Rose Room [Studio Orchestra] by Artie Shaw. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob Duboff. Arranged by Lennie Hayton. For studio orchestra (Solo Clarinet, 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, Baritone Saxophone, 4 Trumpets (4th Trumpet Optional), 4 Trombones (4th Trombone Optional), 3 Violins, Viola, Cello, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums). Swing. Medium. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8306). Artie Shaw had enough of the music business in 1939, so he simply walked out on his band and went to Mexico for a rest. In 1940 he was living in Hollywood after returning from a vacation in Mexico. In need of some money and to fulfill his RCA Victor recording contract, he made some recordings with a studio orchestra (big band and strings). One of those recordings, 'Frenesi,' became a smash hit, and Shaw became a bandleader again. With the power of a hit record, he figured that if he was back in the band business, he would do it his way, with 3 violins, viola and cello added to his big band. He accepted an offer to lead the house band on the Burns & Allen Radio Show during the summer of 1940. During this time, Shaw's new band was playing in San Francisco and he traveled to Hollywood once a week to do the radio show. His studio orchestra book was made up of new arrangements plus adaptations of his past hits. He hired Lennie Hayton to become one of his staff arrangers. One of the projects was the modification of Shaw's 1939 arrangement of 'Rose Room' to fit this ensemble. Shaw served in WWII, and in 1944 he put together a new band without the strings. At this time Harry Rogers added baritone saxophone, trumpet 4 and trombone 4 parts (considered optional). All of these modifications have been put together for this publication of Rose Room. We feel certain that Shaw would approve. Ranges: Trumpet 1: to C6; Trombone 1: to Bb4.

No Name Jive by Glen Gray. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1032). This is simply a great jump jive number, made famous by the Glen Gray Orchestra, and to the best of out knowledge has never been published before, anywhere. If your band plays to a dance crowd then this arrangement is an absolute must have. No Name Jive is a huge six and a half minutes long, and drives from beginning to end. Technically it's not difficult, though the band needs to be tight and crisp in order to achieve the relaxed feel that makes the number work so well. There are some instrument doubles. Saxes 1,2 and 3 all double Clarinet, and the Baritone doubles Alto. Lead Alto also needs a Soprano if your Alto 2 can't hit high F# anf A. All solos are written out as exact transcriptions of the original, though players may improvise if they wish. The second trumpet takes two solos and both are cross cued on the lead part. The score sample is the first 6 pages of a 35 page score, which we have ring-bound for ease of use.

Rose Of The Rio Grande edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob DuBoff. Arranged by Gerry Mulligan. For big band. Recorded by the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. Swing. Medium Difficult. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8455). Rose of the Rio Grande was probably written in 1948, but could have been written a little later. Frankly, it is an amazing score, certainly one of the greatest arrangements Mulligan ever wrote, but also reflective of his maturity as a writer. The introduction alone sounds like it was written twenty years later; it is so unique for its time that the rest of the arrangement almost sounds like an anti-climax, except that Mulligan also wrote one of the great out-choruses in big band history for this setting. He knew how good it was, since he reused it for his own composition Swing House written for Stan Kenton in 1952. This arrangement would not be recorded by Thornhill until 1953 for Albert Marx's Trend label. Alto sax 1 doubles on clarinet. The brass instrumentation is: 3 trumpets, 2 horns in F, 2 trombones, and tuba. We have included optional alternate parts for the horns in F and tuba (see below). Ranges: Trumpet 1: to A6; Trombone 1: to Ab4.
