12 petites pieces (Second set) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Edited by Christopher Hogwood. For Keyboard. Playing score. 25 pages. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH180-SOL). ISBN 978-1-905779-10-9. All the pieces were arranged with a clear eye to the amateur market with no great technical demands or wide stretches, and where Mozart had left few dynamic markings, the arranger carefully marked suitable and stylish expressive effects. This repertoire would be effective today on the modern piano, the fortepiano or the clavichord.

ISBN 978-1-905779-01-7. All the contents of the genuine collections have been identified in Mozart's output with the exception of two pieces included in these XII petites pieces, issued as pour le Clavecin by Artaria and pour le PianoForte by various Leipzig publishers. This collection is presented here in the sequence adopted by Artaria, which brings both mystery pieces to the beginning of the sequence.

Sonata in C minor by Anton Eberl (1765-1807). Edited by Christopher Hogwood. For keyboard. Playing score. 37 pages. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH175-SOL). ISBN 1-904229-96-4. Anton Eberl, nine years younger than Mozart, also began life as a prodigy, and became a friend of Mozart and probably also a pupil; his compositions show such an acquaintance with Mozart's style that misattributions were inevitable. This dramatic sonata was first published by Artaria as Mozart's Op. 31 in 1794, but reissued with revisions, as Eberl's Op. 1 four years later.

Sonata in Bb major by August Muller. Edited by Christopher Hogwood. For Keyboard. Playing score. 32 pages. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH170-SOL). ISBN 1-904229-81-6. The Anhang of Kochel's catalogue is full of pieces that for more than a century after his death were thought to be his work; the Muller sonata, a very effective piece on both fortepiano and clavichord, is still suspected of containing some elements of original Mozart in it, and deserves to be rescued from oblivion in this Mozart anniversary year.

Sonata 'La Montanari' by Giuseppe Valentini. Edited by Michael Talbot. For Violin and basso continuo (keyboard). Keyboard score and parts. 39 pages. Duration 9 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH111-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-54-9. La Montanari has a five-movement plan with a 'double' finale: a finale of normal length is followed by a miniature second finale, like coffee following a dessert. The model for this arrangement may have been the Giga-Gavotta sequence that occurs quite often in chamber sonatas. In the preface of his Idee per camera Valentini tells performers that if they find a work too difficult or too long they may reduce the number of fast movement to two. This is probably the first-ever critical edition of a Valentini violin sonata to be placed in public circulation.

This critical edition sheds light on the special qualities linking RV 198 (here published for the first time) to the musicians of the Saxon court, and offers the first detailed comparison between two versions of the concerto. Passages of brilliant figuration and finely-spun diminutions characterize the solo episodes in the fast movements. An alternative Adagio is included in each of the various formats (scores, keyboard reduction and parts).

Concerto in E major (RV 762) by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741). Arranged by Per Hartmann. For Violin solo, keyboard. Keyboard reduction. 24 pages. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH050-KBD). The present concerto, RV 762, is here published for the first time in its original key and in an edition based on an authoritative source. It is one of numerous concertos by Vivaldi known to have been played by Anna Maria, the most celebrated of the many remarkable performers produced by the Ospedale della Pieta, the Venetian charitable institution with which the composer was associated for much of his career. And yet it is, besides RV 286 in F major, the only violin concerto of his for which a source inscribed with the name of the virtuosa has survived complete.

Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH010-KBD). Written by Tartini as a young man, this concerto offers the soloist rewarding opportunities to dazzle. Soli, Choir and Instruments (Piano, Organ, Orchestra). Sound Research of Women Composers: Music of the Romantic (R3). Arrangement of Fanny Hensels beautiful "Faust" for orchestra instead of the original piano. Choral. Intermediate. Full score. Duration 12'. Published by Furore Verlag (FV.FUE-7580). ISBN M-50012-758-1. Choral. "... this score is one of the many acts of mine that will forever remain undone". Fanny Hensel wrote this to the singer Franz Hauser in a letter dated 24 November 1843. Her comment refers to the orchestration of her Faust scene, composed only with piano accompaniment. Fanny Hensel knows that this work should no doubt be set for an orchestra. However, she has reservations regarding with respect to the way the piece could be performed: "even if it were a masterpiece, I would still forever have to perform it as my own piano score." That the piece cries out for orchestration, is also clear to those who look at the original score from a later perspective. The demand for instrumental colours in its atmosphere is too great, everything points too clearly to a large-scale ensemble, the prospect of being able to further develop the motives and thematic structures and references is too promising.

Choral, Romantic. This portrayal of Job's suffering as a test of his belief in God is dramatically and expressively. Its symmetrical form (Chorus, Alto-Recitative, Trio, Alto-Recititative, Chorus) can be seen as symbolic and the question "Was ist der Mensch?" (What is human being?), which is expressed in several melodic-harmonic variations in the opening chorus, seems to symbolically represent the search for the answer. The recitative and arioso call for four solo voices but a choral performance of these sections is also possible. Scoring: strings, 2.2.2.2.-2.2.0.0, Timpani.

Published by Peacock Press (MM.PD00012). Ridout is blessed with a profound knowledge of music ranging from medieval polyphony to 12-tone serialism. Part of the Dolmetsch Recorder Archive. Excellent background and performance notes. About Carl Dolmetsch 20th Century Recorder Archive The remarkable musical partnership of Carl Dolmetsch and Joseph Saxby (lasting some 60 years) was the catalyst for a significant series of works, seminal in the recorder's twentieth-century repertoire, to which many eminent composers contributed. About ninety works in all resulted, many of them receiving their premieres at the now legendary series of Wigmore Hall recitals given between 1939 and 1989. A number of these works have become well known in their published editions and frequently played. However, others remain in manuscript in the Dolmetsch archives at "Jesses" in Haslemere and hence virtually unknown."The Carl Dolmetsch 20th Century Archive" is the title of this new series of publications intended to make some of these previously unpublished works available to the recorder world. They have been carefully prepared from manuscripts in the Dolmetsch archives, often with the additional knowledge provided by attendance at rehearsals and performances involving Carl Dolmetsch himself. The establishment of a contemporary repertoire was as important in the twentieth-century renaissance of the recorder as was its firm place in the early music revival. It is a repertoire that continues to provide musical enjoyment and challenges to recorder players who it is hoped will welcome these earlier contributions to it.
