Trombone Concerto. (Trombone Feature). By Derek Bourgeois (1941-). For Soloist(s) with Concert Band (Solo Trombone, Piccolo, 1st Flute, 2nd Flute, Oboes, Eb Clarinet*, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, 3rd Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet*, Bb Bass Clarinet, Eb Alto Saxophone, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone*, 1st/2nd F Horn, 3rd/4th F Horn, 1st B). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 5. Score and parts. Duration 20:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.R10024). The first movement of Derek Bourgeois' Trombone Concerto is constructed Classically: the solo trombone immediately launches into the opening theme in F minor, conceived harmonically in a sequence of descending thirds and it is the solo trombone too that introduces the lyrical second idea, in A flat, presented over chords which are given mobility by dark-toned alto and bass clarinets. These contrasting subjects give the composer ample opportunity to let loose his fertile imagination, whether expanding on the Baroque qualities of the opening material in a fugato section for woodwinds, or boldly stating the romantic second theme on brass leading to cascading sextuplets, or with the soloist presenting the first theme in augmentation against a ripple of semi-quavers.After this development, there is virtually a formal recapitulations in the woodwinds and the soloist repeats the second theme in tonic (F) major. The movement closes with pianissimo chords - no great bravura here, but leading us in mood to the second movement which opens a tone lower in E-flat.Here, the rich tone of the soloist is matched by three accompanying trombones - with the writing equaling the expressiveness of a cello quartet. Gradually, the rest of the low brass join as the solo trombone weaves a seamless, almost Wagnerian theme, extending phrases sequentially. This movement has two separate thoughts and a solo clarinet answers the trombone with a new theme accompanied only by three horns, euphonium, and pizzicato string bass.Whilst most of the slow movement is contemplative, Bourgeois allows the band to unleash the full fortissimo passion implied in the second, clarinet theme, before the movement closes as it began - but this time only two trombones accompany the soloist, and all three are muted. After the passion of the slow movement, Bourgeois adopts a Classical rondo form as a 6/8 Scherzo, marked Presto, which gives the release we need. It is fun, to be thrown off lightly as we enjoy the semitone shifts with a wry smile. Towards the end of the movement is a cadenza which alludes to the thematic content of the first movement, but aurally the hard work has been done. For the soloist however, the music requires a virtuoso combination of slide and tongue.Derek Bourgeois' Trombone Concerto was commissioned by the British Trombone Society for the International Trombone Workshop at Eton, England, July 1989 with gratefully acknowledged assistance from Southern Arts. The world premiere was given by Christian Lindberg.

Interpretations by Roger Cichy. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bb Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Tro). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 9:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10440). "Interpretations" was conceived as a collaborative arts project by composer Roger Cichy for the Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. This commission was designed to encompass several of the arts by drawing on the fine arts, music, and dance within the academy. Mr. Cichy's composition, therefore, is a musical 'interpretation' based on four selected student art pieces, hence the title. Following the completion of the musical 'interpretations,' the academy's dance department choreographed dances based on the newly composed music. "Interpretations" was premiered by projecting the original student artwork on a large screen as the wind ensemble and dance ensembles performed the work live. The opening movement, 'Mask,' based on a three-dimensional black and white mask, reflects the bipolar elements incorporated in its design. Here Cichy uses the brass and percussion in angular melodies, dramatic rhythms, and vertical harmonies to illustrate one aspect of the mask. A lyrical and subdued texture is created by the woodwind section along with subtle percussion to act as the opposing pole. The indicated style for 'Shrouded Figure,' "Sinister yet mysterious," easily describes the character of this movement. Cichy draws on several compositional techniques to enhance the mystery of the unidentified figure in the art piece. The movement titled 'Popped Corn' depicts a single kernel of popcorn as it lies with its energy spent on the burst, now in a motionless state. The music for this movement incorporates a lazy blues style to imitate the lifeless dimensions of the still-life art piece.'Self Portrait' (of the artist, not the composer) contains an array of colors and geometric patterns culminating in an image of a face. In this movement, Cichy's use of irregular meters and quick tempos transposes the energy and impulse created by the artwork. The artwork upon which this composition is based was created by the following student artists:David Corner, MaskElizabeth Zeibig, Shrouded FigureGreer Monaghan, Popped CornMarassa Streniste, Self Portrait.

