The “Stabat mater”, composed shortly before Pergolesi’s untimely death at the early age of 26, quickly attracted attention. The work’s importance was soon so great that none other than Johann Sebastian Bach performed a German version of the work based on the 51st Psalm. Numerous copies, prints and arrangements attest to the work’s vast popularity, a popularity that still exists today. For the present edition, the autograph was for the first time compared to a very early Neapolitan score that is presumably based on the parts from the work’s premiere. The findings have influenced the musical text; the details are described in the critical commentary. Revised Barenreiter Urtext choral score for Handel's Dixit Dominus HWV 232.

Handel wrote the famous “Dixit Dominus” with the text of Psalm 109 during his time in Italy in c. 1707. Although he was only 22 years old, the work already demonstrates his wide spectrum of compositional abilities which are later fully realized in his operas and oratorios. Central to this work are the six choral movements, which – with their polyphonic structure – are closely related to German choral music of the 17th century. The first Urtext edition BA 4002 based on the “Halle Handel Edition” was published in 1960. At that time no critical commentary was published so that in cases of doubt, the basis on which editorial decisions were made was not officially recorded. A new complete edition volume (BA 10704/01), due to be published in 2013 will include a detailed foreword providing information on the genesis and the first performance of this work as well as information on the psalm on which this work is based and on performance practice. In addition several facsimiles pages will be included, giving a view into the source material. The critical commentary will provide a detailed insight into all the available sources and how they have been passed down. This newly revised Urtext performing edition offers a thorough revision of this frequently-performed work and meets all the requisites of a scholarly-critical edition. Former readings in the old edition regarding a small number of pitches, but mostly basso continuo figures and the underlying text have now been able to be amended on the basis of the new findings. In the new edition the work appears in nine movements – no longer eight – which reflects the composer's intentions. The new performance material is not compatible with the old one. Setting a popular text paraphrased from the Song of Solomon, Rise up, my love is an uplifting anthem ideal for Easter services, although the text's beautiful springtime imagery would also make a lovely feature in any concert programme. The work contains expressive word painting, with moments of intensity alongside phrases of utter stillness. There are opportunities for soloists, and the flexible scoring allows choirs to decide whether to perform the piece unaccompanied, with organ, or with piano. This anthem will be included on a forthcoming CD by Selwyn College, Cambridge (Regent Records).

The first of two works in OUP's new secular series, Voice Junction, A Cradle Song sets Yeats' beautiful words describing the love of a parent for their child. Switching between major and minor tonalities, A Cradle Song is quiet and understated, with sensitive a cappella scoring that makes the sentiments seem all the more real. This is an impressive and sophisticated debut from Swedish singer and composer Joel Nilson.

This edition of the Salve Regina by Portuguese composer Diogo Dias Melgás (1638-1700) is the first published version of the work, which has previously only been available in a library edition. Suitable for liturgical or concert performance, this setting is in four equally active parts throughout, each of which takes the initial plainsong motif at the opening. The effectiveness of this moving work lies in the skilful manipulation of simple motivic material, through the use of devices such as parallel writing, sequences, repetition, suspensions, and hocket. The vocal score is presented alongside detailed performance and editorial notes, and an optional basso continuo part appears as an appendix. Salve Regina is featured on The Sixteen's CD 'A Goldern Age of Portugese Music', conducted by Harry Christophers (COR16020).

The signature tune for the award-winning Swedish a cappella group Vocado, Håll Mig Kvar/Hold Me Fast is characterized by mixed messages: the lover wants to leave, but can't quite bring himself to walk out the door. The flavour of the music reflects the dilemma, with emotions ranging from muted acceptance in the verses to highly charged indecision in the passionate chorus. This is a spirited arrangement of the popular fourteenth-century carol, Angelus Ad Virginem (Gabriel To Mary Came), for mixed voices, with an optional part for tambourine in the final verse. The familiar melody weaves between the vocal parts, and the piece is characterized by medieval harmonies and a rocking thirds motif. An English singing translation is presented alongside the original Latin, allowing choirs to perform the carol in either language.

This tender Advent carol by Bob Chilcott sets an original text by Charles Bennett that creates a sense of anticipation for the arrival of Jesus. Underpinned by a gently rippling piano part throughout, the piece opens with a simple choral melody that blossoms into expressive harmonies before the music gently fades away.

This reflective setting of an evocative text by Charles Bennett uses pastoral and romantic imagery to depict the beauty of a life free from the desire for worldly possessions. The music draws on the words' dream-like character, with lilting scat rhythms and interweaving vocal lines building to a stirring climax before the piece gradually fades as the idyllic vision is enveloped in sleep. With sacred and secular resonances, Marriage to My Lady Poverty is ideal for performance in both services and concerts.

Originally published in the collection A Merry Little Christmas, this is a joyful arrangement of the traditional Christmas piece, We Wish You A Merry Christmas. With jazz-inspired harmonies, 'fa la la' scat sections, and a lively accompaniment, We wish you a merry Christmas will make a striking finale to any Christmas concert.
