One of the most prolific and influential composers of the Baroque era, Vivaldi is especially noted for his compositions for violin, e.g., The Four Seasons. He was equally at home in composing for other instruments, however, including the flute, recorder, and bassoon. This volume comprises a selection of his finest compositions for wind instruments, including six concertos for flute and strings: Concerto No. 1 in F Major, "The Tempest" (RV 433); Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, "Night" (RV 439); Concerto No. 3 in D Major, "The Bullfinch" (RV 428); Concerto No. 4 in G Major (RV 435); Concerto No. 5 in F Major (RV 434); and Concerto No. 6 in G Major (RV 437). Also here are four "related" concertos: Concerto No. 1b, variant (RV 570) for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, and Strings; Concerto No. 2c, variant (RV 501) for Bassoon and Strings; Concerto RV 422 for (Soprano) Recorder in F Minor; and Concerto RV 444 for Sopranino Recorder in C Major. Musicians and music lovers will appreciate this convenient compilation of rewarding works by the Italian master, edited and with an introduction by Italian Baroque music expert Eleanor Selfridge-Field Dover Original.

Some of the most beautiful music from Mozart's operas is to be found in Così fan Tutte. Now flautists can extend their repertoire and explore these glorious moments. These duet arrangements from the late 18th and early 19th centuries of Mozart's operatic highlights have served as a basis for modern-day editors. Whilst retaining many aspects of the original flute arrangements, Mozart's own intentions with regard to the relevant orchestral settings have been considered and respected. Suitable for intermediate-level flautists, these duets may well introduce players to the music of Mozart. Flute Choir/Ensemble - 4 Flutes, alto flute, bass flute, optional contr'alto flute, contra-bass flute Three choruses from Handel's Messiah (Let us break their bonds asunder, For unto us a child is born and His yoke is easy) arranged for large flute choir. The contrapuntal nature of these pieces takes them out of the realm of a simple sightreading exercise and makes them really meaty pieces that need careful practice and rehearsal. All parts (even the lowest flutes) take part in the counterpoint, and flutes one and two need agile fingers and nimble tongues to negotiate the extended semiquaver passages. Something different for the Christmas concert!

Master flautist Amy Porter has reworked the famous etudes of Cyrille Rose for Flute, allowing students of the instrument to reap the rewards of pieces that have benefited clarinettists for generations. As these etudes were written for the range of the Clarinet and based on the range of Ferling's Oboe etudes, Porter has raised the octave placement in some exercises to make them more suited for all the octaves of the modern Flute. This edition also includes a data CD containing Piano accompaniments written and performed by John Walker in both MP3 and printable PDF format. In this form, the Rose etudes will become as essential to Flute students as they are to clarinettists, as both practice and recital pieces.

Sonata per Flauto traverso e Basso continuo by Wilhelmine von Bayreuth (1709-1758). Edited by Adelheid Krause-Pichler and Irene Hegen. For flute and piano. Flute. Instrumental Music. Easy to medium. Score and parts. Composed about 1730. Duration 10'. Published by Furore Verlag (FV.FUE-4680). ISBN M-50012-968-4. Instrumental Music. The flute sonata, which was only recently discovered and is printed here for the first time, is the second autograph manuscript of Wilhelmine von Bayreuth known at present. The A flat sonata was originally written for the then common transverse flute, and yet it can also be played today with the modern Boehm-flute. The instrumentation of the bass part is not specified: for harpsichord alone, or harpsichord with violoncello to intensify the bass. The presto of the sonata shows, that Wilhelmine preferred "wild thundering flute playing" over an affected performance.

