Down By The Old Mill Stream by Benny Goodman. Arranged by Fletcher Henderson. For big band. Swing. Medium. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1319). Down By The Old Mill Stream was written in 1908 by Tell Taylor, and this song has over the years become a bit of a stock standard for barbershop quartets. Benny Goodman recorded this up-tempo, hard swinging version of the tune in 1939 and it makes for a great dance chart. Trombones and Saxes share the melody honours in the first chorus, the Clarinet takes centre stage for the second, Alto and Trumpet feature in the third and the whole band rips for the shout. In this last chorus all reeds are required to double Clarinet. However, we have printed the AATT parts double-sided, with "no doubling required" alternate parts on the reverse. The Alto 1 and Trumpet 1 solos are written out in full, with chords provided. Another "must have" for the Benny Goodman lovers. Ranges:Trumpets . 1-4: . C#6, C6, A5, E5Trombones . 1-4: . Bb4, G4, F4, D4.

Taking A Chance On Love by Benny Goodman. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Fletcher Henderson. For big band. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2098). Taking a Chance on Love was written in 1940, and despite being a last minute inclusion for the Broadway musical 'Cabin in the Sky' it became the show's most enduring hit. Benny Goodman recorded this version in 1940, featuring the vocal of Helen Forrest. It was re-released in 1943 and charted for 14 weeks including 3 weeks at the number one spot. We have adapted Fletcher Henderson's original Goodman chart up to 8 brass, and have scored the reeds CAATT. There are no sax doubles, the brass ranges are moderate and the short tenor solo and BG's cameo solos are written out as-played. The chart opens in the key of D, modulates to A for the vocal, with the final chorus in Gb. Swing @ 120 bpm. . Avalon by Natalie Cole. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Bill Holman. For big band with vocal. Swing. Advanced. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2232). Written in 1920 by Jolson & DeSylva, this song was a favorite of Nat King Cole, and later featured by Natalie Cole on her 'Unforgettable' album. This is a transcription of her Bill Holman chart. It moves along at a very fast pace, and nimble fingers along with good playing technique are needed for your band to get it right, especially in the middle instrumental chorus. Lead Trumpet is written to high F and lead Trombone to high C. This is a punchy and very powerful arrangement full of interesting tonal color, and makes a rousing feature for any vocalist. It is a tough chart, and we have graded it as advanced. There are no Sax doubles, and the vocal key is C throughout.Ranges:Trumpets 1-4 : F6, D6, C#6, G5 Trombones 1-4 : C5, G4, G4, D4 Vocal Key: C [Female Vocal G3 - D5 (12 steps)].

Adapted from Ella Fitzgerald's Cole Porter Songbook recording, this chart is laid back, relaxed and easy to play. It would make a good "change-of-pace chart" for a concert setting or live gig. The vocal is in Ella's original key of Bb throughout. Please note that the audio is Ella's original, and NOT this chart, although the feel and duration of it is the same.Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: A5, G5, E5, C5Trombones 1-4: G4, Eb4, Eb4, Eb4Vocal Key: BbVocal Range: F3 - C5 (12 steps as sung).
