Barely Breathing by Brett Dietz. Percussion Ensemble. For percussion quartet (2 sets of tom-toms (one low, one high), woodblock, hi-hat, glockenspiel, congas, bongos, tambourine mounted on cymbal stand, splash cymbal, xylophone, bass drum, timbales, cowbell, crash cymbal, vibraphone, ribbon crasher, china cymbal, marimba (4 1/3)). Level 5. Score and set of parts. Composed 2007. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-BD-BAR). "This advanced percussion quartet composition includes keyboard percussion and membranophones. The instrumentation is fairly standard and includes six tom-toms, woodblock, tambourine, congas, bongos, cowbell, timbales, bass drum, glockenspiel, xylophone, vibraphone and a 4.3-octave (low A) marimba. The tempo of 60 bpm is deceiving because the overall groove is felt at 120, but the marking of 60 is required for the many meter changes. The rhythms primarily consist of sixteenth and thirty-second notes with several meter changes and hemiola patterns throughout the work. The final bars include time signatures such as 27/64 and 33/64, which gives an indication as to the difficulty of the work. The two sections can be divided by instrumentation and set up in two different box formations with the membranes separate from the keyboards. The drums are never utilized with the keyboard instruments, and ample time is allowed in the piece to travel from formation to formation. This non-conducted work is constant and fast-paced. The keyboard sections are very atonal, only require two mallets on each instrument, and will demand significant practice on the part of each performer. This would be a good piece for an advanced quartet looking for a work with intense keyboard and drum parts." - Julia Gaines, Percussive Notes December 2008.

Standup Shadow by Mark Ford. Mixed Ensemble. For percussion quartet with speaker (2-marimbas, glass wind chimes, 4-suspended cymbals, large gong (tam-tam), toms (8", 12", 14", 16" (2), 18"), 2 woodblocks (low to high), 2 cowbells (low to high), sandpaper blocks, 2-glockenspiels, maraca, xylophone, "A" chime tube, snare drum, vibraphone). Level 4. Score and set of parts. Composed 1997. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-MF-STA). "Standup Shadow" is a contemporary percussion quartet with a backstage narrator (not seen by the audience) and five surprise performers in the audience who each perform one crotale at a climactic portion of this ten-minute composition. Each performer of the basic percussion quartet requires a moderately-large multiple-percussion setup with player 1 functioning primarily with a marimba (4 1/3-octave; four-mallet technique necessary), player 2 performing on xylophone plus accessory percussion, player 3 performing on second marimba (4 1/3-octave) and vibraphone (both with four-mallet technique), and player 4 performing on five timpani plus a large multiple-percussion setup. Of critical importance to the success of "Standup Shadow" is the off-stage narrator (who is amplified with a microphone), who must stylize the mood of an almost "e.e. cummings"-like text (original from Ford as well). A conductor is optional, and the quartet also makes verbal sounds: such as the opening "hissing" sound that is imitated by brush strokes on drumheads. The music is dramatic and must be carefully rehearsed to create an improvisational interplay. This work will contrast the traditional percussion ensemble literature quite nicely, and it reveals a pensive, almost cerebral side of the typically humorous Ford compositional personae (e.g., "Head Talk"). Ford's attention to compositional detail and his involvement of unannounced audience members and an unseen narrator brings a surreal, avant-garde atmosphere to "Standup Shadow." - Jim Lambert Percussive Notes, June 1998.

Have You Heard (arranged for percussion ensemble and rhythm section). By Pat Metheny. Arranged by Olin Johannessen. Percussion Ensemble. For glockenspiel, two sets of basket shakers, two vibraphones, three triangles, Marimba (4-octave), 4.5 or 5 octave marimba (low F or low C), guiro, bass guitar, mark tree, bongos, congas, drumset (8 players). Concert Percussion Ensembles. Medium-Advanced. Score and parts on CD-ROM. 14 pages. Duration 4'00" - 6'00". Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCE-20). Have You Heard is a popular piece by the musical legend, Pat Metheny. In this arrangement Olin Johannessen basically creates a "mallet band" to recapture the exuberance of the original. Mallet players are accompanied by a rhythm section of bass guitar, drumset, and auxiliary percussion. This is an upbeat and crowd-pleasing piece which allows for an extended solo section in the middle. It would be a great closer for any percussion ensemble concert, or a great way to highlight your percussion group during jazz ensemble concerts. This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes all individual parts available for printing on the included CD-Rom.

Scherzo (Mvt. 3 from Symphony No. 4 arranged for percussion ensemble). By Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Eric Rath. Percussion Ensemble. For crotales, chimes, glockenspiel, two vibraphones, five marimbas (two 4 octave, two 4.3 octave, and one 5 octave)*, piano, two timpani (26", 29") *Three marimbas (two 4.3 octave and one 5 octave) can be used in place of five. Also, in the absence of a 5 oct (12 players). Concert Percussion Ensembles. Medium. Score and parts on CD-ROM. 30 pages. Duration 4'30" - 5'30". Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCE-21). Scherzo is an arrangement of the famous "pizzicato movement" from one of Tchaikovsky's most revered masterpieces, Symphony No. 4. Though written for 12 players, at the heart of this arrangement is a marimba quintet. It is punctuated and varied, sounding completely at home in the percussion ensemble. Eric Rath has beautifully maintained the integrity of the original through simplicity. Marimbas mimic the pizzicato strings, the metallic instruments imitate the woodwinds, and the brass family is represented by marimbas using dead strokes. This tasteful and colorful arrangement will bring a refreshing addition of classic literature to any percussion ensemble concert. This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes an MP3 recording and all individual parts available for printing on the included CD-Rom.

