20 Spanish Baroque Pieces by Gaspar Sanz. (Arranged for Uke). By Rob MacKillop. For Ukulele (Soprano). Solos. Spanish. Intermediate. Book/CD Set. 40 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.22128BCD). ISBN 9780786683321. Spanish. 8.75" x 11.75" inches. Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710) is the most famous baroque-period guitarist. His works are tuneful and memorable, with fiery cross-rhythms and cascading scale passages. He published three books of guitar music. The baroque guitar could be viewed as a close relative of the ukulele. Indeed, the two instruments have much in common. The smaller four-course guitar actually had the same tuning as the ukulele, for example, although it was largely double-strung. Sanz enjoyed playing scales in the campanella style, with the notes of a scale set out on different strings, sonically overlapping slightly in the style of little bells. This is a technique the ukulele excels at, and is used to good effect in these arrangements. Sanz' music for baroque guitar transfers exceptionally well to the uke, as these arrangements demonstrate. It is hoped that this repertoire will bring a refreshing addition to the repertoire of the ukulele, just as the little instrument can bring a freshness to these old but lively pieces.

Irish Music for Fiddle Made Easy Book/CD Set by Philip John Berthoud. For Fiddle. Solos. Made Easy. Celtic/Irish. Beginning. Book/CD Set. 32 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.21354BCD). ISBN 9780786675685. Celtic/Irish. 8.75x11.75 inches. An exciting collection of 29 traditional tunes from Ireland, arranged for easy fiddle. On the CD, the tunes are played 2 or 3 times, so you can really get into the feel of the tune, when playing along. The Complete Irish Fiddle Player by Peter Cooper. For Fiddle. Solos. Complete. Celtic/Irish. Multiple Levels. Book. 158 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.95406). ISBN 9780786603299. Celtic/Irish. 8.75x11.75 inches. In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not "get it" on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning... [and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own." This is the teacher/ student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style.
