Strictly Instrumental by Harry James. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Medium. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1182). A hit for the Harry James Orchestra, this transcription is taken from James' 1955 studio recording. It is a medium tempo trumpet & tenor feature that just grooves along at a relaxed pace, with a bluesy laid-back feel. James' trumpet solo has been written out in full (including the scream up to super G), but the tenor solo has been left open for improvisation by your player. The brass ranges call for trumpets 3 & 4 to reach high Bb and trombones to reach high A in the unison pasages, though the feel of the chart will not be lost if some of the players drop down an octave. There are no sax doubles.

Golden Wedding by Woody Herman. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by James 'Jiggs' Noble. For big band. Swing. Difficult. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1249). What can we say about the Golden Wedding , other than it is a stunning concert vehicle to show off the talents of your Clarinettist, lead trumpet and drummer. It is a classic chart from the Herman band, and in many ways is Hermans' answer to Sing Sing Sing. The music was written in 1887 by Gabriel Marie, originally entitled "La Cinquantaine", and arranged by James Noble in 1940 and re-used for the 1942 Andrews Sisters film "What's Cookin". The Clarinet part is written to reach high A, but we've added a couple of extra measures at the end, in case you player wishes to aim for high C and bring the house down. Saxes are scored for CATTB Duration: 3 mins, 5 secs / Style: Swing @ 195 b.p.m. Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: B5, E5, C5, A4Trombones 1-4: B5, E5, C5, A4.

When It's Sleepy Time Down South by Ted Heath. Edited by Jon Harpin. Arranged by Bobby Pratt. For big band. Swing. Advanced. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1290). Here is our transcription of the Bobby Pratt version of Sleepy Time Down South, as performed with the Ted Heath band. Bobby was a gifted trumpeter and a great high note player who died tragically young. This chart is an out-and-out Trumpet feature from start to finish, and will need a fine player to make it work. Pratt's solo uses the full range of the instrument, and then some. The last 12 measures of solo part reach super A, though can be played down an octave, but the results are just not the same. Other than the solo, the brass ranges are moderate, with lead Ttrumpet to top D and lead Trombone to B. Alto's 1 & 2 double Clarinets, and there are no other sax doubles. Duration: 3 mins 15 secs / Style: Swing @ 76b.p.m Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: D6, B5, G5, Solo A6Trombones 1-4: B4, G4, Eb4, C4.

When Buddha Smiles by Glen Gray. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Jan Savitt. For big band. Swing. Medium. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1328). Transcribed from the Jan Savitt arrangement as played by Glen Gray on the Time Life Swing Era (1939-1940) session, this is a roaring little up-tempo swing chart that pulses from start to finish. The Tenor, Trumpet and Rhythm solos are written out "as played", though your players can improvise their own if preferred. It's quite a quick tempo, but the chart is relatively simple, very playable and certainly very enjoyable. The chart opens in G, modulates to C for the unison Trombone soli and Tenor solo, and via a cleverly written descending brigde moves into Eb for the Trumpet solo. Another short bridge, taken by the rhythm section, moves the chart to Ab for the shout chorus.Ranges:Trumpets . 1-4: . C6, C6, B5, B5Trombones . 1-4: . Ab4, F4, F4, Eb.

Taking A Chance On Love by Benny Goodman. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Fletcher Henderson. For big band. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2098). Taking a Chance on Love was written in 1940, and despite being a last minute inclusion for the Broadway musical 'Cabin in the Sky' it became the show's most enduring hit. Benny Goodman recorded this version in 1940, featuring the vocal of Helen Forrest. It was re-released in 1943 and charted for 14 weeks including 3 weeks at the number one spot. We have adapted Fletcher Henderson's original Goodman chart up to 8 brass, and have scored the reeds CAATT. There are no sax doubles, the brass ranges are moderate and the short tenor solo and BG's cameo solos are written out as-played. The chart opens in the key of D, modulates to A for the vocal, with the final chorus in Gb. Swing @ 120 bpm. . All The Cats Join In by Peggy Lee. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Frank Devol. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2198). Transcribed from her "Rare Gems & Hidden Treasures" album, this sultry chart shows off Peggy Lee's relaxed, almost drawling vocal style at its best. The arrangement is laid back, cool, very hip for its time and a pleasure to play. The piano, bass and guitar lines are scored as-played, as they cement the feel of the chart. The cameo alto solo is written out too, with chords also provided. This chart is very straightforward, and the brass ranges are quite moderate (with lead trumpet to high C#6 and lead trombone to Bb4). There are no sax doubles and the vocal key is Gm throughout. Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails by Ella Fitzgerald. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Paul Weston. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2299). "top hat" is a transcription of the original paul weston chart, as recorded on ella's " irving berlin songbook " album, and it is a really cool, swingin' chart. we have scored the vocal "as sung" by ella, and whilst there are no solos in the band, the chart features your pianist playing rhythmic fill lines high on the keyboard. unusually, the opening verse of berlin's tune is featured in the middle of the chart in the sort of place that one might expect to hear a tutti band chorus, and this concept works very well. there are no sax doubles and the vocal key is ab , modilating to eb for the central verse, reverting to ab for the final chorus. style: . swing @150 b.p.m.ranges:trumpets . 1-4 . d6, bb5, bb5, bb5 trombones . 1-4 . bb4, g4, gb4, gb4 vocal key ab,eb,ab . . female vocal g3 - c5 (10 steps as sung).

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms arranged by Joel Raney. For rhythm section. Blues/Gospel/Spirituals/Hymntune. Sacred, Comfort, Confidence, Encouragement, Faithfulness, Jazz/SwingStyle, Promise, Blues, Gospel, Spirituals, Hymntune. Rhythm parts. Published by Hope Publishing Company (HP.C5546R). Set in a blues-gospel style, Joel Raney provides an exciting rhythmic, yet surprisingly accessible, treatment to this time-honored, 19th century hymn. The setting begins with a fresh change to 3/4 time and a dramatic use of rests and silence for the singers -- creating a rousing effect. From there this powerful arrangement builds throughout, and culminates in a soul-stirring ending. The Rhythm packet contains parts for: B-3 Organ/Synth, Electric Bass and Drums.
