You'll learn to combine a backbeat groove with a variety of West African rhythms - including Fanga, Kassa, The Two Before the Pulse, and the Son Clave. You'll also learn the touch technique for adding texture and momentum to your playing. Each of the seven step-by-step lessons on the video starts like a private lesson and ends with Alan's entire class playing the rhythm, so you also get a sense of what it's like to play in a group. Nazareth - Hair of the Dog: Live from London by Ernesto Nazareth. Live/DVD. DVD. MVD #CRDVD178. Published by MVD (HL.321017).
Nazareth is one of the legendary acts to emerge from the 1970s progressive and hard rock scenes – a name recognized and loved all around the world. The band formed in the late 1960s but only began to enjoy success in the mid-1970s, when their Razamanaz album spawned two top ten UK singles “Broken Down Angel” and “Bad Bad Boy.” It was 1975's Hair of the Dog album that broke the band as an international success, selling over a million copies in the U.S. – the single “Love Hurts” was a U.S. top ten hit. The band went on to establish themselves in the vanguard of rock with a series of classic albums throughout the late '70s and early '80s. This DVD captures a full show from the London leg of one of the band's many UK tours from the early 1980s. Nazareth are still actively touring the world and releasing new material – their latest album The Newz was released only last year, lapped up by their ever-loyal fanbase. In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not "get it" on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning... [and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own." This is the teacher/ student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style.

Gaspar Sanz (1640 –1710) is the most famous baroque-period guitarist. His works are tuneful and memorable, with fiery cross-rhythms and cascading scale passages. He published three books of guitar music. The baroque guitar could be viewed as a close relative of the ukulele. Indeed, the two instruments have much in common. The smaller four-course guitar actually had the same tuning as the ukulele, for example, although it was largely double-strung. Sanz enjoyed playing scales in the campanella style, with the notes of a scale set out on different strings, sonically overlapping slightly in the style of little bells. This is a technique the ukulele excels at, and is used to good effect in these arrangements. Sanz’ music for baroque guitar transfers exceptionally well to the uke, as these arrangements demonstrate. It is hoped that this repertoire will bring a refreshing addition to the repertoire of the ukulele, just as the little instrument can bring a freshness to these old but lively pieces.
