Morango ... almost a tango, full score by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9516). "Program note. Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is about to become a teenager on March 16, 1996. Yikes!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived twelve years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at ""Concert X"" by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The ""Red Sneakers String Quartet"" comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the ""doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it."" The original program note read, "" Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted."" Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, ""Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee."" Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, "" ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee."" Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, ""White Man Sleeps."" Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, ""Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams."" Thomas Oboe Lee Cambridge, Massachusetts December 16, 1995 ". About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play! Vincent Millay Cycle (2010) for soprano and piano by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Piano, Voice. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9564). Program note: Mary Hubbell was a student of mine at Boston College, a graduate of 1997. Mary had an active performing career at BC in theater and in music. After graduation she worked in the administrative offices of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Eventually she decided to take the next step in her singing career: she applied to graduate school. After completing her Master’s at University of California at Santa Barbara, she went to Holland to study at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague. She did a lot of contemporary music in the Netherlands, including opportunities to work with Louis Andriessen and Steve Reich. After four years in Europe she came back to the States, returning to her hometown in Charleston, SC. She had an active studio teaching voice and was quite content. I told her she should not get too settled into her comfortable Southern life, that she should move to New York City. She did and is now finishing her DMA in vocal performance at CUNY Graduate Center. When she told me she was planning a recital for her doctorate degree, I offered to write her a song cycle. Mary was thrilled. We had email exchanges about what text or poems to choose for the cycle. After dropping a few names, we decided on Edna St. Vincent Millay. For my research I read two biographies of the poet, one by Nancy Milford and the other by Daniel Epstein. The readings helped me decide on the six poems I chose from the mind-boggling amount of material Miss Millay had amassed from childhood until her death in 1950. Corso's Marriage (2011) for baritone and piano by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Piano, Voice. Broadway, Opera, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9566). Program note: In the spring of 2010, I had a work premiered in Weill Recital Hall by pianist Mana Tokuno. After the concert we all retired to a restaurant across the street from Carnegie Hall, called Trattoria dell’Arte, for dinner. Our waiter noticed that we had programs from Carnegie Hall and asked us what we saw. We told him about Mana’s debut concert in New York City and that she performed a work I wrote for her. Our waiter said, “Splendid! My name is Tim Krol. Here’s my card. I’m a baritone and was a member of Chanticleer when I lived on the West Coast.” When I got home I visited Tim’s website and was very impressed with his voice, his singing, and especially his diction. I had a concert at Boston College in the spring of 2011, and I needed a baritone to sing my Oscar Wilde Letter to Bosie, “De Profundis.” He and his accompanist, Holly Chatham, came up to Boston and did a fabulous job on the work. During the very same summer I accidentally stumbled upon a poem by Gregory Corso called “Marriage.” I loved the sardonic way Corso imagined the institute of matrimony. The poem is so funny and amusing that I decided it would make a great song cycle for baritone and piano. And of course, I wanted Tim to premiere it. *Poem reprinted by permission of New Directions Publishing Corp. Fantasia for Solo Organ (2001) by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Organ. