Central City Sketches - Complete Set Of 6 Movements by The American Jazz Orchestra. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob DuBoff. Arranged by Benny Carter. For big band. 6 movements. Swing/Ballad/Waltz. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8285). In 1987, Benny Carter was invited to give a concert of his music with the American Jazz Orchestra. The concert would be a career retrospective: classic music he wrote in the 1930s and '40s, compositions from the '60s, including themes he'd written for motion pictures, and a suite composed specifically for the concert. This suite, Central City Sketches, and the resulting studio-recorded CD released by Musicmasters, were praised by critics who were thrilled that Carter was still creating beautiful, swinging music at the age of eighty. Jeffrey Sultanof was present at that concert, and can attest that the audience went wild when they heard this new music that often recalled Kansas City and the swing era. The sources for these publications are the original parts, which were heavily marked up with changes and corrections that were made prior to the premiere. In one case (People Time) a score that was engraved by Phil Woods was consulted. Movements 1 and 2 - Central City Blues segue to Hello: The suite opens with Central City Blues which segues into a Basie-styled Hello. Because the blues cannot be played as a separate composition, it is combined with Hello. Central City Blues has been marked as "low-down and dirty" by the editor, and that's exactly how it ought to be played. A piano solo and a change of tempo brings us to Hello, which is Carter's homage to his friend Count Basie. Carter is quite specific about dynamics here, and they should be observed. Movement 3 - People Time: People Time is movement three of the suite (It is often called simply People, perhaps changed to avoid it being confused with the Jule Styne-Bob Merrill standard of the same name.) This gorgeous ballad features a flute solo at the beginning, and then a trumpet solo backed by the ensemble. Like most of Carter's music, it was written for professionals but can be played by many middle-school bands. This is a straight-forward flute and trumpet feature ballad that is played slowly. The opening section features a flute solo accompanied by piano. The pianist should pay close attention to the flute and provide adequate, but not intrusive, support. The flute part was written on reed 1. We have included an alternate reed 1 part (on alto saxophone) and may be used in the event that a flautist is not available. If you wish to use this alternate part this arrangement simply becomes an alto saxophone feature (instead of flute). Movement 4 - Promenade: Promenade was originally titled Take a Walk (the title on the parts). This is played at a comfortable walking tempo. Please note the ensemble dynamics at letter A, but please do not overly exaggerate the crescendo. This should not be an sf. Ensemble balance is also important in the playing of this section of the suite. Movement 5 - Remember: Remember is a beautiful alto saxophone solo. Please note that sectional unisons should sound as if one person is playing the melodic line. Movement 6 - Sky Dance: Sky Dance is an attractive jazz-waltz that should not be played too fast. Once again, flutes and muted trumpets should sound as if they are played by two people so that the ensemble color is clear.

The Blues And The Abstract Truth [Complete Set] by Oliver Nelson. Edited by Rob DuBoff and Jeffrey Sultanof. Arranged by Oliver Nelson. For jazz ensemble (Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Piano, Bass, Drums). Swing, Jazz. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8890). This is the complete set of 6 arrangements from the Oliver Nelson 1961 album The Blues and the Abstract Truth . The titles are: Butch and Butch, Cascades, Hoe-Down, Stolen Moments, Teenie's Blues, and Yearnin'. Each individual arrangement is also available separately. In February of 1961, the sessions that later constituted the album Blues and the Abstract Truth were recorded for a new jazz label distributed by ABC-Paramount, Impulse Records. The sessions were produced by Creed Taylor, who would go on to produce classic recordings on the Verve label, and his own CTI label. Oliver Nelson had a career full of highlights by 1961. Originally from StLouis, Missouri, he had played in the bands of Louis Jordan, Louis Bellson, Erskine Hawkins, Wild Bill Davis and Quincy Jones. He had also been a house arranger at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem in New YorkCity. Nelson had made some albums under his own name as well. But it was this album that became his first masterpiece. An all-star ensemble was assembled: with Nelson were Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, George Barrow, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes. One of the compositions on the album became a standard: Stolen Moments . The album received ecstatic reviews from the jazz press and has rarely been out of print since it's original release. Nelson went from success to success, making big band and small group albums in a variety of settings under his own name and accompanying jazz and pop artists. He composed symphonic music as well, and toured extensively even after he moved to Los Angeles in 1967 and became established in the film and television world. He also gave workshops and seminars. He was only 43 when he died in 1975. Thanks to an agreement with Oliver Nelson, Jr., these six classic compositions are now available, edited using Nelson's original manuscripts. Nelson now joins the legendary names whose music is now available from Jazz Lines Publications. With the lone exception of Teenie's Blues, all are arranged for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Teenie's Blues was originally arranged for only 2 altos, piano, bass, and drums. We have included parts for tenor, baritone, and trumpet.

The Duke's Finest by Duke Ellington (1899-1974). Arranged by Stef Minnebo. For Concert band. Pop Collection. Grade 3. Score and set of parts. Duration 0:07:02. Published by Beriato Music (BT.0201-1-114). Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) was a very successful American pianist, conductor, composer and arranger. His orchestra existed for decades and was able to survive thanks to the enormous hits that he and his collaborators wrote. Many of those songs now belong to the standard repertoire of jazz musicians. Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was arranger and composer with the orchestra from 1939, and also wrote Take the A-Train, which became the bands favourite song from 1941. Many recordings were made of it. Juan Tizol (1900-1984, valve trombone) played with Duke Ellington almost his entire career and composed Latin songs for the orchestra. He is co-composer of Caravan and Perdido. Just like in the original Duke Ellington concerts, the medley begins with Take the A-Train, followed by a number of classics from the repertoire of the legendary orchestra. In some songs there are soloists, notable a solo on kettledrums in C- Jam Blues. This solo can also be improvised. When rehearsing a lot of attention has to be paid to the drum and bass, which together form the rhythm section and drive the orchestra on. The other sections have to be tight and create a coherent swing effect. The swing shouldnt be too stiff, and can vary per song. For example in In a Sentimental Mood, the melody can be played almost straight (classically), while the rhythm section continues swinging.

The Birth Of The Blues by Sammy Davis, Jr.. Arranged by George Rhodes. For big band with orchestra. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-9052). Here is one of Sammy Davis, Jr.'s most famous arrangements. We have used the original George Rhodes manuscript to produce this arrangement - this is not a transcription. Sammy recorded this tune several times - with both small groups and with big band. And, this chart uses his big band recording as the starting point with the addition of an orchestra. The orchestral parts are optional - the arrangement plays fine without them. This complete arrangement is scored for full big band plus 3 flutes (in unision), 3 oboes (in unision), 3 clarinets (in unision), 3 basoon (in unision), 4 horns (not in unison), tuba, 3 violins (not in unison), viola, cello, harp, and tuned percussion. If you have all the players at your disposal, this chart sounds fantastic behind a strong vocalist. Other than coordinating all of the orchestra players needed - if you choose to use them - this is not a technically difficult arrangement. However, trombones 1 & 2 go to C5. There are no doubles. Trombone 3 is written for bass trombone.

The tune Slittin' Sam (The Shaychet Man) was written by baritone saxophonist Al Epstein (shaychet is the Yiddish word for a Kosher butcher). Manny Albam took the tune and crafted a great arrangement that was first recorded on Gibbs's 1956 EmArcy record titled 'Swingin' with the Terry Gibbs Orchestra.' The Dream Band later recorded it in 1959. Unlike most of the Dream Band charts this one has parts for guitar and a 4th trombone. Alternate soloist parts have been included so that this may be played with any featured instrumentalist.
