This arrangement of 'Away in a Manger' by Rebecca Faith incorporates two traditional melodies woven together seamlessly to create a refreshing interpretation of a universally familiar song. A verse of the traditional American tune is heard first on the piano before being interrupted by the flute taking over with the British melody. Piano interludes of the American themes return but never in full until the end of the piece where it returns to its original starting point. As much as the familiar melodies are recognisable they are laced with jazzy harmonies and a nonchalant improvisatory style. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. These beautiful arrangements require work on the part of both flautist and pianist, as with a demanding accompaniment they are very much a duo. The majority are for the advanced flautist, minimum grade 6-7 standard, as there are some complicated rhythms, flutter tonguing and technically challenging jazzy-style passages. Highly recommended and well received by audiences there is nothing else available like them, and so these challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable arrangements fill a gap in the market and are an effective and welcome addition to the repertoire, providing some festive music with a rather different flavour, away from the usual standard melody with accompaniment. The collection of 10 Christmas Carols was written for the flute and piano duo 'Tranquillo', who recorded them as their debut album 'Tranquillo Christmas' in 2010, a CD that has attracted some excellent reviews and can be purchased for £10 (plus P&P) from www.tranquilloduo.com Review: "Rebecca has taken both the British and the American version of 'Away in a Manger' and cleverly blended them into one beautiful arrangement of this traditional carol. The solo piano interludes bring out the American melody, whereas the British theme is given to the flute. It is a pleasure to play an arrangement where both instruments are of equal importance. Whilst the laid back melodies and jazz harmonies make for easy listening, there are plenty of challenges for both players and it is a refreshing change to the many easy arrangements available. We would highly recommend this carol as part of your Christmas repertoire!" - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo, November 2012 Review: "Rebecca's arrangement of 'Away in a Manger' has a calm and gentle feel to it, and as the tempo suggests, 'relaxed'. The piano opens with an introduction before the flute takes a verse of the carol soaring into the high octave. The music then goes into an effective variation with some decoration of the tune and a number of running semi-quaver passages in the flute part across the middle and high octave of the flute, then returning to a coda-like recapitulation of the melody. The accompaniment is fairly straight-forward and more so than her other carol arrangements, perhaps making it more accessible for a grade 6ish student to perform at a school Christmas concert. Very different flavour and great addition to the flute Christmas repertoire, and one I look forward to including in a Christmas recital." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

This arrangement by Rebecca Faith is not what is usually expected when labelled with the familiar title Silent Night. This piece of music is more of a variation of themes, the familiar melodies remaining recognisable but treated as small pockets of atmospheric motifs rather than one long lyrical melody. The style and harmonies have a more experimental magical feel whilst remaining easy on the ear, and are created to capture the attention and imagination of the listener. Rather than a straight play through of the melody, key rhythmic and melodic elements are used, being shared between both instruments. It is an unusual, haunting arrangement that will test a performer's sense of interpretation and musicality, and is a good piece for securing ensemble skills. A definite 'must-have' for the more advanced flute and piano duo." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo, November 2012 Review: "This beautiful carol is one definitely not to miss out when arranging Christmas carols, with its simple but idyllic soaring tune, especially working well on the flute. Rebecca has captured this well, taking the flute into the high octave and providing an obbligato-style part for the flute above the piano tune. The flute only has snippets of the melody, but it is a creative arrangement with a rather different flavour to the original carol. It passes through different keys and time signatures, with the piano part adding a rich harmonic texture and almost jazzy feel with the triplet and off-beat rhythms in places. The flute part is not too demanding, probably around the grade five level, so would suit a school Christmas concert with an accomplished pianist or a college student or professional flautist looking for a festive treat to insert into a Christmas recital. Lovely addition to the flute Christmas repertoire." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

