A "vision quest" is a period of spiritual seeking among certain Native American peoples. It is a religious custom in which people climb to remote sites to fast, pray and commune with nature. Individuals may pray to each of the four directions, seeking certain benefits from each. This four-movement original work illustrates a prayer by David Dillon, which he used on his own vision quest. The movements use recurring but evolving themes, reflecting each petition of the prayer. A myriad of percussion instruments enhance the mystical quality of the music. The movements are entitled: I. I pray to the West which gives us rest and reflection; II. I pray to the North which gives us patience and purity; III. I pray to the East which gives us energy and emotions; IV. I pray to the South which gives us discipline and direction. Percussion parts include: Shaker (Maraca or Rattle), 2 Small Stones, Ankle Bells, Chime Tree/Mark Tree, Finger Cymbals, Whip Crack (without spring mechanism).

Tintinabulations is a light novelty piece containing the stylistic variations from the familiar holiday song Jingle Bells. The first portion of the piece goes back in time to the early 1800's and adopts the style of Gioacchino Rossini. This it seques to the elegance of waltz music from the days of the Strauss family. Progressing into the twentieth centry, Jingle Bells becomes a jazzy delight featuring a special tuba solo. As the piece comes to a climatic ending, the familiar melody takes on the lively sound of Country-Western music. With bells in the background throughout most of the piece, the definition of tintinabulations comes to mind; the ringing sound of bells.

Although considered to be a small work in Shostakovich's catalog, The Fire of Eternal Glory was one of his best known works in the USSR. A recording of the piece, originally written for the war memorial in Novorossiyek, has been playing continuously at that location since its construction in 1960, possibly making it one of the most frequently played pieces of classical music in existence. James Curnow's arrangement for young band begins with delicate sounds from the bells, and builds to a tremendous climax for full band. Dur: 2:30
