Media Event - Miami Suite Movement IV by Christopher Jentsch. For jazz ensemble (soprano saxophone and drums feature). Jazz, Medium, Swing. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1733). (8 Brass) A tour de force of controlled E pedal contrapuntal mayhem, Media Event" is a feature for soprano sax and drums. The original tune is based on Coltrane's Resolution; and there are plenty of Elvin/'Trane-style eight-bar phrases for the soloist and the ensemble. Some heavy trombone writing and a certain relentlessness make this a V. Thematic material from other movements serve as backgrounds and counter themes. Like all the movements in the Miami Suite, Media Event is doubly designed to be a stand-alone piece or to serve as the fourth movement. Reed II plays soprano sax throughout, soprano voice tacet and no other doubles. Recorded by the University of Miami's Concert Jazz Band on Jentsch's Miami Suite CD.

Old Friends by Alan D. Neveu. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to G6. Up Tempo, Fast Swing, Jazz. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.974). (Level IV) This tune was inspired by a re-gathering of two of my close friends from high school and was written for the Eastman Jazz Ensemble I. The piece was named the winner of the 1996 Down Beat Student Music Awards Competition in the extended original composition category. Old Friends is a fast piece with an extended form that makes for a great opener or closer. Compositionally, the piece uses a motive of three notes from which the harmonies are also derived. The three-note motive is contrasted with sections of wild two-part counterpoint. The soloists featured include trumpet, piano, tenor 1, and guitar. 8 Brass.

Out of Town by Jennifer Barnes. For jazz choir (SSAA choir with rhythm section). Swing, Up Tempo, Jazz, Fast. Jennifer Barnes Series. Level 5. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ1257). (Level 5) This is a burning fast, wordless, very challenging modern bebop head as recorded by the Yellowjackets on Four Corners. The melody may be divided up into several small groups for variety and relief! Other than the unison and two-part head, there is a "shout chorus" and an improv section that may be opened up. Your rhythm section is key to making this one work in light of the burning swing tempo (almost straight-eight) that must be maintained. Well worth the hard work it takes to learn if your group is really ready for a challenge! SSATTB or SSAA with rhythm section.

Bugle Call Rag by Benny Goodman. Arranged by Myles Collins. For big band. Swing. Advanced. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1194). This arrangement of Bugle Call Rag, originally scored for the band by Jimmy Mundy, was one of the charts that helped launch the Benny Goodman Orchestra into the swing era that fateful August day at the Palomar Ballroom in 1935. The 1936 studio recording has been transcribed here, and it has been adapted to 8 brass whilst maintaining the feel and flair of the original chart. All of the solos are written out in full - clarinet, trombone, tenor & trumpet - and Gene Krupa's little drum licks behind the solo breaks have been included as well. The reeds are scored for CAATT, and both altos double on clarinet. This is a fast, challenging chart, and highly rewarding to play.

When It's Sleepy Time Down South by Ted Heath. Edited by Jon Harpin. Arranged by Bobby Pratt. For big band. Swing. Advanced. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1290). Here is our transcription of the Bobby Pratt version of Sleepy Time Down South, as performed with the Ted Heath band. Bobby was a gifted trumpeter and a great high note player who died tragically young. This chart is an out-and-out Trumpet feature from start to finish, and will need a fine player to make it work. Pratt's solo uses the full range of the instrument, and then some. The last 12 measures of solo part reach super A, though can be played down an octave, but the results are just not the same. Other than the solo, the brass ranges are moderate, with lead Ttrumpet to top D and lead Trombone to B. Alto's 1 & 2 double Clarinets, and there are no other sax doubles. Duration: 3 mins 15 secs / Style: Swing @ 76b.p.m Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: D6, B5, G5, Solo A6Trombones 1-4: B4, G4, Eb4, C4.

Vilia by Artie Shaw. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Artie Shaw. For big band. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1327). Here is Artie Shaw's delightfully quirky take on Vilia, from The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar. Being a Shaw chart it naturally features clarinet, with some smooth ensemble writing and a flowing sax soli too. The brass ranges are moderate, with no hidden surprises and Shaw's clarinet solo is written out in full, though, if preferred, your player can improvise from the chords. The reeds are scored CAATT, with the 4 saxes having clarinet doubles. However, the sax parts double sided, with a "no clarinet double" option on the reverse, in case your section doesn't all double. Style: Swing @ 145 b.p.m. Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: B5, G5, F5, D5Trombones 1-4: Bb4, G4, E4, C4.

All The Cats Join In by Peggy Lee. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Frank Devol. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium Easy. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2198). Transcribed from her "Rare Gems & Hidden Treasures" album, this sultry chart shows off Peggy Lee's relaxed, almost drawling vocal style at its best. The arrangement is laid back, cool, very hip for its time and a pleasure to play. The piano, bass and guitar lines are scored as-played, as they cement the feel of the chart. The cameo alto solo is written out too, with chords also provided. This chart is very straightforward, and the brass ranges are quite moderate (with lead trumpet to high C#6 and lead trombone to Bb4). There are no sax doubles and the vocal key is Gm throughout. Style: Swing @ 150 b.p.m.Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: C#6, A5, G5, E5Trombones 1-4: Bb4, Gb4, Eb4, B3Vocal key: GmVocal Range: G3 - A4 (9 steps).

Walkin' My Baby Back Home by Natalie Cole. Edited by Myles Collins. Arranged by Bill Holman. For big band with vocal duet. Swing. Difficult. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2322). Transcribed from Natalie Cole's "Still Unforgettable" album, this chart is a really clever fusion of old and new, as it combines elements of Nat King Cole's original recording along with his daughters' fresher interpretation. The chart is scored for reeds to double Flutes and Clarinets in the intro (F, F, C, C, BC) though we have cued alternate sax lines here, eliminating the need for the doubles. The vocal is scored for a boy / girl duet, as per the record version. We have rated it Medium / Advanced only because the Trumpet lines are high in their range, with lead to top E and 2nd & 3rd to top C#. Aside from this it is a fairly easy chart to play down. The vocal keys are A, modulating to Db and D. Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: E6, C#6, C#6, B5Trombones 1-4: Bb4, F#4, E4, D4Vocal Key: A to Db to DVocal Range: Ab3 - C5, Nat C3 - E4.
