Mambo!!! (2003) for orchestra by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Orchestra. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10584). Instrumentation: 2 flutes, piccolo 2 oboes 2 clarinets in Bb 2 bassoons 2 horns in F 2 trumpets in Bb 2 trombones Percussion I: clave Percussion II: triangle, small cymbal, cow-bells, tom-toms or timbales Piano Violin I Violin II Viola Cello Double bass This is a transposed score. Program notes. It is very interesting that Mambo!!! is now ten years old on the occasion of a performance by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra at the Esplanade on July 31, 2013. I wrote the work for Charles Ansbacher and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra in 2003. Since then Charles performed the work many times with the BLO. When Charles called and told me he wanted me to write a short orchestral work with a Latin American flavor, I told him that would be fabulous since I had written several works in that vein. After all, I lived in São Paulo, Brazil, during my teens. But I still had to do some research. I found a couple of mambo CDs by the inimitable Tito Puente. After a few listening sessions, I got it. So, here we have it: a TOL Mambo!!! Enjoy! About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play! Prelude and Tango by Drake Mabry. For Orchestra. Instructional, Latin, 21st Century. Intermediate. Score. Published by Drake Mabry Productions (S0.10569). Prelude and Tango for orchestra was commissioned in 2008 by the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Troy Peters, director. It was premiered and performed during the orchestra's summer 2009 tour of Quebec and France. The work begins with a slow and mysterious Prelude which features melodic fragments which will later be heard in their entirety during the tango. These are heard over a quiet undulating background tapestry. The Tango (in the Nuevo Tango style invented by Astor Piazzolla) highlights every family of orchestral instruments in a series of diverse variations which culminate in a roof raising ending. All the instrumental families have their spotlight: woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. Video and audio performances of this piece are available on YouTube and at www.myspace.com/drakemabry. Chôros, opus 61 (1994-95) for solo violin by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Violin. Latin, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10465). "Chôros for solo violin is in seven sections. I. Chôro vivo II. Sambinha chorôso III. Valsa lenta IV. Valsa serenata V . Polca-chôro VI. Valsa graciosa VII. Chôro reprise When Daniel Stepner commissioned me to write a work for solo violin, I of course went straight to the Solo Partitas by JS Bach for inspiration. The Brazilian chôro masters - Heitor Villa-Lobos, Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, and Zequinha Abreu - also wrote their wonderful music with ""old Bach"" in mind. Under these two influences I went to work, shamelessly borrowing from both. Formally, the chôro patterns itself after the baroque dance suite. In my work, the movements - chôro vivo, sambinha chorôso, valsa lenta, valsa serenata, polca-chôro, valsa graciosa, and chôro reprise - are, respectively, similar in character to the allemande, courante, sarabande, menuet I, gavotte, menuet II, and gigue. The spirit of the music, however, leans toward the Brazilians rather than Bach. The first two movements are lively sambas, followed by three typical old-fashioned ""sentimental"" waltzes and a polka. Instead of a gigue, the last movement is a repeat, but shorter version, of the first, bringing the whole to a close.". Seven Jazz Pieces (1990-91) for string quartet by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10433). Program note. The work, as indicated by the title, is in seven parts. Formally, the first, third, and last - respectively, the Prelude, Interlude, and Postlude ... all of which are quiet and meditative in mood - are like pillars that hold the whole work together, into place. The inner sections consist of pieces inspired by and in homage to four influential and important jazz artists - a Be-bop theme in the style of Horace Silver, a jazz waltz à la Bill Evans, a bossa nova Antonio Carlos Jobim could've written, and a variation of a Jaco Pastorius punk-funk groove. The whole structure looks like this: I. Prelude: Meditative II. Post-bop: To Horace Silver III. Interlude: Chorale IV. Jazz Waltz: To Bill Evans V. Bossa Nova: To Antonio Carlos Jobim VI. Punk funk: To Jaco ... VII. Postlude: Prayer. About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play! Forró (1998) for chamber orchestra by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Orchestra. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10348). "Program notes. The samba will forever haunt my musical landscape. [I lived in Brazil during the early sixties.] Forró, pronounced ""faw-HOH,"" is a type of samba music from the Brazilian northeast - Paraiba, Pernambuco and Bahia. It is music that has its roots in African, Carribean, and European traditions. It is party music. Legend has it that the word, Forró, came from a bastardization of the English, ""For all!"" As in, ""this is a party for all, for everyone!"" Traditionally, the forró was played by a trio - accordion, triangle and small bass drum. Nowadays, it is often supplemented by modern instruments - woodwinds, brass, keyboards, electric guitar, bass and trap drums. ". Morango ... almost a tango, full score by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9516). "Program note. Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is about to become a teenager on March 16, 1996. Yikes!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived twelve years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at ""Concert X"" by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The ""Red Sneakers String Quartet"" comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the ""doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it."" The original program note read, "" Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted."" Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, ""Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee."" Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, "" ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee."" Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, ""White Man Sleeps."" Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, ""Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams."" Thomas Oboe Lee Cambridge, Massachusetts December 16, 1995 ". About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play!
