Taking A Chance On Love by Benny Goodman. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Fletcher Henderson. For big band. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2098). Taking a Chance on Love was written in 1940, and despite being a last minute inclusion for the Broadway musical 'Cabin in the Sky' it became the show's most enduring hit. Benny Goodman recorded this version in 1940, featuring the vocal of Helen Forrest. It was re-released in 1943 and charted for 14 weeks including 3 weeks at the number one spot. We have adapted Fletcher Henderson's original Goodman chart up to 8 brass, and have scored the reeds CAATT. There are no sax doubles, the brass ranges are moderate and the short tenor solo and BG's cameo solos are written out as-played. The chart opens in the key of D, modulates to A for the vocal, with the final chorus in Gb. Swing @ 120 bpm. . Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: Bb5, Ab5, F5, Db5 Trombones 1-4: Ab4, E4, C#4, C4 Vocal Key: A Female Vocal Range: G#3 to C#5 (10 steps).

All The Cats Join In by Peggy Lee. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Frank Devol. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2198). Transcribed from her "Rare Gems & Hidden Treasures" album, this sultry chart shows off Peggy Lee's relaxed, almost drawling vocal style at its best. The arrangement is laid back, cool, very hip for its time and a pleasure to play. The piano, bass and guitar lines are scored as-played, as they cement the feel of the chart. The cameo alto solo is written out too, with chords also provided. This chart is very straightforward, and the brass ranges are quite moderate (with lead trumpet to high C#6 and lead trombone to Bb4). There are no sax doubles and the vocal key is Gm throughout. Style: Swing @ 150 b.p.m.Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: C#6, A5, G5, E5Trombones 1-4: Bb4, Gb4, Eb4, B3Vocal key: GmVocal Range: G3 - A4 (9 steps).

Shoo Shoo Baby by The Andrews Sisters. Edited by Alan Glasscock. Arranged by Vic Schoen. For big band with female vocal trio [SSA]. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2214). Here is another Andrews Sisters classic vocal trio chart, and the only change to the original is to augment the band parts up to a full big band line-up. The chart opens with a lovely rubato vocal solo, scored on the second soprano line, before kicking off into the main body of the chart at a steady swing groove. This arrangement is true to the original, and the vocal trio parts are written 'as sung' by the Andrews Sisters. The brass ranges are very moderate. The vocal key is Db throughout, and altos 1 & 2 double clarinets. 2:50 duration. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: B5, F4, Eb4, Eb4 Trombones 1-4: F4, Eb4, Eb4, Eb4 Vocal Key: Db Female Vocal SSA Trio.

Avalon by Natalie Cole. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Bill Holman. For big band with vocal. Swing. Advanced. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2232). Written in 1920 by Jolson & DeSylva, this song was a favorite of Nat King Cole, and later featured by Natalie Cole on her 'Unforgettable' album. This is a transcription of her Bill Holman chart. It moves along at a very fast pace, and nimble fingers along with good playing technique are needed for your band to get it right, especially in the middle instrumental chorus. Lead Trumpet is written to high F and lead Trombone to high C. This is a punchy and very powerful arrangement full of interesting tonal color, and makes a rousing feature for any vocalist. It is a tough chart, and we have graded it as advanced. There are no Sax doubles, and the vocal key is C throughout.Ranges:Trumpets 1-4 : F6, D6, C#6, G5 Trombones 1-4 : C5, G4, G4, D4 Vocal Key: C [Female Vocal G3 - D5 (12 steps)].

What Is This Thing Called Love by Ella Fitzgerald. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2294). We think that the trombone section in most big bands rarely gets a chance to shine and show off their collective talents, so we have taken Ella Fitzgerald's version of this fine Cole Porter tune and scored the chart for just vocal, trombones and a rhythm section. The chart is in Ella's key of G and the vocal part is written "as sung" by Ella. We also recognize that many bands only use 3 trombones, and as this chart needs 4 brass voices in order to work properly we have included an extra trumpet part in the pack (a double of the trombone 1 part), making the chart playable by just about all bands. As well as featuring the vocalist there is a fine 8 measure Trombone soli, and an 8 measure trombone solo (written on the 2nd part). Style: Swing @ 145 b.p.m.Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: TacetTrombones 1-4: A4, G4, G4, C4Vocal key: GVocal Range: A#3 - C5 (9 steps as sung).

