Metroplex Drive by Anders Astrand. Percussion Ensemble. For percussion ensemble (glockenspiel, crotales, bongos, 2 vibraphones, xylophone, 2 marimbas (1 to 5 octaves)). Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-AA-MET).
Composer's notes: Metroplex Drive was commissioned by Janis Potter for the All-Star Mallet Ensemble performance at the 2010 PASIC. "Many of Anders Astrand's works encompass a laid-back groove, cascading accompaniment figures and graceful melodic lines. This piece is no exception. Written for Janis Potter's Marimba All-Star Concert at PASIC 2010, Astrand utilizes a small keyboard ensemble of two vibraphones, xylophone, two marimbas (4.3 and 5.0), and one percussionist on glockenspiel, crotales and bongos. The introduction is very slow with soft, openvoiced chord changes played underneath short solo statements by each player in the ensemble. After each "all-star" has his or her individual time to shine, the entire ensemble is ready to go. The piece begins with a relaxed 6/8 groove in the second marimba part leading to the full ensemble entrance. From this point, the piece remains at a steady tempo with clear four-bar phrases. Even though the vibraphone has the primary melody for a majority of the piece with the xylophone, while a second vibe part and the first marimba part contain counter-melodies and harmonic support, "Metroplex Drive," named after the street where Innovative Percussion is located, is not a vibraphone feature. Each player has an important role with short solo lines that emerge from the texture. Throughout the main body of the piece, the second marimbist continues the primary groove and bass line, while the crotale/glockenspiel doubles the melody and bows long chord tones. There are several transitions in this part where the player will need to make adjustments due to quick changes between the mallets and bows. After four 16-bar sections, the vibraphonist has chord changes for soloing, while the other players, including the bongos, lay down a gentle groove underneath. After a short transition with unison runs in all parts, the primary theme is repeated once, followed by another unison run to the end. Overall, ensemble members will need to wade through the thick texture to discover and bring out the important lines. Additionally, each individual part has technical challenges including large leaps and brisk arpeggios up and down the keyboard. In regards to the manuscript, there are very few dynamic markings, so care should be taken to study the score and add dynamics accordingly to emphasize the primary themes, solo interjections and phrase structures." - Brian Zator Percussive Notes, January 2011.

Bloom by MIchael McIntosh. Percussion Ensemble w/ CD Accompaniment. For Percussion Ensemble with CD Accompaniment (3 marimbas (2 - 4.5 octave, 1 - 5 octave) 2 vibraphones, glockenspiel, large tom/impact drum, 4 concert toms, low bongo, high bongo, low concert snare drum, high concert snare drum, field drum, suspended cymbal, gong, high-medium-low splash cymbals, ride ). Level 4. Score and set of parts with CD. Duration 5 minutes, 18 seconds. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-MM-BLM).
Composer's notes: "Bloom" is for a percussion ensemble for 7 players and is to be performed with the modern soundscape provided. It tells a story of a day in the life of a flower complete with blossoming, bumblebees, and a rain shower into nightfall. Movement1 "Blossom" the piece starts with all players surrounding the two vibraphones-.the opening notes. (with vibe motors on) either bowed or played with soft mallets, should be very random and personal by each player. One by one the performers peel away as if to represent the flower slowly opening. the accelerando represents the petals blooming as the piece modulates in key from Ab to Bb, to B and finally Cm representing music in full bloom. Movement 2 "Bumblebuzz" this movement is all about the membranes. The "bees" are approaching! militaristic in style, this movement is about nature's groove. Please adhere strictly to the dynamics in order to give the piece movement, life and motion. This piece is light-hearted and fun to play as the performers interact with the soundscape. Movement 3 "Raindrop Drink" this movement embodies an earthy downpour providing a quenching drink. The opening descending motive of C, B, G, E and C is woven throughout as the sounds of rain mixed with organic percussion creates an introspective overall texture. The ending chord structure is reverent of the calming rain shower. As the rain fades away, the players return as they began representing our flower slowly closing to the peaceful sounds of nightfall."this percussion septet is scored for two vibes, three marimbas (one 5.0-octave), concert tom-toms, glockenspiel, snare drum, and field drum. There is also a small amount of accessory percussion, but the unique facet to this ensemble is the accompanying cd soundscape. This five-minute, single-movement composition is programmatic in that it "tells a story of a day in the life of a flower complete with blossoming, bumblebees, and a rain shower into nightfall." The overall effect is contemporary sounding with little melodic content. This composition was commissioned for the spring high school percussion ensemble (texas) for its 2009 performance at the midwest band and orchestra convention in chicago. Although there are distinctive ensemble challenges in performing with the cd, this composition and its "programmatic topic" will not appeal to everyone. However, it would be a great secondary selection for the mature high school percussion ensemble." - Jim Lambert percussive notes, march 2011.

Radetsky March by S. Johnson. Arranged by Stuart Johnson. For Concert Band (flute 1/2, oboe, clarinet 1/2, /3, Bb bass clarinet, alto sax 1/2, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet 1/2, F horn 1/2, trombone 1/2, euphonium, tuba, percussion 1 (glockenspiel) percussion 2 (2, players) (snare drum, bass drum, suspended cymbal, triangle)). Band Music. Grade 2. Score and parts. Duration 3:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.R10101).
Radetsky March is probably the most famous piece by Johann Strauss the elder. His other claim to fame was as the father of three sons, all composers, of whom the middle son (also Johann) was to become world famous for his Waltzes and Polkas. Father Strauss (1805-1849) was a fine Viennese violinist and he composed the 'Radetsky' in the year before he died. It caught on immediately and became famous as a symbol of the might of the Habsburg monarchy.

El Paso Waltz. (for mallet quartet). By Brian Slawson. Mallet Quartet. For glockenspiel, vibraphone, small marimba (4 octave), 4.3 octave marimba (low A). NOTE: If two marimbas aren't available, both marimba parts may be played by sharing one 4.3 octave (low A) marimba (4 players). Easy. Score and parts on CD-ROM. 8 pages. Duration 3'00". Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCE-32).
El Paso Waltz is written for beginning mallet ensembles so that each student in the quartet provides a specific function. The vibraphone carries the melody. One of the marimba players outlines the chords while the other supplies the bass. The glockenspiel, as is the case in a variety of settings, brings color to the arrangement. If performed in a pleasant, light-hearted way, El Paso Waltz should demonstrate a carnival-like quality. This piece helps young players develop tremolo sensitivity, as well as to encourage eye-contact, body language, and musical communication during slower tempos. This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes a CD-Rom containing an audio recording and all individual parts available for printing.
