Published by Baton Music (BF.BM147-SET). Dmitri Shostakovich' opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District was with more than 200 performances very succesful in as well Russia as abroad. But in 1936 Stalin attended a performance and it was immediately condemned in an editorial in Pravda. The opera only reappeared, sanitised as Katerina Ismailova, long after Stalin's death, in 1962. The Suite from Katerina Ismailova consists of the entr'actes linking some of the scenes: these orchestral passages contribute to the dramatic momentum, giving an almost ciematic quality to the work's flow and develops in an symphonic character.

Ottorino Ottorino Respighi (1879 - 1936) had already begun to attract international attention for his orchestral tone poem Fontane di Roma (Fountains of Rome) (1917) when he wrote his Ballata della Gnomidi, a grotesque orchestral work that was destined to remain virtually unknown. This transcription of the symphonic poem, made by Jose Schyns, became one of the highlights at the Kerkrade WMC in 2005.

This is a very special work, written as it is for brass quintet (trumpets I and II, horn, trombone, bass-tuba) and symphonic band, but also available in a version for brass quintet only, which enlarges the practical possibilities for performance enormously. Lancen has certainly exceeded himself in this brilliant work. Following its premiere during the W.A.S.B.E. Congress in Boston in 1987, the 'Boston Globe' wrote: 'Far simpler but its own way more original was the 'Maskerade for Brass Quintet and Band' by Serge Lancen. Its eight movements are unabashedly tonal, throughout a cheerful carnival of simple, sincere ideas worked out with skill and good humor'. The premiere was given by the Dutch National Youth Symphonic Band conducted by Jan Cober.

Symphonie de Paris by Serge Lancen. For Concert Band. The Best Original Pieces for Concert Band / City / Original Pieces. Original Pieces. Grade 6. Score and Parts. This composition, written in 1973, was commissioned by the French Ministry of Cultural Affairs and is dedicated to Desire Dondeyne who premiered it with the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix at the Paris Palais des Congres on 27 February 1975. The piece was recorded in 1994 by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de la Police Nationale (National Police Band) conducted by Pierre Bigot. Serge Lancen included the following text with the score: "The Symphonie de Paris is a musical walk through the capital. Once the visitor has arrived, the composition evokes successively: the familiar cheerfulness of the popular quarters, the hustle and bustle of the great boulevards, the mysterious elegance of the Champs Elysees, the poetic charm of the banks of the river Seine, the impressive Notre-Dame cathedral looking in the mirror of the Seine. Then we have the Rive Gauche (Left bank): the young and dynamic Latin Quarter, Saint-Germain-des-Pres an ideal place to stroll. The walk ends near the Eiffel Tower and during the ascension we really discover Paris with its monuments, its avenues, the meanders of the Seine. Finally we enjoy the unique sight of the entire city perspective.".

Remerciements' (Thanksgivings) is the fourth religious composition by Serge Lancen. It is a song of praise and thanksgiving, piously devoted to God. As the composer is very happy to live here on earth he wants to express this happiness in his musical language, accompanied by a text glorifying our Creator. The work is written for symphonic band. The text, quoted from or inspired by Psalms and prayers, can either be recited in whatever language or sung in French by a baritone or mezzo-soprano, accompanied by a harp or an organ. There is the 'Sign of the cross' which can be heard up to 12 times. The work consists of five movements: the first one is a call for prayer. In the second one the composer expresses his Thanksgivings to God. This movement is taken from Lancen's 'Poeme Oecumenique' (1975) then sung by a soprano accompanied by symphony orchestra. Now it is only played by the band. The third movement is a homage to God using the theme of the 'Benedicamus Domino', dating from the tenth century and already quoted in the introduction. The fourth movement is serious and moving, it implores the beloved ones who have left us. The finale glorifies God. Hallelujah.

Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.011471100). Serge Lancen (Paris 1922) undoubtedly belongs to the top of contemporary European wind music composers. His MANHATTAN SYMPHONY (1962), CAP KENNEDY (1970), SYMPHONIE DE L'EAU (1986) and MISSA SOLEMNIS (1989) are now part of the classical modern symphonic band repertoire. Lancen always writes in the French tradition and is often inspired by folkore, the beauty of the French landscapes and even the great architectural monuments of his country. In this fine suite of four symphonic sketches he was inspired by the splendid site of the 'MONT SAINT-MICHEL'. The work dates from 1976 and was premiered by the French National Police band, conducted by Pierre Bigot, at a concert in the Paris 'Palais des Congres' on May the 4th 1977. It evokes the splendour of one of Western Europe's great monumental abbeys. The mount arises amidst a symphony of mist and sand; the visitor goes through the main gate and enters the medieval town. He walks up to the abbey church and discovers the magnificent panorama. He recovers some time in an unexpected patch of green and admires the mighty fortress. Finally he reaches the actual abbey and visits the inspiring church and the sober refectory. At sunset, the abbey complex casts fanciful shadows on the beach and soon, in the light of the spots, the spire with the Archangel Michael lits up, high above the sea and the sand, right on the border between Normandy and Brittany.

The one movement symphonic poem Le Chant de l'Arbre (The Song of the Tree), dedicated to the composer's friend Thirault, was also commissioned by the French Government. This composition, published in 1980, was premiered at the Paris concert hall "Palais des Congres" on 6 June 1980 by the "Musique de la Police Nationale," conducted by Pierre Bigot. It was chosen as test piece for the seccion segunda of the 1989 wind band contest Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Valencia (Spain) and was recorded on compact disc by the famous Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, conducted by Frederick Fennell, in December 1988. The composer wrote the following comment: "The symphonic poem 'Le Chant de l'Arbre' is a tribute to the life of a tree throughout the seasons. In summer, the tree is sparkling in the sunlight although violent thunderstorms make it shake seriously from time to time. When autumn has come, its leaves turn golden before they fall and whirl around before falling on the ground. Then winter sleep takes hold of the tree. Finally here is spring again and everything regenerates so the tree starts blooming again.".

The new version was created by the same musicians in Paris in october 1981. This work was composed for a small wind ensemble.

Instrumental music is in search of its independence: the content was so to say a musical invocation. The Ricercare in this case is an invocation of the various themes - seemingly contradictory - yet forming a symphonic unity, which is attained by their contrast and their dialogue in counterpoint. One of these themes is formed by the tones B - A - C - H (B = German for B-flat; H = German for B-natural). This Ricercare has nothing to do with the old Motet character.
