ART: arias & interludes (1996) for string quartet by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10585). "PROGRAM NOTE. This work, ART: arias & interludes (1996), commissioned by the Artaria Quartet of Boston, is in five movements with connecting ""solo"" interludes featuring each member of the Quartet. Each movement attempts to evoke the personality of a stock character from the Italian commedia dell'arte all'improviso. [Curtain.] The insufferable Pulcinella is musically represented by a mad polka in the first movement. According to Stravinsky, the Pulcinella he saw, which inspired his Pergolesi-kleptomania, was ""a drunken lout whose every gesture was obscene."" The teary, sad sack Pierrot is portrayed in the Largo of the second movement. Musically, it is a lament/meditation on the tension between the major and the minor triad. Harlequin is irrepressible in his hyperactive antics in the third and quasi-scherzo middle movement. He actually tries, through pantomime, to make us believe that he can fly. And he succeeds in the end only to find himself stuck up there on the ceiling!!! The ballerina Colombine dances a delirious waltz in the fourth. Dizzy from triple and quadruple pirouettes, sometimes lop-sided and almost out-of-control, she finally sits down ... In the fifth and final movement, the old goat Pantaloon shuffles across the stage in his Turkish slippers dancing to a Latin-disco beat, and drifts off into the sunset. [Curtain.] ". Mambo!!! (2003) for orchestra by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Orchestra. Jazz, Latin, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10584). Instrumentation: 2 flutes, piccolo 2 oboes 2 clarinets in Bb 2 bassoons 2 horns in F 2 trumpets in Bb 2 trombones Percussion I: clave Percussion II: triangle, small cymbal, cow-bells, tom-toms or timbales Piano Violin I Violin II Viola Cello Double bass This is a transposed score. Program notes. It is very interesting that Mambo!!! is now ten years old on the occasion of a performance by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra at the Esplanade on July 31, 2013. I wrote the work for Charles Ansbacher and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra in 2003. Since then Charles performed the work many times with the BLO. When Charles called and told me he wanted me to write a short orchestral work with a Latin American flavor, I told him that would be fabulous since I had written several works in that vein. After all, I lived in São Paulo, Brazil, during my teens. But I still had to do some research. I found a couple of mambo CDs by the inimitable Tito Puente. After a few listening sessions, I got it. So, here we have it: a TOL Mambo!!! Enjoy! About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere. Just purchase, print and play! Pluto ... Lord of the Underworld (2005) for orchestra by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Orchestra. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10580). Instrumentation: 3 flutes, piccolo 2 oboes English horn in F 2 clarinets in Bb Bass clarinet in Bb 3 bassoons 4 French horns in F 3 trumpets in Bb 3 trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion I: Xylophone, triangle Percussion II: Tom-toms, bass drum Celesta Harp Violin I Violin II Viola Cello Double bass This is a transposed score. Program Notes: When Charles Ansbacher, music director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, commissioned me to write “Pluto” as a grand finale for “The Planets” by Gustav Holst, I immediately thought of Pluto, the Disney character; but common sense took over when I sat down to work. So instead of Disney’s faithful dog, I gravitated to the Pluto of Roman mythology. After a long battle with the Titans, the three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Pluto, divided the world among themselves. Zeus had the sky; Poseidon, the sea; and Pluto, the Underworld. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead, whether good or bad, enter the Underworld. Cerberus, a vicious three-headed beast, stands guard at the entrance - preventing the living from entering the world of the dead. The movement begins with a fanfare: Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld. Then a grand waltz materializes in the bass: Pluto dances!! As the waltz fades away, a lyrical tune emerges: Persephone, the wife of Pluto, appears. The work ends with a reprise of the opening fanfare, slightly altered. Prelude and Tango by Drake Mabry. For Orchestra. Instructional, Latin, 21st Century. Intermediate. Score. Published by Drake Mabry Productions (S0.10569). Prelude and Tango for orchestra was commissioned in 2008 by the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Troy Peters, director. It was premiered and performed during the orchestra's summer 2009 tour of Quebec and France. The work begins with a slow and mysterious Prelude which features melodic fragments which will later be heard in their entirety during the tango. These are heard over a quiet undulating background tapestry. The Tango (in the Nuevo Tango style invented by Astor Piazzolla) highlights every family of orchestral instruments in a series of diverse variations which culminate in a roof raising ending. All the instrumental families have their spotlight: woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. Video and audio performances of this piece are available on YouTube and at www.myspace.com/drakemabry. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10503). Program note: Two thousand ten marks my 20th year of teaching music at Boston College, a Jesuit institute of higher learning. To celebrate this milestone I decided to set a poem by the great British Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins. In my search for a text I came upon his monumental work, “The Wreck of the Deutschland.” The poem is in two parts. Part The First deals with faith and God. Part The Second concerns the five Franciscan nuns who perished in the sinking of the ship. I decided to set Part The First only, for soprano and piano. There are ten stanzas. Each stanza has its own musical texture and mood. 1. THOU mastering me God! 2. I did say yes 3. The frown on his face 4. I am soft sift 5. I kiss my hand 6. Not out of his bliss 7. It dates from day 8. Is out with it! 9. Be adored among men 10. With an anvil ding For Megan Stapleton ... Waltzes, opus 101 (2002) for flute and harp by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Flute, Harp. