Get Out Of Town by Lena Horne. Edited by Cy Payne. Arranged by Lennie Hayton. For big band with vocal. Swing. Medium Difficult. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.PH-4266). This laid back, medium-groove Lena Horne version of the Cole Porter standard is now featured on the recent album 'Essential Jazz Singers'. Although recorded in the 1950s this number just does not date. A great walking bass line, drums on brushes and perfect section writing for the horns add up to the ideal combination. Transcribed by Cy Payne and in the key as recorded. Francy Boland no doubt had this version in mind when he created the instrumental chart for the 'All Smiles' 1968 Clarke Boland Big Band album.Ranges:Vocal Key: . F to EbTrumpet 1: . E6Trombone 1: . Poet And Peasant by Glen Gray. Arranged by Billy May. For big band. Swing. Advanced. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-1286). Billy May wrote many fine charts during his illustrious career, and this is one of them. Written for the talented, and often underrated Casa Loma Orchestra, this arrangement of Franz von Suppe's Poet and Peasant Overture is going to be a challenging blow for even the best bands. It is tough, even at the professional level, with some big asks being made in all sections of the band. The tempo is up, there are frequent changes of rhythmic feel, lots of unison sectional runs where a wrong note will stick out like a sore thumb, and at over 5 minutes it is a long blow. We're not trying to put you off here, just letting you know what to expect. However, if you have the players to cope with the demands of the chart it will be a rewarding experience. All the parts are printed booklet fold, else they would run to 8 pages long and be impossible to keep on the music stands. Both Altos double clarinet. Duration: 5 mins 5 secs; Style: Swing @ 224, 140 and 280 b.p.m. Ranges: Trumpets 1-4: E6, E6, Eb6, F5 Trombones 1-4: C5, Ab4, Bb4, F4.

Temptation by Charlie Parker With Big Band And Strings. Arranged by Joe Lipman. For big band with strings. Beguine/Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8042). Here is Joe Lipman's brilliant big band with strings arrangement that he did for Charlie Parker. This was recorded in 1952 and is presented here directly from the original manuscript. This is NOT a transcription. However, everything Parker played on this recording has been transcribed and presented here as-played, though we have also included (in a separate staff) what was originally written for him. So, this arrangement can certainly be played without the need to mimic Bird. This chart was scored for solo alto sax, 2 altos (both double flute and alto 1 doubles picolo), 2 tenors (both double clarinet), baritone sax (doubles English horn - written in F), 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 4 violins, 2 violas, 2 celli, harp, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. The brass parts have been augmented to 4 trumpets and 4 trombones. In addition, a baritone sax part with a clarinet double has been included in the event that you don't have access to an English horn.

Bonehead by Lennie Niehaus. For jazz ensemble. Standard jazz ensemble. Kendor Jazz Archive Series. Swing. Advanced. Score and Set of Parts. Published by Kendor Music Inc (KN.52112). Fashioned after the playing of J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, this moderate swing original casts the trombone section in a variety of starring roles -- solis, trading 'fours' with the rest of the band, and a short ad lib solo. Some sax soli work and a short trumpet solo give the 'bones a chance to rest their chops before the chart goes out strong. Duration 3:50.

Sound Bites by Jim McNeely. For jazz ensemble (soprano saxophone solo). This edition: Trumpet range to F6. Swing, Groove, Latin, Funk. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.889). (Level IV) A composition written for Dave Liebman with the West German Radio Big Band, this piece created quite a stir at the IAJE convention in Miami (with the Miami University Jazz Ensemble). The tempo and groove continually shift between a slow funk, medium Latin, and medium swing feel. The solo soprano part is in addition to the regular 5-part sax section, and employs the kind of modern chromatic harmony associated with Dave. This chart is more difficult for its harmonic and rhythmic conception than for its notes. 9 Brass.

C Jam Blues by Duke Ellington (1899-1974). Arranged by Bill Holman. For jazz ensemble (5-4-4-4). Swing. Grade 5. Score and parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-1078). This great chart is recorded (1999) on the Azica CD "Swingin' the Blues." Holman grabs this simple Ellington tune and runs with it. The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble "shout" choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. You will have a blast with this one. 5-4-4-4.