Tune in a Popular London Style by Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961). Arranged by Barry Kopetz. For Concert Band (Piccolo, 1st & 2nd Flute, 1st & 2nd Oboe, English Horn, 1st & 2nd Bassoon, 1st Clarinet in Bb, 2nd Clarinet in Bb, 3rd Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Soprano Saxophone, 1st & 2nd Alto Saxophone in Eb, Tenor Saxophone in Bb, Baritone Saxophone in Eb,). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 3:15. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10891). Tune in a Popular London Style was "An attempt to write an air with a 'Music Hall' flavor embodying the London blend of gaiety with wistfulness so familiar in the performances of George Grossmith, Jr., and other vaudeville artists. It consists of two strains, like the solo and chorus of music-hall ditties. The musical material, composed in London, dates from about 1912, and was worked out and scored during the winter of 1915/16 in New York City and in railway trains.(Notes derived form "A Source Guide to the Music of Percy Grainger," ed. by Thomas P. Lewis.)While residing in London in 1915, Grainger and his mother made a quick decision to leave London. The Great War had just begun, and Rose Grainger worried about her son's career prospects if they remained in London. They boarded the Cunrad ship Laconia in Liverpool and reached Boston on September 8, 1915. Grainger merged into the musical life of New York City and began performing at the piano, earning him a wide reputation. Sixteen concerts were booked for New York with the leading orchestras, as well as numerous solo recitals. Other performances were scheduled in Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Boston and the Chicago orchestras. In the first season in America, Grainger's works received approximately one hundred performances, though Grainger was only invited to conduct but once. Although the success he was receiving as a pianist was unlike anything he received in Europe, he saw that his success as a performer was in danger of denying him any critical acclaim as a serious composer. As his career began to flourish, the need for increased travel became a necessity. Whenever Grainger traveled, he took the train. He loved railways, as they gave him the space to spread his manuscripts out and compose. He always traveled second class, and rarely took a sleeper, preferring to sleep sitting up. He would occasionally depart the train one station early and give the difference in fare to a local charity. It was partly during these trips on the train that Grainger scored In a Nutshell. In June of 1916, Grainger was invited to take part in the Norfolk, Connecticut Festival of Music. It was for this performance that he scored and put together an orchestral suite which he entitled In a Nutshell. Some of the sketches for the piece went back to 1905, and the suite was eventually published in four movements, the final movement being the well-known "Gum-Suckers March" (originally entitled 'Cornstalks March'). Despite the mood of jollity of the suite, it is serious in intent and contains some of Grainger's most characteristic scoring. The first performance was conducted by Dr. Arthur Mees and Grainger was paid $500 for producing it.(Notes derived from "Percy Grainger" by John Bird).

Derek Bourgeois is one of Britain's leading composers for brass and military bands and for solo wind instruments. Early in his career he showed a strong interest in the trombone and wrote a triple concerto for three trombones and orchestra. The idea was that the entire trombone section of an orchestra could come forward and display their abilities as a group and individually. While the premiere audience was strongly enthusiastic about the piece, it was rarely played after that. In 1988 Bourgeois returned to the trombone as a concerto instrument for the occasion of the first international trombone symposium in London, which was held in 1988. It is a substantial twenty-minute piece in three movements, "Allegro," "Adagio," and "Presto." Because trombonist from the worlds of pop and jazz would attend the symposium as well as classical artists, Bourgeois decided to make his new concerto musically ecumenical, and it was deliberately tailored to have an appeal wider than the usual classical audience. The third movement, in particular, was a great hit. The concerto was written for the Swedish player Christian Lindberg, who premiered it.

Northern Lament by Derek Bourgeois (1941-). Band Music. Grade 4.5. Score only. Duration 4:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11214). This piece originated in the slow movement of "Sonata for Brass Quintet," which I wrote in 1965 whilst still a pupil of Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music, London. It had been commissioned by the Halle Brass Quintet, although they never performed the work. In 1997, Timothy Reynish suggested that I should arrange the work for wind orchestra. I decided to expand the movement into something more than double its original length, adding a fiery climax to its central section. The whole movement derives from the simple melody stated at the beginning. Because of Timothy Reynish's association with the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England and because the original sonata was never played by the northern-based Halle Brass Quintet who invited me to write it, I decided to call the new piece "Northern Lament.".

The work has now been released in a number of different orchestrations of the original version for organ.

Prelude for an Occasion by Edward Gregson. Arranged by Geoffrey Brand. Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 4:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11053). "Prelude for an Occasion" might be described as a "curtain raiser." Its purpose is to set a mood which this Prelude does by bursting into a fanfare, always a good way to arrest attention. A quicker tempo Allegro moderato follows, comprising a short bouncing figure answered by a solid response from the lower instruments and introducing a lively solo on the clarinet, marked Giocoso (playfully, merrily). The interval of a falling 5th is important, echoes by a similar response from other instruments, which then gives way to a broad melody, played canabile (in a singing style).Rhythmic bi-play, trombone glissandi and a light-hearted obbligato, all add to the merriment. The opening fanfare returns in extended form, and a final flourish brings the Prelude to a triumphant ending.

The work is in three movements, and uses material based on the 13th century plainsong 'Dies Irae". the opening Intrada is sombre. the second movement is a 'chorale and variations. the chorale melody follows the main outline of the plainsong. the five variations are varied in mood and intensity. the final March is much happier in mood and has a lyrical tune in the middle first heard on horns. However, references to the 'Dies Irae' are still apparent and the final bars of the work contain a quote from the opening movement.