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10482). Program note When Bart Feller asked me to write a work for flute and harp, I immediately came up with the idea of doing a piece made up of waltzes. Why waltzes? Why not? I have been an enthusiastic adult ballet student since the summer of 1988. Dancing to live music, especially the waltz, has been a joy. This hobby of mine has inevitably drawn me to the history of ballet. Some years ago, I wrote a duo, “Dark Angels,” for viola and cello. Apropos of my interest in dance and music, I matched each movement with a danseur of international renown: Nijinsky, Nureyev & Baryshnikov. For this flute and harp work---more delicate and lyrical in its instrumentation---I have decided to bring back from history the four Romantic ballerinas featured in the infamous “Pas de quatre” divertissement choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1845 and presented at Her Majesty’s Theater in London: Marie Taglioni, Fanny Cerrito, Carlotta Grisi and Lucile Grahn. According to ballet lore, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were in attendance at the premiere. In Waltzes, opus 101, each ballerina is paired with a movement, or “waltz.” The quotation marks indicate that some of these waltzes are pseudo-types---distant relations to the genre. Nevertheless, the triple meter is a dominant feature. The first waltz, “Dream Landscape,” is Marie Taglioni---the original La Sylphide---who was known for her ethereality. The second movement, “Waltzin,’” is Fanny Cerrito, who danced with flair, bravura and abandon. The third waltz, “Lullaby,” is Carlotta Grisi, the original Giselle, who “danced with a perfection, a lightness, a boldness, a chaste and refined seductiveness … ” The last waltz is Lucile Grahn, a proponent of the Bournonville school, who was admired for her “natural grace, elevation, suppleness, energy, technical virtuosity and strong mime.”. Chôros, opus 61 (1994-95) for solo violin by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Violin. Latin, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10465). "Chôros for solo violin is in seven sections. I. Chôro vivo II. Sambinha chorôso III. Valsa lenta IV. Valsa serenata V . Polca-chôro VI. Valsa graciosa VII. Chôro reprise When Daniel Stepner commissioned me to write a work for solo violin, I of course went straight to the Solo Partitas by JS Bach for inspiration. The Brazilian chôro masters - Heitor Villa-Lobos, Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, and Zequinha Abreu - also wrote their wonderful music with ""old Bach"" in mind. Under these two influences I went to work, shamelessly borrowing from both. Formally, the chôro patterns itself after the baroque dance suite. In my work, the movements - chôro vivo, sambinha chorôso, valsa lenta, valsa serenata, polca-chôro, valsa graciosa, and chôro reprise - are, respectively, similar in character to the allemande, courante, sarabande, menuet I, gavotte, menuet II, and gigue. The spirit of the music, however, leans toward the Brazilians rather than Bach. The first two movements are lively sambas, followed by three typical old-fashioned ""sentimental"" waltzes and a polka. Instead of a gigue, the last movement is a repeat, but shorter version, of the first, bringing the whole to a close.". String Quartet on B-flat (1989-90, rev. 1993) by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10435). "Program notes: String Quartet on B-flat was originally commissioned by the Harvard Musical Association for the Manhattan String Quartet. I was not completely happy with that version. In this newly revised version I fixed a troublesome transition just before the triple meter ""stomp"" in the first movement and I cut out a whole section in the second movement. The final outcome is, structurally and musically speaking, tighter, smoother and more coherent than the original. The work is in four movements. Each movement either ""sits"" on B-flat as its tonal center or it incorporates it prominently in the melody. The first movement begins with a bold theme around B-flat. After an initial surge, a second theme appears in a chorale-like setting, ending with a viola solioquy. The music then accelerates into a triple-meter stomp. It ends hinting at the ""waltz-like"" melody first heard in the second theme. The second movement is a ""funky"" scherzo! A parody of discofunkadelics!! Imagine a ""far-out"" string quartet backing up James Brown!!! The third movement, ""Lamentoso ... mazurka-like, ""is indeed a lament. The music sighs in falling gestures similar to those penned by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - father of the Empfindsamer Stil or ""sentimental"" style of the mid-18th century. In the final movement, the B-flat pedal holds court in the upper strings while the viola and cello ""comment. ""Eventually, the pedal rises step-by-step all the way to an F-sharp. This note eventually ""resolves"" down a fifth to B-natural, thus ending the movement one half-step higher than before. Of course, this is not all there is to the movement. Along the way, music heard in the previous movements return as afterthoughts, memories and dreams ... Premiere performance by the Manhattan String Quartet at the Harvard Musical Association in Beacon Hill, Massachusetts, April 20, 1990 Premiere performance of revised version by the Artaria Quartet of Boston at Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, November 16, 1993 Subsequent performances were given by the Lydian String Quartet in Slosberg Hall, Brandeis University, January 29, 1994, and the Dance Theater Workshop in New York City, March 7, 1994; by the Artaria Quartet of Boston at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, April 22 & 25, 1994, and at Viterbo College in La Crosse, Wisconsin, May 3rd, 1994".