Pathetique (from Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 74). By Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Arranged by Alan Miller. Percussion Ensemble. For glockenspiel, xylophone, three vibraphones, one 4.3 octave marimba (low A), two 4.5 octave marimbas (low F), four timpani (five recommended), snare drum, bass drum w/ crash cymbal attachment, tam tam, three suspended cymbals (high, mid, low) (8 players). Concert Percussion Ensembles. Medium-Difficult. Score and parts on CD-ROM. 30 pages. Duration 3:40. Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCE-24). Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 remains one of his most popular compositions, and is commonly known as the Pathetique Sonata. This arrangement for percussion ensemble draws its content from Beethoven's first movement. Arranged for eight players on mostly pitched percussion instruments, Pathetique provides an active and colorfully orchestrated piece to highlight the dexterity of the performers, transforming the original piano work to percussion ensemble with musical ingenuity.

Metroplex Drive by Anders Astrand. Percussion Ensemble. For percussion ensemble (glockenspiel, crotales, bongos, 2 vibraphones, xylophone, 2 marimbas (1 to 5 octaves)). Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-AA-MET). Composer's notes: Metroplex Drive was commissioned by Janis Potter for the All-Star Mallet Ensemble performance at the 2010 PASIC. "Many of Anders Astrand's works encompass a laid-back groove, cascading accompaniment figures and graceful melodic lines. This piece is no exception. Written for Janis Potter's Marimba All-Star Concert at PASIC 2010, Astrand utilizes a small keyboard ensemble of two vibraphones, xylophone, two marimbas (4.3 and 5.0), and one percussionist on glockenspiel, crotales and bongos. The introduction is very slow with soft, openvoiced chord changes played underneath short solo statements by each player in the ensemble. After each "all-star" has his or her individual time to shine, the entire ensemble is ready to go. The piece begins with a relaxed 6/8 groove in the second marimba part leading to the full ensemble entrance. From this point, the piece remains at a steady tempo with clear four-bar phrases. Even though the vibraphone has the primary melody for a majority of the piece with the xylophone, while a second vibe part and the first marimba part contain counter-melodies and harmonic support, "Metroplex Drive," named after the street where Innovative Percussion is located, is not a vibraphone feature. Each player has an important role with short solo lines that emerge from the texture. Throughout the main body of the piece, the second marimbist continues the primary groove and bass line, while the crotale/glockenspiel doubles the melody and bows long chord tones. There are several transitions in this part where the player will need to make adjustments due to quick changes between the mallets and bows. After four 16-bar sections, the vibraphonist has chord changes for soloing, while the other players, including the bongos, lay down a gentle groove underneath. After a short transition with unison runs in all parts, the primary theme is repeated once, followed by another unison run to the end. Overall, ensemble members will need to wade through the thick texture to discover and bring out the important lines. Additionally, each individual part has technical challenges including large leaps and brisk arpeggios up and down the keyboard. In regards to the manuscript, there are very few dynamic markings, so care should be taken to study the score and add dynamics accordingly to emphasize the primary themes, solo interjections and phrase structures." - Brian Zator Percussive Notes, January 2011.

Bloom by MIchael McIntosh. Percussion Ensemble w/ CD Accompaniment. For Percussion Ensemble with CD Accompaniment (3 marimbas (2 - 4.5 octave, 1 - 5 octave) 2 vibraphones, glockenspiel, large tom/impact drum, 4 concert toms, low bongo, high bongo, low concert snare drum, high concert snare drum, field drum, suspended cymbal, gong, high-medium-low splash cymbals, ride ). Level 4. Score and set of parts with CD. Duration 5 minutes, 18 seconds. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-MM-BLM). Composer's notes: "Bloom" is for a percussion ensemble for 7 players and is to be performed with the modern soundscape provided. It tells a story of a day in the life of a flower complete with blossoming, bumblebees, and a rain shower into nightfall. Movement1 "Blossom" the piece starts with all players surrounding the two vibraphones-.the opening notes. (with vibe motors on) either bowed or played with soft mallets, should be very random and personal by each player. One by one the performers peel away as if to represent the flower slowly opening. the accelerando represents the petals blooming as the piece modulates in key from Ab to Bb, to B and finally Cm representing music in full bloom. Movement 2 "Bumblebuzz" this movement is all about the membranes. The "bees" are approaching! militaristic in style, this movement is about nature's groove. Please adhere strictly to the dynamics in order to give the piece movement, life and motion. This piece is light-hearted and fun to play as the performers interact with the soundscape. Movement 3 "Raindrop Drink" this movement embodies an earthy downpour providing a quenching drink. The opening descending motive of C, B, G, E and C is woven throughout as the sounds of rain mixed with organic percussion creates an introspective overall texture. The ending chord structure is reverent of the calming rain shower. As the rain fades away, the players return as they began representing our flower slowly closing to the peaceful sounds of nightfall."this percussion septet is scored for two vibes, three marimbas (one 5.0-octave), concert tom-toms, glockenspiel, snare drum, and field drum. There is also a small amount of accessory percussion, but the unique facet to this ensemble is the accompanying cd soundscape. This five-minute, single-movement composition is programmatic in that it "tells a story of a day in the life of a flower complete with blossoming, bumblebees, and a rain shower into nightfall." The overall effect is contemporary sounding with little melodic content. This composition was commissioned for the spring high school percussion ensemble (texas) for its 2009 performance at the midwest band and orchestra convention in chicago. Although there are distinctive ensemble challenges in performing with the cd, this composition and its "programmatic topic" will not appeal to everyone. However, it would be a great secondary selection for the mature high school percussion ensemble." - Jim Lambert percussive notes, march 2011.
