Prelude and Tango by Drake Mabry. For Orchestra. Instructional, Latin, 21st Century. Intermediate. Score. Published by Drake Mabry Productions (S0.10569). Prelude and Tango for orchestra was commissioned in 2008 by the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Troy Peters, director. It was premiered and performed during the orchestra's summer 2009 tour of Quebec and France. The work begins with a slow and mysterious Prelude which features melodic fragments which will later be heard in their entirety during the tango. These are heard over a quiet undulating background tapestry. The Tango (in the Nuevo Tango style invented by Astor Piazzolla) highlights every family of orchestral instruments in a series of diverse variations which culminate in a roof raising ending. All the instrumental families have their spotlight: woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. Video and audio performances of this piece are available on YouTube and at www.myspace.com/drakemabry. Morango ... almost a tango, full score by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9516). "Program note. Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is about to become a teenager on March 16, 1996. Yikes!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived twelve years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at ""Concert X"" by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The ""Red Sneakers String Quartet"" comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the ""doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it."" The original program note read, "" Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted."" Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, ""Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee."" Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, "" ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee."" Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, ""White Man Sleeps."" Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, ""Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams."" Thomas Oboe Lee Cambridge, Massachusetts December 16, 1995 ". About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play! Raspberry Tango. (for marimba quartet). By Dustin Schulze. For marimba quartet (3 low A marimbas, 1 low F marimba). Medium. Folio and parts on CD-ROM. 8 pages. Duration 2'30". Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCE-63). This piece is neither a real tango, nor does it have anything to do with actual raspberries. But it's tasty and might make you want to dance a little. Written for four marimbas (2-mallets each), Raspberry Tango is a short, light, and entertaining piece which utilizes counterpoint and syncopation to create a colorful fabric of marimba texture. It would work great as an interlude between larger works in percussion concerts, or on its own as a way for mallet players to practice blending within a small ensemble. This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes a CD-Rom containing an audio recording and all individual parts available for printing.

Violintango Concerto by Melani Mestre. For violin and string orchestra. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau (BO.B.3671). The piece, structured in three movements, Allegro - Lento - Allegro, is written, as its name suggests, for a solo violin accompanied by an orchestra -a string orchestra, in this case. Its name aims at relating the composition not only to the instrument for which it was conceived, but also to the genre that marks the aesthetic content of the work: this is the only existing original concert for violin and orchestra of this category to date. The piece was written in February 2009 in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, while I was the conductor of the city's Symphonic Orchestra and we were rehearsing a concert in which we would interpret an instrumental suite from Astor Piazzolla‘s Operatango Maria de Buenos Aires, that had been written some time before. Therefore, the use of the language of tango in the composition of this concert was certainly not fortuitous, but although it seems contradictory, employing it was not an intentional act either. The work itself intends to explore the language of tango by means of all the technical and musical resources offered by the violin, but without letting this become an excuse to just write a tango for violin and orchestra or a tango-style concert. In fact, the piece shows a will to develop and experiment with the several diverse ways in which the language of tango can be presented, with all its dialects and its variants. The language employed in this concert explores all these postulations and develops them, starting from a few rhythmical cells of their own that are juxtaposed and intertwined throughout the three movements, forming an indivisible unit. The accents take a special relevance and become a significant part all the way through the musical discourse, as do the different rhythms that not only shape a particular kind of orchestral accompaniment, but also make up a specific counterpoint to the expressive and melodic needs of the solo violin. Not only does the orchestra accompany its soloist, but in many cases it becomes a soloist in itself. The counterpoint, never used as a compositional tool or as a merely acrobatic display, confers structural meaning to a language that allows a dialog between the couple made up by the soloist and the orchestra, in which they can both speak at the same time without any of the two sides being pushed into the background. The second movement, Lento, the aria structure used is typical from Bach -not so much from Johann Sebastian as from his son, Johann Christian. This structure allows for the juxtaposition in one milonga melody, of a solo violin with a basso continuo by four, whose tempo is marked by the strings. The third movement attempts to explain, gradually and in a linear way, the evolution of the metric of tango, as it moves from a bar of 4/4 (typical of tango) to one of 6/8 (Havanera-like), thus demonstrating the historical origin of tango as deriving from Havaneras, and the various transformations it has undergone. We then reach the coda of the third movement where, after one of the two cadences of the solo part, all the tunes that have been emerging throughout the concert overlap contrapuntally with all the polyrhythms they make up together, expanding and contracting by way of the internal accents of the music itself and producing the feel of being simultaneously listening to a bar of 4/4, a 3/4 and a 6/8.