Walkin' My Baby Back Home by Natalie Cole. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Bill Holman. For big band with vocal duet. Swing. Difficult. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2322). Transcribed from Natalie Cole's "Still Unforgettable" album, this chart is a really clever fusion of old and new, as it combines elements of Nat King Cole's original recording along with his daughters' fresher interpretation. The chart is scored for reeds to double Flutes and Clarinets in the intro (F, F, C, C, BC) though we have cued alternate sax lines here, eliminating the need for the doubles. The vocal is scored for a boy / girl duet, as per the record version. We have rated it Medium / Advanced only because the Trumpet lines are high in their range, with lead to top E and 2nd & 3rd to top C#. Aside from this it is a fairly easy chart to play down. The vocal keys are A, modulating to Db and D. Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: E6, C#6, C#6, B5Trombones 1-4: Bb4, F#4, E4, D4Vocal Key: A to Db to DVocal Range: Ab3 - C5, Nat C3 - E4.

All At Once You Love Her by Rodgers & Hammerstein. Arranged by Lennie Niehaus. Jazz Ensemble / Jazz Band. The Stan Kenton Orchestra Library Series. Medium Swing. Grade 4/5. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-736). Lennie Niehaus wrote a series of terrific arrangements for the Stan Kenton Orchestra (this was recorded on the "Stage Door Swings" CD). This chart is a medium-swing version of a great Rodgers & Hammerstein tune. It features solo space for tenor saxophone and a short solo for bass. Ranges are quite "modest" for a Kenton chart, and this could also be played with only 8 brass. 5.5.5.3 (on demo CD 116).

Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-174). Scintillating big band music at its best!! Holman does it again! The Artist's Rightful Place by Oliver Nelson. Arranged by Oliver Nelson. Jazz Ensemble / Jazz Band. Oliver Nelson Big Band Series. Fast Swing. Grade 4-5. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-395). Also known as "Patterns For Orchestra" (as recorded on the Verve jazz masters 48 CD), this is one of Nelson's very interesting charts. It has a very angular, exciting melody in a brisk swing tempo, and lots of solo space for trombone (as recorded by J.J. Johnson). The solo space could be filled by piano or any other instrument as well. The instrumentation has been converted to 5-4-4-4, a standard big band.

Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-388). As recorded on the brilliant CD "Afrique", by the Count Basie Orchestra, and also (in another form) by the Buddy Rich Band on the CD "Swingin' New Big Band." This chart is an up-tempo swing tune which just roars from beginning to end. Solos for piano (a la Basie), trumpet and tenor saxophone. "a flagwaver ... the perfect opening number" ... as the original liner notes stated. 5-4-4-3 (on Demo CD 111).

Yearnin' by Oliver Nelson. Arranged by Oliver Nelson. Jazz Ensemble / Jazz Band. Oliver Nelson Big Band Series. Medium Swing Blues. Grade 2-3. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-394). As recorded on the wonderful LP "Black, Brown and Beautiful", featuring Johnny Hodges, this nifty blues chart has very reasonable brass ranges, no doubles, and Oliver's sort-of "gospel" feel to it. It is a medium-slow blues, playable by most bands and featuring a trumpet solo (and room for anyone else). 5-4-4-4 (on Demo CD 111).

This exciting title track from John Fedchock's latest CD definitely lives up to its name! Recorded for Reservoir Records by John's critically acclaimed New York Big Band, this uptempo modal burner is an energetic flag-waver for proficient groups. Tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and piano are showcased soloists in this festival-appropriate swing excursion. Leave Us Leap by Gene Krupa. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1022). Made popular by the Gene Krupa Orchestra, Leave Us Leap is a full-blooded up-tempo swing chart in which dynamics are everything. The first chorus is taken by the saxes, with punchy brass backing. Solos for trumpet, trombone, tenor and piano follow, with a cameo alto solo introducing a big shout chorus at the end. The drummer is then left to his own devices for a solo spot, which could last from a few seconds to several minutes. Some bands leave the stage at this point and let him get on with it! The shout chorus is repeated to end things off.

