It was during his stay at Freiburg, Germany where he was attending a Music Festival of the German Band Confederation in '86, that Kees Vlak found inspiration for this romantic work. At this festival he was awarded a prize for one of his compositions. He lived in the small village of Horben, hidden among pine woods on a mountain at the border of the Black Forest. Each morning a blackbird singing in a huge pine next to the composer's window woke him up. This bird song opens the composition. The second theme paints the lake 'Titisee'. The new theme is closely linked to the hunt and played by the typical German helicon-like euphoniums. This theme interacts with the second theme and the work ends with a grand finale meant as a musical hommage to this wonderful area.

Well, here is one of the most famous holiday season arrangements of all time! You can't close out a New Year's Eve performance without this song. This version was arranged and recorded by Guy Lombardo in 1939. This is a syrupy sweet arrangement featuring alto saxophones all the way. It was originally scored for 2 altos, 2 tenors, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, celeste, and arco bass (no drums or guitar). We have expanded the arrangement to suit most bands and it is now scored for 3 altos (baritone on alto), 2 tenors, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, piano, arco bass. The only drums are at the very end. While this is technically one of the easiest arrangements out there, the tricky part is getting the band's sax section to have that sweet, heavy vibrato, 1930s sound.

Johann Strauss Jr. (1825-1899) will always be remembered and loved for his innumerable splendid waltzes. Besides a great number of marches, galops and polkas, he also composed sixteen operettas. 'The Gipsy Baron' is an operetta in three acts, based on a libretto by J. Schnitzer; the latter in fact adapted the short story 'Saffi' written by Maurus Jokai, editor of a Budapest newspaper. The operetta was premiered on 24 october 1885 at the 'An der Wien' Theatre, the day before the composer's sixtieth birthday. The plot is set in the seventeenth century and deals with SandA!r Barinkay's return home. When he wants to recover the land of his ancestors he discovers that Gipsies have got hold of it. In the course of many adventures he falls in love with the gipsy girl 'Saffi', who finally turns out to be a real princess. According to the tradition, the charming overture contains many of the most beautiful songs and melodies of this successful operetta. The Japanese arranger Akira Yodo made this brilliant arrangement for wind band.

Duration 3 minutes, 11 seconds. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.012311080-S). Johann Strauss Junior wrote this 'Perpetuum Mobile' opus 257 in 1861, inspired by a grand Viennese Ball. This event had been announced as a 'Carnival Perpetuum Mobile' with non-stop dancing and music. The Strauss Brothers conducted alternately, so the music and the dancing never stopped. This composition consists of 24 variations on a theme of 8 bars, allowing a small solopart to almost all instruments. As is often the case with Johann Straui!!'s compositions, the point comes at the end. This ingenious musical satire, subtitled 'A musical Joke', immediately became the big success of the Summer Concert Season of the Strauss Orchestra in the Russian town of Pavlovsk in 1862.