Okaoka by Christopher Marshall. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, 2, 3, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet in Bb 1, 2, 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1, 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, 2, 3, Horn in F 1, 2, Trombone 1, 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, String Bass, Timpani, Percussion ). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 5:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10970). This music is inspired by my memories of the unique sights and sounds of the Pacific Islands of Samoa, where I lived and worked for three years (1989-1992).Okaoka! (pronounced 'awkaAWka') is a Samoan exclamation of surprise -- something like "Wow!" in English. Most Samoan dance is accompanied by song and this one is built on the light-hearted song "Okaoka La'u Honey" where the singer compares his lover to some of the most sought-after and exotic foods availble in Samoa at the turn of the 20th century. The music starts in a reflective mood, as if the singer is trying to recall the words of the song. Then flowing lines suggest a single dancer performing the graceful, dignified movements of the 'siva sa'o', or formal dance. Gradually more and more dancers join in, excitement builds, and the music becomes an expression of unrestrained exuberance. Then, as in a dream, the sounds and images of the dancers dissolve in the fragrant calm of the night.

Pandemonium by Roger Cichy. Arranged by M. McDermott. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1/2). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 6:40. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11070). The word 'pandemonium,' invented by 17th Century English author John Milton, first appeared in his literary work Paradise Lost. Little would Milton have known that his word creation would be used so commonly in the 21st Century. With significant events occurring in contemporary times such as 9/11, the Pacific tsunami, and hurricane Katrina, the word pandemonium has been commonly attached to the state of riotous uproar, chaos and mass confusion. With an array of meanings, the word can be defined as: wild lawlessness, utter chaos, a place or scene of uproar or chaos, and more astringently as: the abode of all the demons or even, the capitol of hell. (Note the word 'demon' in the center of the word.)Beyond these definitions, the word can be used in a more personal context and describe a state of being that occurs in our individual lives upon being presented with tragic or startling news--a feeling of confusion and uncertainly. At other times, individuals may feel pandemonium when referring to their busy and overwhelming lifestyles. In yet a different and starker perspective, some individuals believe that demons can possess our lives at times and create a state of pandemonium within one's being.Commissioned by the Western/Northwestern divisions of the College Band Directors National Association, Roger Cichy's composition Pandemonium attempts to paint a wide array of meanings of the term. At times, the music may suggest catastrophic events that that have turned into pandemonium; other times the music may reflect a more subtle disposition and imply pandemonium on an individual level. Sometimes the music is intended to sound confusing and unsettling or eerie and uncertain. Moments also exist when the music sounds riotous or even martial. During one segment of the piece, Cichy has composed a sort of "march of the demons." In another segment, Cichy refers to it as "the dance of the evil spirits."The interpretation of what one hears is purely up to the listener. This is not meant to be programmatic music, Cichy states. "You are given certain qualities of sound, melody and musical impressions during each segment and you must choose your own definition.".

No Shadow of Turning by David Gillingham. Arranged by Geoffrey Brand. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Bb Trumpet 3, Horn 1/2, Horn 3/4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Ba). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 9:40. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10990). No Shadow of Turning was commissioned by a consortium of organizations at The Ohio State University in memory of Lois Brock, beloved secretary of The Ohio State University Bands. The work is based on the hymn tune Great is Thy Faithfulness, by Thomas O. Chisholm (words) and William M. Runyan (music).Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no Shadow of turning with thee;Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.Refrain:Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!Morning by morning new mercies I see;All I have needed thy hand hath provided;Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto thee.Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,Sun, moon, and stars in their courses aboveJoin with all nature in manifold witnessTo thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.Refrain.Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!Refrain. The title of the work is taken from the second line of the first verse which perhaps sums up the meaning of the hymn and the faith held by Lois Brock. The work also features optional hand bells, as Lois Brock was an avid hand bell player in her local church. The work begins quietly and somewhat mysteriously on a motive using the interval of the falling fourth of the refrain of the hymn. This material grows and gathers texture and then concludes softly on a rolled G major chord in the marimba. A chorale follows, played by the vibraphone and bells and/or the hand bells. I call this chorale the "Lois Brock Chorale" as it exhibits the warmness of her ever-loving spirit. An interlude follows utilizing motives from the hymn and leads to the flute playing the verse of the hymn. Pursuant to this quiet rendition is a rather aggressive section featuring the timpani and percussion that play with the opening motive of the refrain. This leads to a fugue on the same motivic material that grows in intensity and segues with the trombones playing the hymn tune in march-like style against fanfare-like motives in the trumpets. All this subsides and the hymn is now played by the trumpets against the horns playing the Lois Brock Chorale. The full band joins in on the refrain that rises to a glorious pinnacle and then concludes softly by the euphonium. The material from the introduction is then restated and leads to a final statement of the refrain followed by a peaceful and heavenly benediction.