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9892). "Program note: Carson P. Cooman, a sophomore at Harvard College, is a composer who plays the organ. I was very surprised when he e-mailed me asking what my commission fee is for a solo organ work. I gave him a price and he said, ""Fine. Write me a five-minute piece."" I later looked at his web site at www. carsoncooman.com and noticed that he has commissioned solo organ works from twenty-plus composers. He is also a very prolific composer in his own right, producing some twenty works in 2001 alone. This is the second work for solo organ in my portfolio. The first, ""Toccata, Adagio & Fugue,"" written for organist James David Christie, was finished only a couple of weeks ago. I felt very energized by that work, so I jumped right into the next, my ""Fantasia."" J.S. Bach's ""Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major, BWV 564"" had a direct influence on my ""TAF."" Likewise, Bach's ""Fantasia in G Major, BWV 572"" was the inspiration for my own ""Fantasia."" Both Bach and I begin with a series of rapid sextuplet arpeggiations, followed by a chorale-like section. In Bach's case, the rapid figurations return for a conclusive ending resulting in a simple A-B-A form. In my case, the ""chorale"" returns a second time before a final recapitulation of the arpeggiations, and ends in a decisive F major; a symmetrical A-B-A-B-A structure. ". Toccata, Adagio & Fugue (2001) for solo organ by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Organ. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.9903). "Program note: My boss, T. Frank Kennedy, S.J., is a frequent visitor to Nantucket. So when he invited my wife, Kris, and me for a visit last summer we jumped at the chance. We were there for three days. We ate, we drank, we went all over the island. It was a beautiful place to visit. We stayed at the Parish House and had the pleasure of meeting the parish priest, Rev. Paul Caron. I soon found out that his church, Saint Mary's Church, was about to receive a brand new organ commissioned from the organ builder, Michael Bigelow, of Salt Lake City, and that James David Christie had been invited to give an inaugural concert to celebrate the new instrument. I suggested that I would be very interested in writing a new work for the occasion. Father Caron agreed to commission me. In my search for inspiration I went straight to J.S. Bach. I recently purchased a boxed set of 17 CD's of works for solo organ by Bach, and I was immediately attracted to his ""Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major, BWV 564."" So I decided to write my very own ""TAF."" There isn't much to say about mine. The first movement is toccata-like. The second movement is slow ... like an adagio. And the third is a fugue, as prescribed by the doctor. If there were any divergence between my TAF and Bach's, I would say it is in the higher degree of chromaticism in my work. Otherwise, the piece pays homage to ""old Bach,"" the superior artist. ". About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Septem Verba Christi in Cruce (2008) for SATB a cappella chorus by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Choral. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10004). Program note: A former student of mine at Boston College contacted me this summer and asked if I would be interested in writing a choral work for her group in the Berkshires. I was at the time completing the orchestration of my Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, and so was ready to do something new and different from a purely instrumental work. Having been raised a Catholic and educated at parochial schools when I was a child in Hong Kong, and also bearing in mind the fact that I now teach at a Jesuit institution, Boston College, the idea of the passion of Christ is always in the back of my mind. As a matter of fact, I have always found religious choral music to be the ideal and most transcendent way to communicate God’s words. The Seven Last Words of Christ has been done in a musical setting most famously by Franz Joseph Haydn in a wordless string quartet. Other settings include those by Heinrich Schütz, César Franck, Sofia Gubaidulina, and James McMillan. Portion of the text could also be found in the sublime St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach and Passio by the contemporary Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt. The complete text in Latin of Septem Verba Christi in Cruce follows. 1. Pater, dimitte illis, quia nesciunt, quid faciunt. (Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.) 2. Hodie mecum eris in Paradiso. (This day thou shalt be with me in Paradise.) 3. Mulier, ecce filius tuus. (Woman, behold thy son.) 4. Deus meus, Deus meus, utquid dereliquisti me? (My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?) 5. Sitio. (I thirst.) 6. Consummatum est. (It is finished.) 