At Sundown by Artie Shaw. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1140). This is Artie Shaw's 1939 version of At Sundown, from the time when his first band was arguably its the height. Apart from the Clarinet solo, the chart is not too hard, and swings freely with good solid bounce. The arrangement has been adapted from the original 3 Trumpet 3 trombone line-up, to a regular 4 4 brass section, and the Reeds are scored for Clarinet, 2 Altos and 2 Tenors. We have written out Shaw's Clarinet solo in full, along with the Tenor and Trumpet solos, but have left the Piano solo as an improvisation. All the soloists have the chords on their parts should they wish to do their own thing. This is a fun chart, quite quick but a full four minutes long. There are no Sax doubles. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: D6, C6, Bb5, Eb Trombones 1-4: Bb4, Ab4, Ab4, C4.

Shorty George by Count Basie. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1181). Shorty George was first recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra in 1938, proved to be one of his early big hits, and has become a 'must-have' tune for Basie fans. It is up-tempo swing chart which featured Basie and his three big soloists - Buck Clayton (Trumpet), Lester Young (Tenor) and Dicky Wells (Trombone). We have written out the original solos for you, though your players can improvise on the chords provided too. This arrangement is really punchy and powerful, with some great sectional interplay and big ensemble passages. We have also written in the licks and fills on the drum part. There are no sax doubles. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: C6, Bb5, B5, B5 Trombones 1-4: D5, Ab4, Ab4, Bb3.

B-19 by Harry James. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1204). B-19 is a driving swing number, clearly taking some influences from tunes such as Sing Sing Sing and Bizet Has His Day, and the chart has a raw and angry feel about it, as one might expect from a tune whose name is that of a famous aircraft. Being a Harry James chart there is naturally a big solo spot for Trumpet (HJ's chorus is fully written out on the 2nd Trumpet part), and we have transcribed the Tenor solo too. The original was recorded by HJ with a string section (which you can hear on the audio). However, we have modified the arrangement and written the strings back ino the Saxes, and given a solo spot to 1st Trombone. We feel that this maintains the integrity of the original and makes for a more readily playable chart. We have rated the arrangement as Medium / Advanced mainly due ot the range requirement of your Trumpet soloist. Aside from this the ranges for the other brass are moderate. There are no Sax doubles. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: Bb5, F#6, Bb5, A5 Trombones 1-4: A4, A4, A4, G4.

Ultra by Harry James. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1271). Ultra, written by Harry James is not your ususal 'just another swing chart'. After a punchy opening the baritone takes the first chorus as a solo, backed by alternating trombones and trumpets. The chart kicks into a 4 feel for the tutti bridge, and the solo trumpet chorus follows, backed by reeds and unison screaming trumpets. A big hitting shout chorus wraps the chart up, with a cameo trumpet solo leading to the finish. A fine chart from the later days of the HJ orchestra. Whilst the arrangement is generally not that hard, the trumpet solo and sectional work is quite demanding, hence this chart is at the difficult level. There are no sax doubles. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: F6, E5, B5, F5 Trombones 1-4: Bb4, Ab4, Ab4, C4.

Both the sax and the brass sections get to have a go! All articulations are clearly marked and the vocal sheet is as per Ella's performance. Key of A flat. Don' Cha Go Way Mad by Harry James And The Skylarks. Arranged by Alan Glasscock. For big band with vocal group [SATB]. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2107). Harry James and The Skylarks vocal group briefly joined forces in 1949-50, and came up with this gem of a chart. Don' cha Go 'Way Mad is all about a guy begging forgiveness for cheating on his girlfriend - quite a risky choice of a song for the times. The band and singers gel really well in this song, and the chart itself is not too demanding. Whilst the Skylarks were a 5-piece vocal outfit, we have modified the vocals to make it suitable for a more regular 4-piece (SATB) group. There are no Sax doubles in this chart. Another fine work from the pen of Alan Glasscock. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: D6, Bb5, Bb5, Bb5 Trombones 1-4: A4, Ab4, Ab4, F4 Vocal key: Ab Lowest vocal Db3. Highest vocal Eb5.