Flute Friction is a series of flute duets in three books aimed at flautists from grade 1 to 8. 15 Flute duets. 10 Flute Trios. In this first book in the series, ten flute trios are also included, which teachers will find particularly profitable when working with small groups, although the main emphasis in this series is on the interaction between two players similar in standard. In many cases each part is given equal importance, so it is the ease with which players can shift from pole position to a more supporting role and back again that poses the principle challenge. Elsewhere, the spoils are slightly less equitably carved up, and again teachers will quickly gauge for themselves which pieces best suit the abilities and personalities of their students. If teachers can get their students to learn both parts in each piece, then in a sense the books immediately double in value! I like to think of these pieces as being useful from a number of viewpoints and would suggest using them in a variety of ways, not exclusively as light relief at the end of lessons. Duets are an excellent way of improving sight-reading, to be sure, as well as building confidence and assertiveness. But at least as importantly they nurture that most underestimated of skills, listening, without which musical accomplishment is doomed to certain failure. If the teacher is limited in pianistic ability, then duets offer a much needed chance for students to play in a small ensemble setting, which is the first stage to being able to 'hold a line' in a wind band or orchestra. Above all perhaps, the sheer joy of being part of a 'winning team' can hardly be overestimated; played well, a duet is greater than the sum of its parts and may well have the potential to please in a concert setting. The business of matching intonation is of course especially important in duets, and similarly, taking breaths in suitable places is critical to the way an audience understands the overall musical texture. Balance, and dynamic involvement generally, can quickly be seen as being critical to how the music springs from the page, while articulation in all its guises is absolutely key to creating a engaging musical effect. Gauging tempo, and particularly changes in tempo, becomes a process of negotiation in duet playing, and a happy outcome will require an awareness of the other player's technical challenges as well as artistic ideas. These are short pieces, not unduly encumbered by structural cleverness, and as such they lend themselves easily to achieving fairly immediate rewards. Come back to them a few months later, and this time expect a little more from the performances. My gratitude, as ever, goes to Gillian Poznansky for road-testing the pieces and ensuring the scores make good musical sense. Mark Tanner, 2012

Flute Quartet - 3 flutes and Alto flute. Eastern Fjords is an atmospheric quartet, this piece conjures up images of frozen landscapes and towering glaciers. Flute 1 and alto flute play melodically in octaves through a lot of this piece, with the harmonies being completed by the inner parts. Both flute 2 and 3 get melodic interest as the piece progresses. Exploring the lower range of the flute (flute 3 uses a few low Bs) and rhythmically less complex than his other works, this is an easier way in to the music of this interesting composer.

Flute Quartet - 3 flutes and Alto Flute. Toppling Leaves is in a modern jazz style. A chorale-like introduction using modern harmonies leads into solo-like sections where flute 1 has a free line over ostinati in the lower three parts, interspersed with short interjections in rhythmic unison. There then follow sections where the top three parts build up to a climactic finish. Wandering through many keys (including Ab major), and using some complex rhythmic patterns, this is a treat for a more advanced quartet.

Flute Ensemble - Piccolo, 4 flutes, Alto flute, Bass flute. Settimeno is a slightly smaller scale flute choir piece by Vincenzo Sorrentino. In his trademark style, multiple ostinati in the lower parts support long flowing tunes in the upper parts, often with modal harmonies. Flute Ensemble - Piccolo, 6 flutes, 2 Alto flutes, Bass flute. Fluten II is a companion piece to Fluten, using the same instrumental line up. A fast, syncopated rhythm drives this piece along, appearing in almost every bar. Around this pedal rhythm, two other themes wind and merge, this time based around a triplet pattern. A couple of big climaxes and then the piece fades away to nothing. Again, this piece is already well established on the concert platform.

Flute Ensemble - Piccolo, 6 flutes, 2 Alto flutes, Bass flute. Fluten is a large scale flute choir piece by Vincenzo Sorrentino. A slow introduction leads into a the main, faster section. With it's ostinati and overlapping entries of the main theme this almost has an oriental feeling in places. Later on, overlapping entries of the main theme in increasingly fast rhythms give an impression of church bells pealing out. Using a wide range of keys but not excessively difficult, players from grade 4 upwards should be able to approach this piece succesfully.