Symphony AD 78 by Gordon Jacob (1895-1986). For Concert Band (Piccolo, 1st Flute, 2nd Flute, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Eb Clarinet, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, 3rd Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Eb Alto Saxophone 1/2, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone, 1st Bb Cornet, 2nd/3rd Bb Cornet, 1). Band Music. Grade 5. Score only. Duration 15:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11158). With this Symphony, Gordon Jacob proclaims his absolute mastery of idiom and instrumentation with a triumphant rejoicing. Written in 1978 as a commission from Arthur Doyle (hence the "AD" in the title, a typical piece of Jacob wit), it lay virtually unplayed save for the efforts of his Estate, Troy Peterson and Geoffrey Brand and CBDNA (College Band Directors Association, USA), who between them ensured that it was professionally recorded in 1994 and published in 1995.There is little point in indulging in semantics as to whether the piece is a Symphony. It is Jacob's approach to his tuneful, folk-based material which is symphonic: weighty in exposition and development, sonorous and expressive in the slow movement, with a scherzo-like last movement and a giocoso coda. After a brilliant opening fanfare, the quick triple-meter first theme (Allegro Risoluto) is introduced on clarinets, punctuated with brass. It is soon followed by a contrasting melody for saxophone. In all this material the interval of a 4th is prominent, and throughout the work the 4th and 7th are important. Perhaps it is the frequent use of the 7th which gives a feeling of restlessness without resolution which pervades this movement as the themes are dissected and developed. The second movement follows directly after a horn bridge. Still the melody outlines the 7th and the ear is not satisfied until the full band (with organ), comes to rest in Bb major. This point of repose and the magic pianissimo which follows shortly after when the slow theme is re-stated, are the apex of the Symphony's construction.Soon, however, we are transported, via a fanfare, into a helter-skelter 9/8 romp: rustic, English, and almost vulgar, this theme is thrown around the group before exploding into a boisterous 2/4 coda.

Col. Rodney Bashford and was published to celebrate the centenary of the composer's birth.

A Downland Suite by John Ireland (1879-1962). For Concert Band (Piccolo, 1st Flute, 2nd Flute, 1st Oboe, 2nd Oboe*, Eb Clarinet*, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, 3rd Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet*, Bb Bass Clarinet, 1st Bassoon, 2nd Bassoon*, 1st Eb Alto Saxophone, 2nd Eb Alto Saxophone, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Barit). Band Music. Grade 5. Band score. Duration 16:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11006). "A Downland Suite" is one of a pair of works Ireland wrote for brass band (the other being "Comedy Overture") in the 1930s. Both were commissioned by the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, and this piece was completed in 1932. Ray Steadman-Allen's skillful arrangement was published in 1985.Interestingly, the composer himself "freely adapted" the Elegy and Minuet for String Orchestra and the adaptation of the outer movements for strings was undertaken some years later by Geoffrey Bush, one of Ireland's many eminent composer pupils."A Downland Suite" is structured classically, revealing itself in the loose "sonata form" of the Prelude, the song-like Elegy, the Minuet with formal repeats and full Trio, and a last movement which utilizes the Rondo framework of a recurring theme reappearing in different keys. But within this classical form are unsettling elements. The tonal relationships between movements of the suite becomes more remote as the work progresses. The first movement is in C Minor, the second in Eb Major, the third in Bb Major (with a Trio in Bb Minor) and the last opens in G Minor and ends with blazing fanfares in G Major, a long way from the sombre mood of the opening. The phrase structure of the Minuet is sometimes unexpected: an 8-bar phrase opens, but Ireland mirrors it with a 9-bar phrase! In fact, throughout the work, the music reaches over bar-lines, phrases are extended, and strong beats displaced.Tight thematic unity between movements gives the work its cohesion. The Elegy melody provides the kernel and the rising fourth interval is seminal. Ireland gives us our clue by repeating the Elegy theme in the last movement. In fact, the opening Rondo theme is virtually the Elegy (but played four times as fast) and the Minuet is the Elegy theme in inversion. The interval of the fourth (sometimes manifested as a falling fifth) is emphasized throughout the first movement. Add to this the octave leaps, the pillars around which the Prelude is constructed, which find their way into the Rondo as the opening accompaniment, and the mature composer's high art of achieving unity within diversity of structure and style is revealed.
