Missa Pro Pace by Daniele Carnevali. For concert band with SATB or Unison choir ad lib. (with keyboard accompaniment). Sacred Music. Grade 2.5. Score and full set of parts. Duration 14 minutes, 10 seconds. Published by Scomegna Edizioni Musical srl (S4.ESB697). The Latin Mass has always been a source of inspiration for numerous composers, many of whom produced works of immense musical and spiritual value, such as the Polyphonic Masses by Palestrina and a number of his contemporaries. Other, more recent examples include works by Bach and Mozart, Beethoven and Verdi: absolute masterpieces in the history of music. MISSA PRO PACE, composed in 1986, is unique in that it was written for choir and band. We must go back at least one century to find records of anything similar in Italy. The choral part, in both the quartet and choir versions, is austere and dignified. Characterised by the absence of virtuosities, a sense of communion and spirituality pervades the entire work. The general choir conveys the wealth of traditional choral expressions. Likewise, the band either provides a light accompaniment for the choral melody or enhances its solemnity. The Mass can be performed as a whole (the 5 parts in sequence) or as separate parts, to accompany the liturgy. The work can also be performed without the choir.

Windependence - Artist Level (Level 5) The title pertains directly and literally to the longevity of the St. Olaf Band. It also suggests much more in that a milestone of over one hundred years demands some thinking, some ruminating and some reflection on how an organization is able to continue to excel over such an expanse of time.

Choral No. 2 for Organ by Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961). Arranged by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Band Music. Grade 5. Score and parts. Duration 11:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.R10039). At the age of 15, Cesar Franck (1822-1890) traveled from his native Belgium to study organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He remained in Paris for the rest of his life, working as a church organist and teaching piano and organ. In 1872, at the age of 50, he was named professor of organ at the Conservatoire. The same year he composed his popular Panis Angelicus, and as a result became more widely known as a composer. During the last eleven years of his life he wrote most of his compositions including the Symphonic Variations, the Violin Sonata, and the Symphony in D Minor. At a time when French music was often light in character, his was serious and profound.Franck's final and culminating achievement was the Three Chorals for Organ. The completed manuscript was at his fingertips as the priest arrived to administer last rites. The Three Chorals are organized in variation form. They are not as brief as the church chorals of Bach, but rather, extended symphonic compositions. Albert Schweitzer has commented that "the chorale in modern French organ literature means simply a fantasy on a formal, noble theme." The Organ Choral No. 2 fits Schweitzer's description. The music contains references to the D Minor Symphony, Heroic Piece for Organ, and the Violin Sonata, as well as settings of the Christ motive of Franck's The Beatitudes (bar 115 and bar 274).The 2nd Choral opens with a chaconne-style bass theme. The melody passes successively through bass and treble voices leading to a lyrical second subject (bar 65). This new theme develops through a series of interspersed interludes arriving at a grand, virtuosic cadenza (bar 127). The chaconne variations resume, continuing to unfold until the first and second themes are combined (bar 195). More intense and complex variants lead to a powerful final statement of the opening theme (bar 259). The music concludes with a tender and poignant coda based on the "Christ motive."Grainger's setting of the Choral No. 2 was first performed by the Interlochen Band on July 12, 1942. Grainger conducted. It is interesting to note that five years earlier at Interlochen, Grainger had conducted the 1st Franck Organ Choral in a band arrangement by his friend Ralph Leopold. Leopold's arrangement may have been an impetus for Grainger's setting of the 2nd Choral.Quite another factor may have been the composer's apprehension over the onset of World War II. In 1940, Percy and Ella Grainger moved away from their home in White Plains to escape the supposed vulnerability of the New York City area. They chose Springfield, Missouri, presumed safe from enemy air and naval attacks. It is not hard to imaging that he wanted his students to share Franck's healing message of love, hope, reaffirmation, and peace. The Interlochen program cover for the premier features Grainger's picture with the following inscription:a man of genius, force and achievement, renowned and honored throughout the world-who comes to us for the entire seasonwith the sweet simplicity of a true gentleman andthe rare patience of the exceptional teacher, with a gigantic intellect projected far beyond our petty problemsbut with a wide and sympathetic understandingfor the lowliest among us.His visit is a privilege we humble hope to merit.

North-German organ music from the classical and romantical time by Various. Edited by Konrad Kuster. This edition: Paperbound. Organ music based on hymns, Free organ music. Collection. 208 pages. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.1802600). ISBN M-007-09328-0. Organ music based on hymns, Free organ music. For the first time a completely self-contained organ repertoire is presented which originated in the churches of northern Germany after 1780 - and yet which was concerned specifically with the north German traditions of the 17th century. At the center of this tradition was Arp Schnitger (1648-1719), a figure symbolic of north German organ building: his organs have long been regarded as ideal for the playing the music of Bach and Buxtehude; but whoever played these organs in around 1800 could be purposefully inspired to compose. The result sounded differently than one is accustomed to from Schnitger organs; inspite of this, the music is linked inseparably to them - here the long term effect of Schnitger can be grasped. Thus, in three volumes a many-facetted, 'more recent' organ music from northwestern middle Europe is now accessible. A fascinating element is the rich chromaticism which was concerned more with unusual color effects than with purposeful modulation and in this respect maintained the old harmonic tensions and their unexpected resolutions ('durezze e ligature'). This led to a stunning enrichment of the repertoire: post-baroque, north-German organ music. Since the early 20th century many north-German organs have been influenced by the north-German sound ideal, this music is generally useful: in clear levels of difficulty, practical for liturgical or concert use.