For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in F 3/4, Tromb). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 4:50. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11240). "Northern Light" was commissioned by the Walled Lake Northern High School Bands on the occasion of the first graduating class in June of 2005. The work incorporates the school's "Alma Mater" for which I was commissioned to write the music for several years ago.The work uses a sonata-like design. It begins with a slow introduction beginning in Ab major using material from the Alma Mater and modulates to Bb major. An allegro exposition follows with a fanfare-like first theme (trumpets) that is celebratory in nature. A short transition leads to the second theme (Alma Mater) in Gb Major presented in a slower and more stately tempo. A development section follows which using fugal counterpoint as its centerpiece with the subject based on the first theme. Alternating episodes develop both themes and a retransition leads the work to the recapitulation of the first theme, this time in Ab Major. A transition dramatically leads to the final presentation of theme 2 (Alma Mater) in C Major with its rhythm augmented. A coda appropriately brings the work to a rousing conclusion.--DRG.

Under the Magical Wing by David Gillingham. Arranged by Geoffrey Brand. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Bb Trumpet 3, Horn 1/2, Horn 3/4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Ba). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 4:50. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10200). Under the Magical Wing was commissioned by Sally Sterrett Wagner, Director of Eleanor Roosevelt High School Instrumental Music Department in Greenbelt, Maryland. The commission was a gift to Mrs. Wagner bearing the following inscription:This commission is a gift presented to Sally Sterrett Wagner, Director of the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Instrumental Music Department in Greenbelt, Maryland, from her Band Family, which encompasses current students and two decades of alumni and parents. This music serves as a commemoration symbolizing our collective appreciation of Mrs. Wagner's profound dedication to the ERHS bands.Mrs. Wagner built the ERHS instrumental music program with incomparable care for every one of her students. She has given the Band Family gifts that stretch far beyond high school graduation, gifts we carry with us each and every day. Her love of music, teaching and performing, as well as expectation of responsibility, teamwork and excellence are not only lessons musically, but lessons of life. And during our four years under Sally's wing and direction, somewhere along the way the magic happens, musical magic that envelops the senses and creates lasting memories and relationships.Sally Wagner, you are the indispensable heartbeat of what makes this Band Family special. Thank you for touching our lives and showing us the way to the magic!I noticed in this remarkable dedication to Mrs. Wagner the phrase "under Sally's wing" and the use of the word "magic". Hence, I have titled the piece, "Under the Magical Wing". The concept for the piece was suggested by the current students, parents and alumni: a fanfare and chorale. The fanfare would reflect "celebration and tribute and the chorale would reflect her love of the lyrical and traditional music of the British Isles and of bands that listen and sing and feel the magic."The work begins with a celebratory fanfare, segues into a chorale and ends with material from the fanfare. The second presentation of the chorale, from measure 83 to 118, can be sung by an optional choir or by students within the band by reducing the instrumentation. The words are written by the composer.Join in our song!Join in with harmony,Singing of hope,Kindness and love. Our music will set the world free.Let us all singOf care we receiveAll under the magical wing.Nurture our heartsAnd challenge our minds. And keep us from drifting apart.Follow the dream.Life's hymn we'll always sing. And keep us all underThe magical wing.

Toccata in Dance Rhythm by Robert Palmer. Arranged by G. Brock. Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 6:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10190). Toccata in Dance Rhythm is an exploration of polyrhythm and color in the band/wind ensemble medium. Multiple overlapping layers of sound are employed in a way that is suggestive at times of jazz or African rhythms. A contrasting middle section highlights soloists and the lyrical potential of the ensemble, and leads to a fast and energetic conclusion.

Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 7:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.14000). At a mass meeting in 1954, about 200 citizens representing all sections of Davie County, North Carolina voted unanimously to consolidate the four high schools - Cooleemee, Farmington, Mocksville, and Shady Grove - into one high school, resulting in the forming of Davie County High School in 1956. Through the Horizon was commissioned by the Davie County Band Boosters to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this historic occasion. The piece was premiered on May 31, 2007 by the Davie County High School Band, directed by Marc Schaub. The title of the piece is derived from the title of the poem, "Walking Through the Horizon" by short story writer Margaret Holley. While the horizon is something we can physically never touch or reach, I like the image of walking through it as a symbol of achieving what seemed to be an unattainable goal. Two large sections comprise the 6-minute work. The first, "Reflection," is a solemn and nostalgic look back to the convergence of the four communities. With a backdrop of sparkling mallet percussion and wind chimes, all of the wind players sing a simple four-note motive representing the four schools. Following the singing, fragments of the main "Celebration" theme are first heard in solo flute and trumpet and then by the entire ensemble building to a glorious climax. The second section, "Celebration," is a bright and joyful look at the present state and future possibilities of the school. The main theme is derived from the rhythm of the words "Sing all ye joyful, now sing all together . . . Dance all ye joyful, now dance all together," excerpted from a celebratory poem by J.R.R. Tolkien. All thematic material for the work sprang out of this original theme. Once again, the four schools that came together to form Davie High School are represented, this time by four different incarnations of the "Celebration" theme (see m. 35, 52, 62, and 86).The work keeps driving towards a conclusion, but cannot seem to reach it. Finally, the singing returns, interspersed with powerful blows in the percussion section, and leads into the final chord in E-flat major.

Tune in a Popular London Style by Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961). Arranged by Barry Kopetz. For Concert Band (Piccolo, 1st & 2nd Flute, 1st & 2nd Oboe, English Horn, 1st & 2nd Bassoon, 1st Clarinet in Bb, 2nd Clarinet in Bb, 3rd Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Soprano Saxophone, 1st & 2nd Alto Saxophone in Eb, Tenor Saxophone in Bb, Baritone Saxophone in Eb,). Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 3:15. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10890). Tune in a Popular London Style was "An attempt to write an air with a 'Music Hall' flavor embodying the London blend of gaiety with wistfulness so familiar in the performances of George Grossmith, Jr., and other vaudeville artists. It consists of two strains, like the solo and chorus of music-hall ditties. The musical material, composed in London, dates from about 1912, and was worked out and scored during the winter of 1915/16 in New York City and in railway trains.(Notes derived form "A Source Guide to the Music of Percy Grainger," ed. by Thomas P. Lewis.)While residing in London in 1915, Grainger and his mother made a quick decision to leave London. The Great War had just begun, and Rose Grainger worried about her son's career prospects if they remained in London. They boarded the Cunrad ship Laconia in Liverpool and reached Boston on September 8, 1915. Grainger merged into the musical life of New York City and began performing at the piano, earning him a wide reputation. Sixteen concerts were booked for New York with the leading orchestras, as well as numerous solo recitals. Other performances were scheduled in Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Boston and the Chicago orchestras. In the first season in America, Grainger's works received approximately one hundred performances, though Grainger was only invited to conduct but once. Although the success he was receiving as a pianist was unlike anything he received in Europe, he saw that his success as a performer was in danger of denying him any critical acclaim as a serious composer. As his career began to flourish, the need for increased travel became a necessity. Whenever Grainger traveled, he took the train. He loved railways, as they gave him the space to spread his manuscripts out and compose. He always traveled second class, and rarely took a sleeper, preferring to sleep sitting up. He would occasionally depart the train one station early and give the difference in fare to a local charity. It was partly during these trips on the train that Grainger scored In a Nutshell. In June of 1916, Grainger was invited to take part in the Norfolk, Connecticut Festival of Music. It was for this performance that he scored and put together an orchestral suite which he entitled In a Nutshell. Some of the sketches for the piece went back to 1905, and the suite was eventually published in four movements, the final movement being the well-known "Gum-Suckers March" (originally entitled 'Cornstalks March'). Despite the mood of jollity of the suite, it is serious in intent and contains some of Grainger's most characteristic scoring. The first performance was conducted by Dr. Arthur Mees and Grainger was paid $500 for producing it.(Notes derived from "Percy Grainger" by John Bird).
