(8 Brass) (Level 4) Optional 9 Brass. A beautiful, "floating" samba written for the composer's wife. Ellesamba features a frontline of soprano saxophone, optional flute (Tenor III), and flugelhorn. The piece opens with a lush brass chorale which leads into the relaxed samba feel. The development section of the chart features a saxophone section soli which builds into an exciting ensemble soli. Tenor Saxophone III optimally doubles on flute, but the double is not critical to performance. Trumpets double on flugelhorns.

(Level III) This chart provides the lead alto with a strong melody accompanied by an easy-going samba groove. Aside from the demands placed on the soloist, who has to read changes and maintain the center focus for nearly the entire chart, the rest of the band should find no unusual difficulties. Lead trumpet never exceeds high B, though Harmon mutes and flugelhorns are highly recommended. (Level III) Samba do Mar Composed for and premiered by the 2010 International Trombone Festival Jazz Choir, members ages 20 to 80. A samba in D minor, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir. Everyone gets a piece of the melody at some point. Lead part rises only to G above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. Solo space is provided for the top two chairs; but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an opener or closer. The dominant rhythm in this piece is the authentic Brazilian "partido alto" style.
