Originally composed and arranged in the 1930’s for 4 reeds and 5 brass, Benny re-scored this version for a larger band some 50 years later. Benny was known for his idiomatic saxophone writing and this chart is a great example of that. Just when you think that the soli chorus at D is as good as his saxophone writing can get, he modulates and tops it with the brilliant new section at I. This is a transitional piece between the pre-swing of the 1920s and the mid-1930s swing.

Although the copyright date is 1939, the only performance of this piece is the Victor recording from 1941. This obscure piece never achieved the mild popularity of Ellington’s other 2 Latin masterpieces of that era- Conga Brava and Flaming Sword, but don’t sell this gem short just because you never heard of it.

Chet's Call by Metheny / Mays. Arranged by Bob Curnow. Jazz Ensemble / Jazz Band. The Pat Metheny Big Band Series. Swing. Grade 4. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-981). This piece was never recorded by the Pat Metheny Group. It was "lost in history" until discovered on a 1985 radio transcription. Pat says this was written for a gig with Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins and Chet Baker "that never happened." It is a wonderful, swinging tune that has solo space for alto sax, trumpet (or trombone) and drums. "Chet's Call" is a very playable piece, with limited range concerns. This is a side of Pat & Lyle that is rarely heard these days. A great tune ! 5-4-4-4 (on demo CD 117).

The Buddy Rich Band played this chart for years! A sensational arrangement of a great tune in an up-tempo setting. This is recorded on the "Big Swing Face" CD. Solo space for alto sax, trumpet, tenor sax and, of course, some wonderful drum breaks. This is "in-your-face", outrageous, exciting music, exactly as written for and recorded by the Buddy Rich band.
