A Minor Case of the Birthday Blues - Score only by Lauren Bernofsky (1967-). For string orchestra. FJH String Orchestra. Score only. Full set (score and parts) also available: ST6251. Grade 3.5. Score only. Duration 3:15. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc (FJ.ST6251S).
Even the most humbug-y of audience members will have to laugh at this new take on the traditional birthday song. After the melody is presented in a minor key, it works its way through a series of tongue-in-cheek "serious" transitions before arriving at a zany calypso setting (complete with maracas and claves!). Through all its silliness, the piece is actually a great teaching tool for many techniques your students will encounter in symphonic music, such as imitation, chromatics, tremolo, triplets, and more. Don't forget the cake!

Vignettes on "There is no Rose" by Leslie Betteridge. For organ. Advent, Choral, Easter. Medium Difficult/Difficult. Sheet music. Published by Paraclete Press (PL.8910).
This piece is based on several themes from the composer's Christmas anthem There is no Rose.." . The harmonic language and musical style of this piece may remind one of Herbert Howell's compositions, especially his Psalm-Preludes. A range of emotions is expressed through the changing dynamics and sectional nature of this piece. This workwould be very effective if used in connection with the composer's anthem of the same title, as the association of words with certain musical themes would give those themes even more meaning. However, the work by itself would be a very strong addition to the Christmas service or a program of Christmas music." --The Diapason.

Three Days Had Passed - Full Score by Joel Martinson (1960-). For SATB choir, brass quintet, timpani, organ. Choral, Easter. Full Score. Published by Paraclete Press (PL.0212FS).
This is an unusual yet remarkably moving new anthem for Easter. Joel Martinson has taken a contemporary poem by John Thornburg that expresses all the anguish as well as hope of the three women at the tomb. The muted brass quintet creates a mournful sound as the women express their loss and pain. As the women realize that the unthinkable has happened the music builds into an inexorable crescendo of praise and hope and the piece ends on an exuberant "Alleluia." The vocal parts while wide in scope are most satisfying to sing and the instrumental parts are written imaginatively so as to express the poetic text. This will most welcome as a major addition to the literature for Easter morning.

This anthem moves rapidly between 7/8 and 4/4 which gives it an enthusiastic rhythmic drive. The choir parts are quite simple and sometimes doubled by the organ. ... This is lovely music that will be of interest to most types of church choirs.-- review by James McCray in "Diapason".

1. The Call--Whitsuntide/General2. Discipline--Lent/General3. Antiphon--Thanksgiving/GeneralDonald Hunt's close association with the great English composers of the first half of this century is revealed in his "Three George Herbert Motets". While inheriting the lyricism and sensitivity to words that characterize the works of Howells and Vaughan Williams, Hunt has added his own gifts of expressive harmony and rhythmic vitality. His gracious choral writing uses a broad range of expression, and his rich harmonic variety underscores the texts of these well-loved poems. Particularly worthy of note is the use of solo soprano at moments of emotional intensity. These works are appropriate for general use but also as concert pieces.

Fantasy on Three American Tunes by Leslie Betteridge. For 4, 5, 6, or 7 octave handbells. Instrumental, Patriotic. Medium. Handbell score. Published by Paraclete Press (PL.9709).
Here is a wonderful concert work for handbells that takes three beloved American tunes ("America", "Steal Away", and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic") and develops their expressive possibilities in an engaging way. Mr. Betteridge captures the flavor of each melody in his triptych for bells. "America" is treated richly and majestically, while the simplicity of "Steal Away" is relected in the use of fewer bells. "The Battle Hymn" is given a stirring and rhythmically varied setting, and the piece ends with the full range of bells, giving a rich sonority. This "Fantasy" will find its place in the repertoire of bell choirs everywhere.
