About Hal Leonard Fake Books A "fake book" contains songs written in a concise format that includes only the melody and chords, letting you interpret the song's performance as you feel is appropriate. This is great for quickly learning songs by yourself or with an ensemble. Each song in a fake book only has a single melody actually written out in notes, which is usually the vocal or lead melody. This melody will have the lyrics written beneath the notes, with each word aligned to its corresponding note. Above the notes of the melody will appear the names of the appropriate chords to play - for example, a "C minor" chord would be written as "Cmin" or Cm", rather than writing out all of the notes in those chords as they appeared in the original version of the song. This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges’ name in the late 1930’s. It’s basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington’s later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.

This chart has been transcribed from the Nelson Riddle arrangement as performed by Frank Sinatra on 'Sinatra's Swingin' Session,' and is very true to the original. A couple of minor adjustments have been made to make it playable by a standard 5444 line up. Backing string lines are scored into the trumpets (muted) and the trombone section has been augmented to 4 voices. Other than this, it's just like the record. The muted trumpet solo fills and the important drum licks and kicks have also been written out. After an 8-measure intro which sets the feel of what is to come, it's a vocal feature throughout, backed by some very cool and swinging writing for the blowers which compliments the vocal phrasing all the way through the chart. This is Riddle at his best. The vocal key is Ab, modulating to A half way through. Don't be put off by seeing the Eb instruments playing in 6 sharps. The notes fall easily under the players' fingers. The brass ranges are very playable (lead trumpet to high D6) though trombone 1 has a couple of high B4s and C5s to cope with. There are no sax doubles. Swing @ 160 b.p.m.
