The Modal House Of Hip Hop by Steve Wiest. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to Ab6. Fusion, Modal Changes, Jazz. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1606). (8 Brass) (Level 4) Commissioned by Curt Hanrahan for the greater Milwaukee Youth Jazz Ensemble, this piece is written in a fusion style that combines straight ahead figures with a 1990's "hip hop" or "rap" groove in a similar style to the Brecker Brothers' recording, The Return of the Brecker Brothers. The main theme is stated by mixed choirs of saxophones and trumpets followed by a trumpet statement of the theme with a screaming lead guitar/saxophone counterline. After a bridge section the entire ensemble has a moment of improvisation over a specific group of notes. The solo section is open for any instrument (solo changes provided in all transpositions). The changes are in a modal style. After a soli/shout section, the piece ends with a surprise reprise of the introduction.

You Shouldn't Have by Christopher Jentsch. For jazz ensemble (tenor trombone feature). This edition: Trumpet range to Eb6. Jazz Standard, Ballad, Jazz. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1727). (8 Brass) This is a tenor trombone feature in a jazz standard ballad style (AABA form, key of F). The approach is lyrical and fresh. Instead of an open solo section, the improvisation is woven into a simple through-composed 2 1/2-chorus structure. Originally the tune was improvised by the composer at a solo gig. No doubles. The Place That Never Leaves You by Christopher Jentsch. For jazz ensemble (piano solo; optional flutes I-IV and/or vibraphone). This edition: Trumpet range to Db6. Jazz Waltz. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1728). (8 Brass) This arrangement is based on an original composition in the style of pianist Bill Evans. Appropriately it features piano although changes have been provided for other potential soloists (alto, tenor, trumpet, guitar or bass). Because it is sharp leaning throughout, this arrangement could serve as an etude on that issue for an average college band. The improviser might be challenged by a chord progression somewhat hard for this level. The harmonic language consists of standard Evans jazz chords, but there are lots of them and several sharp leaning key changes to negotiate. No doubles. Optional Flutes I-IV and/or Vibraphone. Premiered by the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble. Later recorded by the University of Miami's Concert Jazz Band on Jentsch's Miami Suite CD.
