Of Thee I Sing was commissioned by Major Donald E. Schofield for the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America. As the title suggests, the composition is based on the familiar patriotic tune "America." The piece is organized in three major sections that develop material from the song. Following an introduction, an original melody, lyrical and flowing in character with only a vague reference to the tune, is stated first in the horns and then throughout the ensemble. The middle section is driven by motivic fragments interspersed with intense percussion. The fragments coalesce into recognizable phrases from the tune, building to a peak. The music then transitions to the third and final section, a developed setting of "America" in its entirety. The piece ends with a glorious statement of the theme in the full ensemble.

Lady singer Dame Vera Lewis-Welch, better known as Vera Lynn, (East Ham, London, 1918) performed with the bands of Joe Loss, Charlie Kunz and Ambrose. During the Second World War she inspired all British soldiers involved in the war and got the surname "Sweetheart of the Forces." In the fifties she presented her own B.B.C. television shows. Willy Hautvast arranged her four most famous songs: "We'll meet again," "Now is the Hour," "From the time you say goodbye" and "The White Cliffs of Dover.".

Very little original music has come to us from the American Revolution. The majority of the songs were well-known tunes from the British Isles, with words written for those tunes by colonial tunesmiths. For example: "The British Grenadiers", of English origin, was used as the tune, with new words written to become "Free America". One familiar exception to this practice is "Chester", with words and music by William Billings. The first verse was written as a hymn in 1770, and was later adapted for use in the Revolution by the addition of other verses extolling the ideas and virtues of New England colonists. It was then used as a march and became the most popular of the Revolutionary War tunes.