7. In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. (Into thine hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.) This work is dedicated to my mother. About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. "Program notes. The samba will forever haunt my musical landscape. [I lived in Brazil during the early sixties.] Forró, pronounced ""faw-HOH,"" is a type of samba music from the Brazilian northeast - Paraiba, Pernambuco and Bahia. It is music that has its roots in African, Carribean, and European traditions. It is party music. Legend has it that the word, Forró, came from a bastardization of the English, ""For all!"" As in, ""this is a party for all, for everyone!"" Traditionally, the forró was played by a trio - accordion, triangle and small bass drum. Nowadays, it is often supplemented by modern instruments - woodwinds, brass, keyboards, electric guitar, bass and trap drums. ". The New England Transcendentalists (2002) for string quartet by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10392). Program note. I met the Hawthorne String Quartet in 1997 when Jim Christie and the New England Composers Recording Project brought us together to record four of my string quartets for Koch International Classics. Since then Mark Ludwig, violist and founder of the Quartet, has commissioned me to write several works for the Quartet, Musicworks, and the Terezin Chamber Music Foundation. In the fall of 2002 I decided to return the favor with a gift of a new quartet for Mark and his colleagues, Ronan Lefkowitz, Haldan Martinson and Sato Knudsen. The name “Hawthorne” immediately brought to mind Charles Ives’ Second Piano Sonata, also known as the “Concord Sonata,“ in which Ives composed a separate movement for each of the four Transcendentalist writers from Concord, Massachusetts: Emerson, Hawthorne, Alcott and Thoreau. I thought I would do the same for the string quartet. In 1920, Charles Ives published a book, “Essays before a Sonata,” which is actually a long set of program notes for the Concord Sonata. In my reading of the Emerson chapter, I came upon the following: “ … a Gospel hymn of simple devotion came to him---“There’s a wideness in God’s mercy”---an instant suggestion of that Memorial Day morning comes---but the moment is of deeper import---there is no personal exultation---no intimate world vision---no magnified personal hope---and in their place a profound sense of a spiritual truth---a sin within reach of forgiveness. And as the hymn voices die away, there lies at his feet---not the world, but the figure of the Saviour---he sees an unfathomable courage---an immortality for the lowest---the vastness in humility, the kindness of the human heart, man’s noblest strength---and he knows that God is nothing---nothing, but love!” I also came upon an anecdote in Ives’ “114 Songs” of a conversation between Ralph Waldo Emerson and Oliver Wendell Holmes. “The latter said that many of the hymns in use were mere pieces of cabinet work. Then his voice deepened and his eyes shone, as they did in his noblest moments, and he said, “One hymn I think supreme.” Emerson threw back his head and waited while Dr Holmes repeated the text of the following song. ‘Thou hidden love of God, whose height, whose depth, unfathomed, no man knows …’ Emerson responded, “I know that is the supreme hymn. ‘I shall be satisfied when I awake in Thy likeness.’” It took me a while, but eventually I did find Emerson’s hymn with that line; the last line is from Psalm 17. The hymn, composed by Frederic F, Bullard, 1864-1904, with texts by Longfellow, is entitled, “Lord, Hear the Right.”. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10397). """Pastorale"" was commissioned by Bill and Nancy Burdine for the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra in memory of their daughter Carol Anne. Carol, I was told, loved the sound of the harp. So the work opens with a harp soliloquy, which is immediately answered by a woodwind choir. This dialogue continues for a while until eventually the harp and the entire orchestra are both dancing to an imaginary waltz. The music is happy, carefree and sweet ... When Max suggested a second performance of the work in 2012, I decided to revisit the work, twelve years later. I made some major revisions … not unlike the idea of renovating an old kitchen and bathroom. Now we can move back into the house again and enjoy it in its new disguise. ". Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10433). Program note. The work, as indicated by the title, is in seven parts. Formally, the first, third, and last - respectively, the Prelude, Interlude, and Postlude ... all of which are quiet and meditative in mood - are like pillars that hold the whole work together, into place. The inner sections consist of pieces inspired by and in homage to four influential and important jazz artists - a Be-bop theme in the style of Horace Silver, a jazz waltz à la Bill Evans, a bossa nova Antonio Carlos Jobim could've written, and a variation of a Jaco Pastorius punk-funk groove. The whole structure looks like this: I. Prelude: Meditative II. Post-bop: To Horace Silver III. Interlude: Chorale IV. Jazz Waltz: To Bill Evans V. Bossa Nova: To Antonio Carlos Jobim VI. Punk funk: To Jaco ... VII. Postlude: Prayer. About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play! String Quartet on B-flat (1989-90, rev. 