Habaneras, Maxixies & Tangos:. (The Syncopated Piano Music of Latin America). By Bill Matthiesen. For Keyboard (Piano). Solos. Brazilliance Music Pub.. Latin American. Intermediate. Book. 96 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.99424).
ISBN 9780786676354. Latin American. 8.75x11.75 inches.
This collection showcases the syncopated piano music of Latin American during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It features Latin rhythms, which are really African rhythms brought to the Americas by slaves and applied to the music of the European colonists. These rhythms are varied and complex and so is their history. They've had a widespread and profound influence on the evolution of popular music not only in Latin America, but also in the United States. The most obvious offshoots are the tango in Argentine and Uruguay and most of the other popular dances of South and Central America, as well as ragtime and jazz in the United States. Jelly Roll Morton claimed this "Latin tinge" is the essential element that distinguishes jazz from ragtime. These rhythms are the musical roots of groups like: The Buena Vista Social Club.Includes historic tangos written by Ignacio Cervantes - Cuba, Manuel Saumell - Cuba, Juan Morel Campos - Puerto Rico, Jose Quinton - Puerto Rico, Ernesto Nazareth -Brazil, Tomas Leon - Mexico, Sebastian Yradier - Spain, Eduardo Sanchez du Fuentas - Cuba, Will Tyers - USA, Vincente Greco - Argentina, Anselmo Rosendo (Mendizabal) - Argentina, Angel Villoldo - Argentina, Eduardo Arolas - Argentina, Juan Maglio - Argentina.

In the past two decades tango has experienced a popular resurgence worldwide. Almost universally familiar as a dance form, tango is also a distinctive genre of song or canción that was born in the impoverished outskirts of late 19th-century Buenos Aires. Whether sung in Spanish, or as would happen later, in Italian or Russian. 26 songs illustrate the growth and diversity of tango from its Argentine roots to its dissemination throughout Europe and into the Middle East and beyond. These songs are represented both in print – with melody lines, chord boxes and lyrics in their original language and in English – and through classic recordings by the original artists on the accompanying CD.

International Accordion Favorites Book/CD Set. (Waltzes, Polkas, Tangos, Hornpipes, Two-Steps and More!). By Bruce Bollerud. For Accordion (Keyboard). Solos. All. Intermediate. Book/CD Set. 74 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.99597BCD).

Welcome to the world of international accordion music. This collection contains a sampling of ethnic folk music from Europe and the Americas and forms the foundation of a basic folk accordion repertoire. These songs are from many nations. They are crowd pleasers and they are fun to play. I have played most of these songs in the various bands I have played with over the years. These melodies have stood the test of time, so what are you waiting for? Open the book, get your accordion out and let's play some music! One word about these songs: I generally learn a song and then play it by heart-by memory as opposed to playing it by reading from a sheet of music. I believe this allows for more personal expression and interpretation which can be affected by audience response or the way I feel at the time. You'll notice that on most of the performances on the CD I didn't play repeats. Because of the limited time available on a disc we found we couldn't fit all the tunes if we played them as written. Written by Bruce Bollerud, June 2007.
