A lively Promenade opens with a fanfare statement and is quite regal in nature. The leisurely Waltz opens with flute solo and features rich harmonies and interesting textures throughout. The rousing Galop is characterized by a brisk tempo and whimsical technical passages. A wonderful collection of styles that ends in a rousing surge of musical energy!Dances Americanesque is a collage of three short, fanciful pieces set in various forms of traditional dance. The lively Promenade opens with a fanfarelike statement that goes back and forth between trumpets and low instruments. Woodwinds then join in making the idea complete as the music presses on to an abrupt end. The leisurely Waltz begins with a lovely flute solo that is later joined by bassoon. The carefree melody grows dark by way of mysterious harmonies from muted trumpet and woodwinds. The music then blossoms back into the original mood, ending slowly and quietly. The hard-driving Galop is characterized by a brisk tempo and whimsical technical passages. This exciting quickstep is a rousing surge of musical energy from beginning to end. Promenade is driving and forthcoming in nature, but should not be overplayed. Woodwinds must always play lightly, and percussion, while strong at times, should play tastefully. The Waltz relies on rich, resonant tones in the accompaniment parts to achieve a wonderful harmonic quality. The Galop is most effective when played on the high end of the suggested metronome marking. Like the Promenade, it is forward-driving but must not be overplayed. A light approach will help sustain the brisk tempo and deliver a satisfying performance. About FJH Concert Band Designed for high school groups and upper-level middle school groups.
