This is an unusual yet remarkably moving new anthem for Easter. Joel Martinson has taken a contemporary poem by John Thornburg that expresses all the anguish as well as hope of the three women at the tomb. The muted brass quintet creates a mournful sound as the women express their loss and pain. As the women realize that the unthinkable has happened the music builds into an inexorable crescendo of praise and hope and the piece ends on an exuberant "Alleluia." The vocal parts while wide in scope are most satisfying to sing and the instrumental parts are written imaginatively so as to express the poetic text. This will most welcome as a major addition to the literature for Easter morning.

Here is a wonderful concert work for handbells that takes three beloved American tunes ("America", "Steal Away", and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic") and develops their expressive possibilities in an engaging way. Mr. Betteridge captures the flavor of each melody in his triptych for bells. "America" is treated richly and majestically, while the simplicity of "Steal Away" is relected in the use of fewer bells. "The Battle Hymn" is given a stirring and rhythmically varied setting, and the piece ends with the full range of bells, giving a rich sonority. The opening material returns for the last section, and the work ends with loud climatctic Alleluias. Excellent music for larger choirs.

In this vivacious and harmonically interesting 3-7 octave setting, Cynthia Dobrinski makes use of the theme and variations form with optional 3-6 octaves handchimes, flute, and tambourine adding extra color. Contrast abounds with martellatos, martellato lifts, vibratos, echoes, mallets, mallet rolls, brush damps, plucks, shakes, and a swing used in a variety of moods from vivace to a lyrical andante. Though the theme is in a minor key, the lyrical variation is in the parallel major, and after the minor main theme returns, a rousing coda takes the piece back to the major key for a joyful conclusion.
