Suites I-IV for Unaccompanied Cello / Performance edition for Trombone by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Cuckson. Arranged by Avitsur. For Unaccompanied Trombone. German Baroque. Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello I-IV by Haim Avistur and Robert Cuckson is intended to serve as a performance edition and is based on recent scholarship. Trombonists may use these beautiful Baroque works to improve their musicianship and technique, as they are quite different from the usual Trombone solo fare. Because they were written for a stringed instrument, the technique is challenging, but the genius of Bach's music more than makes up for this challenge. All four suites are in bass clef and they are of moderate difficulty and higher.

Five Songs Without Words for Tuba/Bass Trombone & Piano by S. Prokofiev. Arranged by Joseph Alvarez. For Tuba/Bass Trombone & Piano. Russian 20th century. Advanced. Solo part and piano score. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC2500). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff's Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire. The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano.

Concertino No. 2 in B-flat for Trombone and Piano by Ferdinand David. Arranged by Jeremy Kemptom. For Trombone and Piano. Romantic German. Advanced. Solo part and piano score. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC2507). Concertino No. 2 in B Flat, Opus 12 for Trombone and Piano by Ferdinand David (1810-1873)The Concertino No. 2 in B Flat was recently discovered while surfing the internet. The version found stated that it was a concertino for viola and piano. However the piano reduction had the solo part written for bassoon. It was followed by a separate solo part for viola. However upon examination this proved to be and orchestral viola part and not a solo part at all. From this one could conclude that there must have been, and perhaps still exists, a score and parts for a full orchestral accompaniment.Although not originally for trombone, this piece lends itself admirably to the lyrical and heroic nature of the trombone. It is challenging but well-suited to the instrument and a quality piece of music. The editor hopes that this piece will find its place as a mainstay in the literature for trombone.Jeremy Niles Kempton, Long Island, NY, March 2012.

15 Moravian Folk Songs for Trombone and Piano by Leos Janacek (1854-1928). Arranged by Ralph Sauer. For Trombone and Piano. 20th Century Czech. Intermediate. Solo part and piano score. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC2535). These are fifteen short, but intense works by Leos Janacek, who wrote so beautifully for the Trombone, but composed no solo music for the it. This music is indeed a great gift to the Trombone solo literature by Mr. Sauer. These pieces can be performed by intermediate to advanced performers and are about 9 minutes total in length.Below are a few notes from the arrangement by Ralph Sauer.Originally for solo piano, the Fifteen Moravian Folksongs are remarkable for their musicality as well as their brevity - the only notated, repeated passage in the entire work is in Number 5. Because Janacek included the text in his piano score (with no indication that it should be sung), and the fact that there are, in many cases, indications that the text is only a first verse, I have included some additional repeats. The mp3 sound sample is from a recital at the 2012 Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Performance by Ralph Sauer, trombone and Natasha Kislenko, piano.
