Cheesehead by Dave Glenn. Arranged by Kerry Marsh. For jazz choir (SSAATTBB choir with rhythm section). This edition: Rhythm Parts Written Out. Contemporary, Swing, Up Tempo, Medium, Jazz. Kerry Marsh Series. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ772). An arrangement of the Dave Glenn composition, played by the Little Big Band on the album Journeys. A contemporary and forward-looking approach to arranging for vocal jazz ensemble, this chart is laid out into two choirs and a rhythm section. The first choir sings mostly the melodic material and the second choir functions mostly as the background. The feel is an up-tempo, New York-style swing and functions very well in a program as an opener. Solo space with backgrounds. SSAATTBB with rhythm section.

Body and Soul arranged by Kerry Marsh. For jazz choir (SATB choir with rhythm section). This edition: Rhythm Parts Written Out. Jazz, Ballad. Kerry Marsh Series. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ773). (Level IV) An arrangement of the standard ballad but with an up-tempo and slightly darker harmonic approach. This one is quite singable but it contains a few spots of dissonant and surprising harmony that are exciting and refreshing to the listener. Almost all of the chords in the harmonic progression are substitutes for the original changes providing a brand new sonoric perspective on an old favorite. The solos are another surprise as they are not over a new set of changes that actually serve to transition into the head-out. A great ending makes this a winning closer! SATB w/ rhythm section.

Journeys by Dave Glenn. Arranged by Kerry Marsh. For jazz choir (SATBaB choir with rhythm section). This edition: Rhythm Parts Written Out. Jazz, Straight 8th, Contemporary, ECM, Medium, Up Tempo. Kerry Marsh Series. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ777). Another Dave Glenn composition for his "Little Big Band," arranged by Marsh for voices. This chart is performed on wordless vocal, and is in a medium-up tempo, straight-eighth note, contemporary feel. Backgrounds underneath the solo give support in a building contour, releasing the tension just before the head comes back in. A nice tough by Glenn employed as well by the arranger. SATBaB with rhythm section.

Shout Blues by Kerry Marsh. For jazz choir (SSATBB choir with rhythm section). This edition: Rhythm Parts Written Out. Jazz, Swing, Slow, Blues. Kerry Marsh Series. Level 3. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ778). Based on a concept from the John Clayton Big Band, this blues chart is all shout sections, with solo choruses in between. A great teaching tool for the blues, of course, and some pretty aggressive harmonies. This one swings slow and hard, and needs first sopranos that can wail on a few A's above the staff. Works well as a different kind of opener to a show. SSATBB with rhythm section.

Sunday arranged by Bob Martin. For jazz choir (TTBB choir, a cappella). Swing. Level 3. Set of 5 octavos. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ789). Over the Rainbow arranged by Yumiko Matsuoka. For jazz choir (SATBB choir, a cappella). Jazz, Rock. Level 3. Set of 16 octavos. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ798). Written for a cappella quintet Vox One, this arrangement features a soprano solo (and a short tenor solo in the middle) in a soaring 6/8 feel. There is much room for soloists to freely phrase the melody; behind them, each part weaves the rhythm and lush harmony with lines that let everyone shine at different places. Scarborough Fair arranged by Yumiko Matsuoka. For jazz choir (SSAATTBB choir, a cappella). Ballad, Jazz, Folk. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ799). Jingle Bells by Rick Bell. For jazz choir (SATB choir with rhythm section). Christmas, Swing, Medium. Level 2. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ81). Oh what fun it is! Opening with a bright Killer Joe-type groove in the rhythm section, this swinging vocal mixes unisons, thirds and full harmonies in a hip but very singable fashion with just enough rhythmic and harmonic surprises to keep things interesting. The middle section reprises the opening vamp as a background for light-hearted vocal quotes and an instrumental solo. The solo concludes with background vocals entering and building to a climax. The voices then return to the verse, leading to a dramatic vocal segue into a half-time rock groove with a tasty vocal tag and ending. A fun chart and a cheerful earful for the season!