The third movement is slower again, with a florid piccolo solo in the central section accompanied by flowing semiquavers in all parts. Scored for Piccolo, 2 flutes, alto flute and bass flute. This is the first appearance of Benjamin Britten's whole Simple Symphony as a flute choir arrangement. In four movements, Boisterous Bouree, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Sarabande and Frolicsome Finale. Written in an accessible style, with modern twists to the timing and harmonies, this pieces is a fantastic addition to the flute ensemble repertoire. The first movement alternates between a running contrapuntal theme, and a more lyrical/harmonic second subject. Alternating between D minor and D major and reaching a thrilling climax before disappearing into nothing. The second movement is even faster (Presto possible), with neat fingering and tonguing required for the arpeggiated theme. The third movement is slow and seriuos, and is in G minor. A lovely mournful lyrical theme soars over modern sounding chords and harmonies. The finale is again fast (Prestissimo con fuoco), and requires some extremely fast tonguing in all parts (easier ossias are included). A fantastic opportunity for flautists to try something new!

This is a highly unique arrangement by Rebecca Faith. Its features are laid back jazzy chords and syncopated rhythms within a 6/8 structure. There is frequent use of clashing seconds in the harmony, but the familiar melody is prominent and not lost. This piece has five clear sections: a verse of the melody, a piano solo, another verse of the melody, a flute solo, then a final rendition of the melody - but here the flute continues to maintain an experimental feel, combining the verse and solo sections to conclude. It is a lot of fun to perform and makes a great closing piece for any Christmas concert." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012 "This arrangement is marked 'laid back', and the first two verses of the carol are straight-forward and in 6/8 time. However the busy flute part in the second requires some concentration and fast finger work to carry off the written-out improvisatory passages for the intended effect. There are some lush harmonies in the piano, not for the average flute teacher to busk in a concert (speaking for myself!) but an accomplished pianist. Fairly straight-forward to get together with the piano but requiring effective use of dynamics and some careful ensemble work in the more jazzy section. This would be a great addition to a festive recital for the professional flautist, or perhaps an advanced grade 8 plus student looking for a challenging piece to include in their school Christmas concert." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

Deliberately fun and slightly tongue in cheek, this arrangement by Rebecca Faith is challenging but highly enjoyable. The new composed melodies become as much loved as the original tune, seamlessly layered and intertwined. The descending bass line, punchy accents and shifting time signatures give this piece a sense of a 'swing' style. Definitely a piece that requires strong drive and attitude. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. There are technical challenges for both instrumentalists, with much octave movement in the piano part, and flutter tonguing for the flautist. A very exciting piece to perform!" - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012 "The flute dominates this arrangement by taking the tune for the first two verses accompanied by a syncopated off-beat piano part in 6/8 time. This then goes into a jazz waltz-like section with the tune in the piano accompanied by an obbligato flute line mainly in the top octave with grace notes and then a whole verse of the carol using flutter-tonguing, requiring some stamina before ending with a return of the jazz waltz to finish. Some tricky piano passages, and I'd put the flute part at a good grade 7 level due to its technical requirements and rather lively tempo. This would make a good addition to a recital around Christmas time and provide something festive but with a rather different flavour!" - Rachel Smith, November 2012

The alternative harmonies in this arrangement by Rebecca Faith make it a highly emotive interpretation. The piano takes control of the main melody, with the flute adding beautiful harmony and decorative features. The phrases 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and 'Joyful and Triumphant' are explored in shifting keys and harmonies adding a unique richness. However, the melody is still strongly present leaving the listener satisfied that they have heard the much loved tune. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. One of the things I love about Rebecca's music is that it is so full of passion and emotion, and this piece is another example of that. A great arrangement for every flute and piano duo." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012 "This ever-popular carol is a great one to include an arrangement of, even though it may encourage the audience to sing-along! It opens with the tune in the piano part with a lilting but lyrical broken-chord pattern in the left hand, and continues with the tune throughout. The flute joins for the second verse but is always in thirds with the piano and never has the core tune for more than the odd phrase. This may be seen as a shame that it doesn’t even dominate in one verse, but instead it takes on more of an obbligato role accompanying the tune, and using all three octaves of the flute. Although the piano part is one of the more straight-forward and easier of the carol arrangements by Rebecca Faith, it is nevertheless important to carry the tune throughout and would require some practice on the part of the pianist in the more rich chordal sections. Probably around grade 4-5 standard for flute players and suitable for the concert platform, perhaps for a confident student to play in school concert or carol service." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

