Zamboni by Bill Holman. Arranged by Bill Holman. Jazz Ensemble / Jazz Band. The Bill Holman Big Band Series. From the Holman CD "Hommage". Bright Swing / Marvelous Chart. Grade 5. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-942). What a marvelous chart this is! The "engine" which keeps on going is a 4-bar vamp in the rhythm section. It occurs throughout the piece and ties everything together beautifully. Set in a bright swinging tempo, the chart opens with 8 bars of brushes and swings on from there. There is also solo space for tenor saxophone. Holman uses some marvelous brass effects all through the piece. This requires soprano saxophone on the alto 1 and 2 parts. 5-4-4-4 (on demo CD 117) As recorded on the new CD "Hommage.".

You're The Top by Anita O'day. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Buddy Bregman. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2175). Recorded by Anita O'Day in 1955 this super cool chart oozes class and style. It is a vocal feature from top to bottom and the vocal lines are skillfully supported by just a rhythm section and 4 trombones. There are no saxes. Due to the fact that many bands only use 3 trombones, an extra trumpet part has been included that doubles trombone 1. The vocal key is A throughout, and the vocal part is score "as sung" by Anita.Ranges:Trumpet 1: C4 (optional Tpt in lieu of Trom 1)Trombones 1-4: Bb4, Bb4, A4, C#4Vocal key: AVocal Range: E3 - C#5 (13 steps as sung).

Transcribed and adapted from a fine version by the Joe Loss Orchestra, You're the Cream makes for a great quickstep for dancing, or a fine concert piece. You're Driving Me Crazy by Billy May. Arranged by Billy May, Jon Harpin. For big band. Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2413). Here is the quirky Billy May version of You're Driving Me Crazy from 1950, full of wonderfully humourous musical invention. The arrangement seems to be moving along at a nice steady 2-in-the-bar pace, when all of a sudden something completely different crops up, blasts away for a bar or two, and then normality is restored. Whether it be the Saxes bending their notes, the Trumpets coming in with phrases that could be taken from a Looney Tunes cartoon, or dissonant Trombones playing off the beat, this chart is certainly unusual, and NOT for the dancers! If you want a special arrangement for a special occasion, this is it. There are no Sax doubles, and we have rated it as Medium / Advanced as the Brass ranges are quite high. Trumpets 1-4: E6, C#6, C6, C6 Trombones 1-4: C5, A4, G4, G4.
