That's Mr. Blakey, to You! by Rick Helzer. For jazz ensemble (trumpet (or alto saxophone), alto saxophone (or tenor saxophone), trombone (baritone saxophone), piano, bass and drums). Swing. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.609). An exciting up-tempo piece that blends three different rhythmic styles in the theme and the solo sections. The chord changes are very challenging and require a working knowledge of altered modes and chromatic modal harmony concepts. The solo section of the arrangement closes with an ostinato section that features the drums accompanied by the rest of the sextet. Programmatically, this piece would work well as a set or performance closer. Trumpet (or Alto Sax), Alto Sax (or Tenor Sax) Trombone (Baritone Sax) with Piano, Bass and Drums.

Red With Blue Accents by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (solos for trombone and trumpet). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Waltz, Latin, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.700). (Level V) This is what you get when you mix blues with a Latin feel. The fast waltz begins and ends in 4/4, yet feels just right. Trombone and trumpet play the line in octaves. Two choruses of ensemble build to a rhythmically exciting kick off to the trombone solo. The ensemble returns as a transition to the trumpet solo. The band metrically modulates to a slower 4/4 as a change of pace from the fast 3/4 and shifts back to the fast waltz in the middle of the trumpet solo. Then, the band overlaps the last trumpet solo and returns to the original theme. The two soloists trade eights at the end before a climax in 4/4. A final chord is like an afterglow, hangover heat remaining after the burning chart. 8 Brass.

Rose Of The Rio Grande edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob DuBoff. Arranged by Gerry Mulligan. For big band. Recorded by the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. Swing. Medium Difficult. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8455). Rose of the Rio Grande was probably written in 1948, but could have been written a little later. Frankly, it is an amazing score, certainly one of the greatest arrangements Mulligan ever wrote, but also reflective of his maturity as a writer. The introduction alone sounds like it was written twenty years later; it is so unique for its time that the rest of the arrangement almost sounds like an anti-climax, except that Mulligan also wrote one of the great out-choruses in big band history for this setting. He knew how good it was, since he reused it for his own composition Swing House written for Stan Kenton in 1952. This arrangement would not be recorded by Thornhill until 1953 for Albert Marx's Trend label. Alto sax 1 doubles on clarinet. The brass instrumentation is: 3 trumpets, 2 horns in F, 2 trombones, and tuba. We have included optional alternate parts for the horns in F and tuba (see below). Ranges: Trumpet 1: to A6; Trombone 1: to Ab4.
