Missa Solemnis by Serge Lancen. For Concert Band. Sacred Music / Classical Songs and Oratoria / Latin Songs. Classic Arrangement. Grade 5. Choir Set. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.011964110-CH).
This Mass has been dedicated to His Holyness Pope John Paul II, to witness Lancens deep and respectful admiration for the Holy Father. The work was composed in 1986 and written for two solo voices: a soprano and a baryton-Martin (high baritone), mixed choir, harp (ad libitum) and symphonic band or organ. It has ten parts: INTROIT - KYRIE - GLORIA - OFFERTORIUM - SANCTUS - PATER NOSTER - AGNUS DEI - COMMUNIO - DEO GRATIAS - and as final part an ALLELUIA. Lancen expressed his views about this Mass as follows: 'The most important aspect of the Mass is the praising of God and the sacrificing to God; that is why I thought it suitable to use both the themes of the Sanctus and the Offertorium in writing the Introitus. It seemed to me also quite logical that the initial themes of the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei would be rather similar as these are two moments where the priest and the worshippers invoke God. The composition ends with a brilliant Alleluia in which I also briefly quote the theme of the Sanctus.' This Mass was premiered on 27 may 1989 at 'Our Lady's Church' in Maastricht, The Netherlands, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Roman Catholic Band Federation of the Limburg County. The Bishop Castermans celebrated the Mass, whereas Jan Cober conducted this first performance. The Missa Solemnis is an alternation of meditating, though often impressive, orchestral passages with angelical choral sounds and the pious singing of both soloists. This may not be the type of music we usually expect from Serge Lancen, but nevertheless the composer remains faithful to his own typical style of composition. You can call this work romantic, though it surely is 'contemporary' or, why not, 'from all times'. The instrumentation is varied and extremely rich, mostly due to Lancen's typical use of 'wind band colours'. This Latin Mass suits perfectly well in the tradition of Roman-Catholic Masses that have been written by several great composers.

Blue Tango by L. Anderson. For Fanfare Band. Arrangements of Modern Light Music / Light Pieces / Tango / Novelties. Light Concert Pieces. Grade 3. Score and Parts. Duration 2 minutes, 49 seconds. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.020994040).
Leroy Anderson was the son of Swedish immigrants. He studied music and foreign languages at the famous Harvard University before starting a brilliant musical career. He was a great church organ player, a fine conductor a great composer and mostly the successful arranger for the famous 'Boston Pops Orchestra' conducted by Arthur Fiedler. He turned into one of the very big champions of the musical 'novelty' with hits such as 'Belle of the Ball', 'Bugler's Holiday', 'Sandpaper Ballet', 'The Syncopated Clock' and 'The Typewriter' (all these items have also been published by Molenaar Edition). In was in 1947/48 that Anderson was obsessed by a tune which was to become his world famous 'Blue Tango'. He choose 'tango azul' as title, but this did not sound very commercial. (Usually Anderson first chose a title and then composed a piece, but in this case he did the opposite). The Decca label released this piece on the second Anderson long playing record in october 1951. Unexpectedly Blue Tango became the big success and made its way into the Top ten. Between January and June 1952 one million records with this tune were sold. It was the very first instrumental piece to reach the top of the hit parade: it was number one for seven weeks and remained fifteen weeks in the top of the charts.

Samba Crazy by Terry Kenny. For Fanfare Band. Countries. Real Big Band Sound. Grade 3. Score and Parts. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.022422040).
This is based on the famous tango 'El Choclo' by Angel Villoldo. The tango is the national dance of Argentina, but Terry has turned it into a samba, which is the national dance of Brazil, thereby running the risk of antagonising half the population of South America. The arrangement is lively and up-beat, so we hope they will approve and enjoy it.

Adios Nonino by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992). Arranged by Peter Kleine Schaars. For Fanfare Band. Tango / Arrangements of Modern Light Music. Grade 2. Score and Parts. Duration 5 minutes, 16 seconds. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.022666040).
It was the Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) who was at the origin of the so-called symphonic tango in the forties. Those tangos were performed by large orchestras and thus broke with the tradition of the small 'orquesta tipica' Adius Nonino is a typical example.

Clarinet Samba by Rodney Parker. For Concert Band. Original Works Light Music Repertoire / Little Solo concerts. Real Big Band Sound. Grade 3. Score and Parts. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.012554040).
It's Carnival Time for the Clarinets! Let your whole clarinet section enjoy this rhythmic Samba. The accompaniment does not need to be too heavy so maybe some of the band could play extra Latin American percussion instruments such as Claves, Cabasa and Conga Drums. You may even get some members of the audience to help! The clarinets are written in their best registers and should be the dominant part at all times particularly in the legato section after Bar 20. Have fun!

Salsa Suspention. (Nomenclautura). By Peter Kleine Schaars. For Concert Band. The Best Original Pieces for Concert Band / Original Works Light Music Repertoire. Original Pieces. Grade 3. Score and Parts. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.012568040).
This is the first part of the five-part suite "Nomenclatura" commissioned by the Dutch Customs Band "Douane Harmonie Nederland." Peter Kleine Schaars studied the trombone at the Zwolle Conservatory of Music and composing at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. He is currently trombone player and staff arranger with the Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Marine. This piece could be called a Salsa for Band. It is impossible to establish a date for the development of salsa as a world phenomenon, since the music is itself the result of hybridisation and cultural cross-pollenization over a period of hundred years. African slaves, Spanish seamen, French aristocrats and others came together in the New World, a real cultural melting pot. In Cuba, African rhythms joined with French and Spanish ballroom dances and folk styles. At some point the bubbling improvisations of jazz noodled themselves into the mix and before anyone even realised what was happening, a style of music emerged that would go on to be one of the most influential and far-reaching of the 20th century. Kleine Schaars most skillfully uses the wind band to give a nice demonstration of this rather intricate rhythm. The theme is strolling right through the various instrument groups, whereas the woodwinds complete with a special treat.
