Phantom Tangos by Brian Balmages. For orchestra. FJH String Orchestra. Full set (score and parts). Score only also available: ST6168S. Halloween. Grade 4. Score and set of parts. Composed 2008. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc (FJ.ST6168). This serious festival work relies heavily on various elements of the tango, set in a more contemporary framework. While the title mainly refers to the way various tangos come and go (through multiple transitional devices), it also references the opening and closing sections, which include a "phantom sound" through the use of mild dissonance and sudden dynamic changes that seemingly appear out of nowhere. Highly creative and unique! As the title implies, this work relies heavily on various elements of the tango, though set in a more contemporary framework. The title Phantom Tangos refers mainly to the form of the work, which is a series of tangos with various transitions that link them together. However, the opening and closing sections to reference a more literal phantom sound through the use of mild dissonance and sudden dynamic changes that seemingly appear out of nowhere. About FJH String Orchestra More emphasis on bow technique and independence of lines. For the accomplished middle, high school, college, or professional group. Grade 3 and up

Adios Nonino by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992). Arranged by Peter Kleine Schaars. For Fanfare Band. Tango / Arrangements of Modern Light Music. Grade 2. Score. Duration 5 minutes, 16 seconds. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.022666040-S). It was the Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) who was at the origin of the so-called symphonic tango in the forties. Those tangos were performed by large orchestras and thus broke with the tradition of the small 'orquesta tipica' Adius Nonino is a typical example.

Blue Tango by L. Anderson. For Fanfare Band. Arrangements of Modern Light Music / Light Pieces / Tango / Novelties. Light Concert Pieces. Grade 3. Score. Duration 2 minutes, 49 seconds. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.020994040-S). Leroy Anderson was the son of Swedish immigrants. He studied music and foreign languages at the famous Harvard University before starting a brilliant musical career. He was a great church organ player, a fine conductor a great composer and mostly the successful arranger for the famous 'Boston Pops Orchestra' conducted by Arthur Fiedler. He turned into one of the very big champions of the musical 'novelty' with hits such as 'Belle of the Ball', 'Bugler's Holiday', 'Sandpaper Ballet', 'The Syncopated Clock' and 'The Typewriter' (all these items have also been published by Molenaar Edition). In was in 1947/48 that Anderson was obsessed by a tune which was to become his world famous 'Blue Tango'. He choose 'tango azul' as title, but this did not sound very commercial. (Usually Anderson first chose a title and then composed a piece, but in this case he did the opposite). The Decca label released this piece on the second Anderson long playing record in october 1951. Unexpectedly Blue Tango became the big success and made its way into the Top ten. Between January and June 1952 one million records with this tune were sold. It was the very first instrumental piece to reach the top of the hit parade: it was number one for seven weeks and remained fifteen weeks in the top of the charts.
