Opera Nova de Balli, 1553 (24 dances) - Score by Bendusi. For SATB/ATTB recorders. Recorder Quartets. Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance. Score. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMIM05). A surprisingly small amount of sixteenth-century Italian dance music has survived in ensemble form. Apart front Giorgio Mainerio's II Primo Libra de Balli of 1578 (subsequently pirated by Phalese, who published it as part of his 1583 collection), Bendusi's Opera Nova de Balli, published by the Venetian printer Antonio Gardane in 1553, is the only surviving printed collection of Italian dance music in ensemble form to appear in Italy. Bendusi's collection differs from most other Italian dance music of this time in that the music contained in it does not seem to consist of arrangements of dance tunes that were obviously part of a popular repertoire. There are many tunes that survive in a sufficiently large number of strongly different settings to show that they were part of a living tradition, for instance La Gamba or Le Forze d'Hercole (both found in Gardane's Intabolatura Nova di Balli da sonare per arpichordi). About Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance These pieces are primarily for 2 or 3 instruments. Playable on recorders, viols - and some on crumhorns. Primarily available with just score - although later editions include parts.