This beautiful melody arranged by Rebecca Faith is refreshed with nonchalant jazzy harmonies. The main melody is heard but then takes a different turn with a short interlude in an improvisatory style. The main melody is heard in three different keys descending each time, however the opposite effect occurs as the rich sound of the key change lifts the ambience of the music. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. With rich chords and jazz harmonies in the piano part, and long melodic lines on the flute, it is ideal for creating a warm festive atmosphere." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012 "The piano opens with the tune and is lightly harmonised before modulating with the flute entry. Again some effective and unexpected harmonies accompanying a fairly straight forward flute part of around grade 5 level, with some variations on the tune in the middle section giving the piece some contrast and interest. The piano part is simpler than some other of Rebecca's arrangements but still requiring some work and not just a simple 'busk' through! This would be suitable for players giving a recital around Christmas time but looking for some festive bits, either in the programme or as an encore." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

The collection of 10 Christmas Carols was written for the flute and piano duo 'Tranquillo', who recorded them as their debut album 'Tranquillo Christmas' in 2010, a CD that has attracted some excellent reviews and can be purchased for £10 (plus P&P) from www.tranquilloduo.com "Joy to the World is a great opener for any Christmas concert and this lively, sparkling arrangement has always been well received by audiences. With technical challenges in both the flute and piano parts this arrangement will show off the players skill and is an exciting, virtuosic piece for the advanced flute and piano duo." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012 "This begins with the basic tune in the lower flute register, before varying it by taking it up the octave, then using imitation between the flute and piano parts, a number of modulations, and the flute taking over with an obbligato part accompanying the tune in the piano part. The original tune deviates somewhat and the inclusion of some complex rhythms and harmonies give it an interesting flavour, however at times the flute is quite low and may struggle to be heard when the piano has a rich chordal section in octaves. The piece would suit a concert platform, fitting into a December flute and piano recital, providing a festive flavour, however it would require some getting together with the pianist as the piano part is by no means easy." - Rachel Smith, November 2012.

Graded jazz pieces for solo flute, recently set on the new Trinity College syllabus for all 8 grades. The story behind Scatadoodledoo: "One day when I was at home practising my flute for a Jazz gig, I had a particularly hard chart with lots of key changes and I just couldn't get into the flow of it. I was thinking logically and thinking of the chord symbols and just thinking, thinking, thinking which anyone who improvises knows is a sure way to stop you being "in the flow". Being a Jazz singer, I love to scat sing and so I soon found myself putting my flute down and scat singing through the chart instead. I wasn't thinking, I was just scatting around with my "do-be-doos" and I was really getting into it and enjoying myself, feeling so free in comparison to when I was improvising on the flute. That's when I had the idea to sing and play on my flute at the same time... I figured that all I needed to do was practice playing on my flute what I was singing at the same time and I'd be sorted with this hard chart in front of me. I started off simply at first, but the more I practised, the more I found my voice and fingers working together until it literally felt like they were "one" and I was "singing my flute". Then when I took my voice out of it and all that remained was the sound of my flute, that feeling of "singing" still remained and I felt a freedom in my flute improvising that had been missing before. This discovery completely changed my jazz flute playing and to this day it is still my favourite way of practising improvising. "Scatadoodledoo" is to encourage all Jazz flautists to start thinking of their flute as the voice they are scat singing with. The pieces range from grade one through to grade eight. Although the more advanced pieces like "scatastrophy" and "scatterbrain" have sections where the flautist has a chance to actually play and sing at the same time, it is never too early to practice this method whether it be with scales or with beginner pieces like "Scat Walker". I hope you enjoy playing these as much as I enjoyed writing them." Alicia Hart
