Just One Of Those Things by Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass. Edited by Rob DuBoff and Jeffrey Sultanof. Arranged by Rob McConnell. For big band. Swing, Jazz. Advanced. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-7041). Well, what can you say about Rob McConnell's writing that hasn't already been said? His writing is consistently interesting, surprising, and swinging. This arrangement is a perfect example of why he was one of the most important writers of the second half of the 20th Century. He takes the Cole Porter standard Just One of Those Things and turns it on its head. For the first chorus Rob took an improvised solo and harmonized it for the reeds (ala Supersax). The arrangement drops down to half time with some nice swinging figures until it gradually starts to accelerate back to tempo I. This accelerando section (16 bars) will be tricky for any band to pull off but is an amazing effect. This arrangement features solos for trumpet 5 and trombone 5 (those parts were written for Guido Basso and McConnell himself). There is no getting around the fact that this arrangement will require work from even the most experienced bands. There are reed doubles, some meter changes, tempo changes, and high range notes for brass. But, if you have the time and players this would be a standout piece for any festival or concert Ranges: Trumpet 1: to E6, Trumpet 2: to C6, Trombone 1: to Bb4.

Honeysuckle Rose by Tsunenori ''Lee'' Abe. For jazz choir and big band (SATB vocal quartet and 5-7 brass). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Swing, Medium Swing, Standard, Jazz. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1856). (7 Brass) Being a good entertainer is the key for this arrangement of a medium-swing jazz standard scored for vocal jazz quartet (SATB) and big band (5-7). Starting with a solo tenor singer accompanied by drums with brushes, a whole band has more role than just playing the right notes - shouting a couple of words! Includes scat solos and an alto sax solo. A great closer!

It's a free-wheeling, up-tempo "blues with bridge" which features guitar and drum solos. The drum solo section is enhanced by a number of collective backgrounds which can be brought in at will by the conductor, to spontaneously spur the drummer on. There are five trumpet parts. 9 Brass.

Mel by Jim McNeely. For big band. This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Jazz, Swing, Fast, Up Tempo. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.881). (Level V) This piece is constructed around a number of facets of the playing of the late, great drummer Mel Lewis. It begins slowly with a quote from Thad Jones's To You (the last piece Mel ever played with his band). It then turns into a medium, up-tempo romp with a lot of ensemble work. Solo is in tenor 2, moving through a number of keys with a lot of II-V-I's. There is (naturally) a drum solo, featuring an improvised call-and-response section between the drummer and the ensemble. 9 Brass.

Skittish by Jim McNeely. For jazz ensemble (guitar, piano and bass solos). This edition: Trumpet range to B6. Swing. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.888). (Level V) This piece is the second movement of East Coast Blow Out, a suite Jim wrote for John Scofield and the West German Radio (W.D.R.) Big Band in 1989. It's currently available on Lipstick Records "*****" -Down Beat). A technically and conceptually challenging piece, it requires strong solos by the guitarist, pianist, and bassist. There are parts for an expanded rhythm section of solo guitar, "section" guitar, synthesizer, piano, bass, and drums. The chart does work, however, without the synth and "section" guitar parts. 9 Brass.

Sticks by Jim McNeely. For jazz ensemble (trombone solo; woodwind doubles). This edition: Trumpet range to D#6. Up Tempo Fast Swing. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.890). (Level V) This piece was designed to be a mini-concerto for Ed Neumeister. It utilizes the pixie-mute/plunger set up (a la "Tricky Sam" Nanton and Quentin Jackson), in a darker, more dissonant harmonic palette than normal. The solo requires flexibility over a couple of unusual scales and has a free cadenza at the end. For the adventurous director who has an adventurous trombone soloist!! Alto 1 doubles flute and soprano, alto 2 doubles clarinet, tenor 1 and 2 double clarinet. 8 Brass.

Thad by Jim McNeely. For jazz ensemble (solos for piano, trombone and trumpet). This edition: Trumpet range to F#6. Swing. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.892). (Level V) This is a tribute to Thad Jones. The piece captures the feeling of some of his greatest pieces, such as Don't Get Sassy, Mean What You Say, and A-That's Freedom. It begins as a Thadian, 16-bar blues in Ab. There is a large sprinkling of quotes from Thad's music throughout, including a 32-bar, "cut and paste" section of quotes shoe-horned into the form of the tune. Solos are piano, trombone 1 and trumpet 4. 8 Brass.
