Head Now Wounded. This intensity grows to a climax on the penultimate strain of Hassler's tune. Sever chant-like statements follow this in piccolo, bass clarinet, bells and piano representing the final words of Christ. In the ensuing section, Sepulchrum Christi viventis ("I saw the sepulchre of the living Christ"), a timpani roll followed by three loud, grieving cries of the full ensemble signifies the stormy darkness following the death of Christ on the the cross. The section ends morbidly in C# minor. The vibraphone continues to sustain a C# into the next section, Surrexit Christus spes mea ("Christ my hope has risen"), which begins with small, but bright outbursts by bells and high woodwinds. The outbursts grow and begin to cascade joyously leading to dramatic strains of Victimae pachali laudes by the low brass. The section continues to grow in rhythmic and textural activity and finally reaches an apex in the key of C major. The final section, Agnus redemit oves ("The lamb has redeemed the sheep"), is a benediction in G major consisting of harp-like passages in the piano, chant-like motives and fragments of the Victimae paschali laudes. The work closes in Eb major, a chromatic change from G major which, to my ear, suggests eternity.

Franz Schubert: Quartetto D. 96, After Matiegka's Notturno Op. 21 (for Flute, Viola, Cello and Guitar). By Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Edited by Stephen Mattingly. For Guitar (Classical). Chamber Music. Chanterelle. Classic. Intermediate. Book. 88 pages. Published by Chanterelle (MB.ECH543). ISBN 9790204705436. Classic. 9" x 12" inches. Schubert knew and played the guitar well enough to compose for it as this work and the Cantata D-80 demonstrate. His reworking of Matiekga's Notturno by adding a cello part is a fine example of Schubert's involvement with the guitar.
