You Should Know Better by Sharon Broadley. For jazz choir (SATB choir with rhythm section). Rock, Jazz. Level 3. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ149). (Level 3) This allows sopranos and altos to "rock out" in gutsy unison. Male voices play more of a supporting role. The "hook" of the piece is in four-part harmony and challenges the sense of time of any group as they must relax repeated quarter note, on-the-beat phrases over and over again. Not the easiest crossover tune. The challenge of simplicity can be deceiving. This chart also includes three-horn type vocal filler licks a la Chicago. SATB with rhythm section.

Ooh-Whee (The Carnival) by Jennifer Barnes. For jazz choir (SSAA choir with rhythm section and percussion). Funk, Latin, Pop, Funk, Salsa, Jazz, Rock. Jennifer Barnes Series. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ1248). (Level 4) Funky, very fun chart for women as performed by Patti Austin (on Love is Gonna Getcha), with contrasting Latin-ish pop, funk and salsa feels. There are three verses of lead solo vocals for one or several soloists to share and a funk chorus that rocks! The background and ensemble vocals have some challenging moments but are lots of fun to sing. Your rhythm section needs to be able to read notes and chord changes as well as being ready to get funky! SSAA with rhythm section including percussion.

The main melody snakes its way chromatically around an extended C7 tonality, supported by a grooving bass line and multiple ostinati. The bridge section is a modal fugue, which meanders through a series of remote keys. After an extended soprano solo, the bass clarinet (or bari) provides an ad lib obligato as the band builds through a series of varied statements of the melody, leading to a big climax. Lots of intriguing textures, featuring flute, piccolo (opt.), clarinet, bass clarinet (opt.), soprano and flugel doublings. Electric piano and bass recommended. 9 Brass.
