Beautiful Love by Chuck Owen. For jazz ensemble (5, 4, 4, piano, bass, guitar, drums, optional percussion, optional solo alto saxophone). This edition: Trumpet range to F#6. Straight 8th, ECM, Jazz. Chuck Owen Series. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1041). (Level IV) Commissioned originally by the U.S. Air Force Reserve Jazz Ensemble and recorded by the Jazz Surge on their CD, Madcap, Owen has given this lovely standard an evocatively sensual portrayal. After allowing woodwinds and muted brass to establish the ECMish groove, Alto Sax and Trombone lazily unveil the head and are later featured in extended solos (Bass also has a solo). The piece settles into a groove that is probably best described as a slow rhumba and climaxes with a stirring, brassy statement of the melody. Woodwind doubles including an Alto Flute (gasp!) part. 5,4,4, PBGD, opt. Perc, Opt. Solo Alto. 8 Brass.

Hidden Agenda by Eric Richards. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Rhumba-style, Funk, Jazz. Eric Richards Series. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1107). (8 Brass) (Level 4) Optional Trumpet 5 (Music for an imaginary espionage film set in Central or South America...) This new "world music" piece was inspired by the music of Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzolla. It opens with a rhumba-style synth accordion figure, which layers above a half-time funk groove. Mojo Blues by Eric Richards. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to Eb6. Blues, Half-Time feel, Funk, Jazz, Modern. Eric Richards Series. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1109). (9 Brass) (Level 4) This chart is a blues, but one firmly rooted in the nineties. The range demands are not too difficult for the brass, but some of the rhythmic figures and the overall concept of the feel make this chart somewhat challenging. The feel should have a hint of half time funk, but the electric bass should be walking in 4 for most of the time. This kind of groove is used quite a bit by the Yellowjackets. The open solo section can feature trumpet, alto, guitar, or keyboard (ideally synthesizer). No doubles (soprano sax lead).

Say What?! by Eric Richards. For jazz ensemble (alto saxophone and synthesizer solos). This edition: Trumpet range to Eb6. Funk, Jazz. Eric Richards Series. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1111). (9 Brass) (Level 5) This funk composition is a setting of an imaginary collaboration between Bela Bartok and James Brown! Say What?! is ideal for mature bands and festival appearances. Distorted guitar and saxophone state the somewhat "tonally ambiguous" theme supported by a "raw" funk groove in the rhythm section. This notion of setting "outside" melodic material in contrast with, and sometimes supported by, a strong, earthy funk groove is the "plot" of this piece. Solos are featured in Alto saxophone II and Synthesizer. No doubles.
