C Jam Blues by Duke Ellington (1899-1974). Arranged by Bill Holman. For jazz ensemble (5-4-4-4). Swing. Grade 5. Score and parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-1078). This great chart is recorded (1999) on the Azica CD "Swingin' the Blues." Holman grabs this simple Ellington tune and runs with it. The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble "shout" choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. You will have a blast with this one. 5-4-4-4.

Butch And Butch (Individual Arrangement from The Blues And The Abstract Truth). Edited by Rob Duboff and Jeffrey Sultanof. Arranged by Oliver Nelson. For jazz combo (alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums). Swing. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8856). This is one title out of 6 arrangements from the Oliver Nelson 1961 album The Blues and the Abstract Truth. In February of 1961, the sessions that later constituted the album Blues and the Abstract Truth were recorded for a new jazz label distributed by ABC-Paramount, Impulse Records. The sessions were produced by Creed Taylor, who would go on to produce classic recordings on the Verve label, and his own CTI label. Oliver Nelson had a career full of highlights by 1961. Originally from St Louis, Missouri, he had played in the bands of Louis Jordan, Louis Bellson, Erskine Hawkins, Wild Bill Davis and Quincy Jones. He had also been a house arranger at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem in New York City. Nelson had made some albums under his own name as well. But it was this album that became his first masterpiece. An all-star ensemble was assembled: with Nelson were Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, George Barrow, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes. One of the compositions on the album became a standard: Stolen Moments. The album received ecstatic reviews from the jazz press and has rarely been out of print since it’s original release. Nelson went from success to success, making big band and small group albums in a variety of settings under his own name and accompanying jazz and pop artists. He composed symphonic music as well, and toured extensively even after he moved to Los Angeles in 1967 and became established in the film and television world. He also gave workshops and seminars. He was only 43 when he died in 1975. Thanks to an agreement with Oliver Nelson, Jr, this item is now available, edited using Nelson’s original manuscripts. Nelson now joins the legendary names whose music is now available from Jazz Lines Publications. This item is arranged for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums.

Buster's Last Stand by Claude Thornhill. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof. Arranged by Gil Evans. For jazz big band (2 alto saxophones (double clarinet), 2 tenor saxophones, baritone saxophone, clarinet (optional), 4 trumpets (4th alternate for horn 1), 2 horns in F, 3 trombones (3rd alternate for horn 2), guitar, piano, bass, drums, 2 trombones). Swing. Difficult. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8138). Background: In the mid 1930s, Gil Evans was leading a Benny Goodman-styled big band on the west coast. Surviving airchecks of this ensemble show it to be an impressive unit that certainly had the potential to become quite successful. However, vocalist Skinnay Ennis of the Hal Kemp Orchestra was going out on his own, and Evans's agency decided that Ennis should take Evans's orchestra. Along with Ennis came pianist/arranger Claude Thornhill, and the two arrangers became fast friends. When Thornhill formed his own orchestra, Evans came with him, although he continued to write for the Ennis ensemble. The Music: Buster's Last Stand is one of the few fast swing pieces that the Thornhill band played. They recorded it for Columbia Records in 1942 shortly before a ban on recording was imposed by the music union, and it remained in the book when the Thornhill ensemble was re-formed in 1946. This edition of Buster's Last Stand comes from photocopies of the original parts except for the reeds, which were recopied years later for a performance by the American Jazz Orchestra (the original parts appear to be in very rough shape). There are some differences between the Columbia recording and this version, suggesting the Evans continued to refine and tinker with the piece after the war. A sixth reed was present at the original recording session, and this part seems to be missing. It is reconstructed here, although it is optional. Notes to the Conductor: During the big band era, this sort of devilishly-fast composition was called a flagwaver, used to end a set as a set-up for big applause. Although it was not their norm, Thornhill's ensemble proved that it could handle such a piece, as the performance of this tricky music is played near flawlessly for the Columbia recording. Since Thornhill and Evans were very particular about how their music was played, there must have been a lot of rehearsal to get this piece just right. We have included optional 4th trumpet and 3rd trombone parts that are alternates for the two horn in F parts. But, you should only use them if you don't have the horn players available. Both alto saxophones double clarinet. And, the 6th reed is an optional clarinet part.

Bugle Call Rag by Traditional. Arranged by Bill Holman. Jazz Ensemble / Jazz Band. Doc Severinsen Series. Fast Swing. Grade 5. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-951). As recorded by the Tonight Show Band on "Once More With Feeling" (Amherst), this wonderful chart is the hottest "flag-waver" of all time. Holman starts things out with the trumpet section's "call to arms," and things swing on from there. There is, of course, a trumpet solo and also room for an extensive tenor saxophone solo. Everything builds to a strong, exciting ending. You'll love it. 5-5-4-3 (on demo CD 117).

Bugle Call Rag by Benny Goodman. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Advanced. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LLM-1194). This arrangement of Bugle Call Rag, originally scored for the band by Jimmy Mundy, was one of the charts that helped launch the Benny Goodman Orchestra into the swing era that fateful August day at the Palomar Ballroom in 1935. The 1936 studio recording has been transcribed here, and it has been adapted to 8 brass whilst maintaining the feel and flair of the original chart. All of the solos are written out in full - clarinet, trombone, tenor & trumpet - and Gene Krupa's little drum licks behind the solo breaks have been included as well. The reeds are scored for CAATT, and both altos double on clarinet. This is a fast, challenging chart, and highly rewarding to play.