1993) by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10435). "Program notes: String Quartet on B-flat was originally commissioned by the Harvard Musical Association for the Manhattan String Quartet. I was not completely happy with that version. In this newly revised version I fixed a troublesome transition just before the triple meter ""stomp"" in the first movement and I cut out a whole section in the second movement. The final outcome is, structurally and musically speaking, tighter, smoother and more coherent than the original. The work is in four movements. Each movement either ""sits"" on B-flat as its tonal center or it incorporates it prominently in the melody. The first movement begins with a bold theme around B-flat. After an initial surge, a second theme appears in a chorale-like setting, ending with a viola solioquy. The music then accelerates into a triple-meter stomp. It ends hinting at the ""waltz-like"" melody first heard in the second theme. The second movement is a ""funky"" scherzo! A parody of discofunkadelics!! Imagine a ""far-out"" string quartet backing up James Brown!!! The third movement, ""Lamentoso ... mazurka-like, ""is indeed a lament. The music sighs in falling gestures similar to those penned by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - father of the Empfindsamer Stil or ""sentimental"" style of the mid-18th century. In the final movement, the B-flat pedal holds court in the upper strings while the viola and cello ""comment. ""Eventually, the pedal rises step-by-step all the way to an F-sharp. This note eventually ""resolves"" down a fifth to B-natural, thus ending the movement one half-step higher than before. Of course, this is not all there is to the movement. Along the way, music heard in the previous movements return as afterthoughts, memories and dreams ... Waltzes, opus 101 (2002) for flute and harp by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Flute, Harp. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10482). Program note When Bart Feller asked me to write a work for flute and harp, I immediately came up with the idea of doing a piece made up of waltzes. Why waltzes? Why not? I have been an enthusiastic adult ballet student since the summer of 1988. Dancing to live music, especially the waltz, has been a joy. This hobby of mine has inevitably drawn me to the history of ballet. Some years ago, I wrote a duo, “Dark Angels,” for viola and cello. Apropos of my interest in dance and music, I matched each movement with a danseur of international renown: Nijinsky, Nureyev & Baryshnikov. For this flute and harp work---more delicate and lyrical in its instrumentation---I have decided to bring back from history the four Romantic ballerinas featured in the infamous “Pas de quatre” divertissement choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1845 and presented at Her Majesty’s Theater in London: Marie Taglioni, Fanny Cerrito, Carlotta Grisi and Lucile Grahn. According to ballet lore, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were in attendance at the premiere. In Waltzes, opus 101, each ballerina is paired with a movement, or “waltz.” The quotation marks indicate that some of these waltzes are pseudo-types---distant relations to the genre. Nevertheless, the triple meter is a dominant feature. The first waltz, “Dream Landscape,” is Marie Taglioni---the original La Sylphide---who was known for her ethereality. The second movement, “Waltzin,’” is Fanny Cerrito, who danced with flair, bravura and abandon. The third waltz, “Lullaby,” is Carlotta Grisi, the original Giselle, who “danced with a perfection, a lightness, a boldness, a chaste and refined seductiveness … ” The last waltz is Lucile Grahn, a proponent of the Bournonville school, who was admired for her “natural grace, elevation, suppleness, energy, technical virtuosity and strong mime.”. Part The First ... THOU Mastering Me God! (2010) for soprano and piano by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Piano, Voice. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10503). Program note: Two thousand ten marks my 20th year of teaching music at Boston College, a Jesuit institute of higher learning. To celebrate this milestone I decided to set a poem by the great British Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins. In my search for a text I came upon his monumental work, “The Wreck of the Deutschland.” The poem is in two parts. Part The First deals with faith and God. Part The Second concerns the five Franciscan nuns who perished in the sinking of the ship. I decided to set Part The First only, for soprano and piano. There are ten stanzas. Each stanza has its own musical texture and mood. 1. THOU mastering me God! 2. I did say yes 3. The frown on his face 4. I am soft sift 5. I kiss my hand 6. Not out of his bliss 7. It dates from day 8. Is out with it! 9. Be adored among men 10. With an anvil ding For Megan Stapleton ...
