Kamarinskaja (Fantasy on two Russian Folk Songs). By Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857). Arranged by Jos van de Braak. For Concert Band. Grade 5. Full score and set of parts. Duration 6:30. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM013-SET).
Glinka (1804-1857) was the founder of the national school of Russian music and as such his compositions are often based on Russian folk music. This is also applicable to 'Kamarinskaja', for which he used a subdued wedding song and a stirring folk dance.

Carmen Fantasy (for Violin). By Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908). Arranged by Gerhart Drijvers. For Violin and Concert Band. Grade 4. Full score and set of parts. Duration 12:30. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM114-SET).
Pablo de Sarasate was not only a great violinplayer but a composer as well and because of that it's quite logic that the violin plays an important role in his work. The Carmen Fantasy, together with Zigeunerweisen, is probably his best known piece. In this composition de Sarasate uses the material of Bizet's Carmen in an excellent way.

Ouverture Carnevalesca by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936). Arranged by Douglas McLain. For Concert Band. Grade 5. Full score and set of parts. Duration 08:30. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM291-SET).
The Ouverture Carnevalesca was performed in Bologna on April 19th of the same year (1913) as part of a ten-city tour. The piece was written shortly before the Sinfonia drammatica (1914) and Ottorino Respighi's first major success, Fontane di Roma (1915-16. ) The Ouverture Carnevalesca was not published before Ottorino Respighi's death in 1936. Perhaps Ottorino Respighi saw the work as the termination of his early period and chose not to publish it. Perhaps the move to Rome and the tour simply pushed the piece aside. The unpublished manuscript, along with other manuscripts and documents, was donated by Ottorino Respighi's widow, Elsa, to the biblioteca della musica of the Conservatorio G. B. Martini in Bologna before her death in 1996.
