Chôros, opus 61 (1994-95) for solo violin by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Violin. Latin, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10465). "Chôros for solo violin is in seven sections. I. Chôro vivo II. Sambinha chorôso III. Valsa lenta IV. Valsa serenata V . Polca-chôro VI. Valsa graciosa VII. Chôro reprise When Daniel Stepner commissioned me to write a work for solo violin, I of course went straight to the Solo Partitas by JS Bach for inspiration. The Brazilian chôro masters - Heitor Villa-Lobos, Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, and Zequinha Abreu - also wrote their wonderful music with ""old Bach"" in mind. Under these two influences I went to work, shamelessly borrowing from both. Formally, the chôro patterns itself after the baroque dance suite. In my work, the movements - chôro vivo, sambinha chorôso, valsa lenta, valsa serenata, polca-chôro, valsa graciosa, and chôro reprise - are, respectively, similar in character to the allemande, courante, sarabande, menuet I, gavotte, menuet II, and gigue. The spirit of the music, however, leans toward the Brazilians rather than Bach. The first two movements are lively sambas, followed by three typical old-fashioned ""sentimental"" waltzes and a polka. Instead of a gigue, the last movement is a repeat, but shorter version, of the first, bringing the whole to a close.". Stabat Serban for solo viola by Douglas DaSilva. For Viola. Instructional, Secular, 20th Century, World, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Solo Part, Score. Burke & Bagley #BB105. Published by Burke & Bagley (S0.10463). "I was asked to compose this piece by cellist/composer Serban Nichifor for his wife Liana Alexander, who died in 2011. Serbanʼs grief and his way of expressing it, through proclamations of sempiternal love for his late wife, in many ways reminds me of my father, who lost my mother in 2003. From a compositional standpoint I set out to explore and express the powerful and conflicting emotions associated with grief/loss of a loved one. These emotions are often described as ""stages"" and I am sure that in many cases this is accurate. However, it is probably universal to have these emotions mixed together creating something greater (or worse) than the individual emotions; something that we can call grief. I composed these in their present order as I explored these emotions within myself. This was a challenging, and at times, not-so-pleasant experience for me (must we suffer for our art?) In the end, though, I am satisfied with the results and am honored that Serban gave me the chance to do this. Part I: Denial- This isnʼt as unreasonable as it may appear. Human resilience will encourage one to continue life as usual. As if there has been no loss. This is why I have quoted a small phrase from Liana Alexandraʼs ""Melody"" and base this first movement upon it. We hear Liana speaking to us directly as if nothing has changed. Part II: Anger-The rapid pace of this angry piece is repeatedly interrupted by moments of reflection, the other emotions related to grief are constantly interfering with the need to send the hurt outward, expressed in the simplest, most primal of the emotions! Part III: Depression-When a soul-mate is lost, one feels ripped apart, only half of you is left, never whole again. This part is performed almost entirely without the use of the left hand, symbolizing the loss. Part IV: Acceptance- Of all of these ""stages,"" this is probably the most isolate and seemingly impossible to achieve. This is the inevitable that is never seen.". Sayonara: A Brazilian Farewell by Douglas DaSilva. For Piano, Violin. Instructional, Secular, 20th Century, World, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Set of Parts, Score. Burke & Bagley #BB124. Published by Burke & Bagley (S0.10460). "As the title states, this piece is one long goodbye. Part I: Corrida de Rato This literally means ""rat-race"" in Portuguese, which is a common and often accurate description of how we as musicians, parents and New Yorkers spend our days. Part II: Saudade This Brazilian word can be interpreted in a variety of ways: longing, missing. This movement represents that feeling associated with a heartfelt auf Wiedersehen! with its promise to ""be seeing you again."" Part III: Bota Fora This is the Brazilian Portuguese expression for a farewell Brazilian style! Enough talk of goodbyes: bottles will be opened and tears will be accompanied by dancing! Czysta Magia by Douglas DaSilva. For Violin. Instructional, Secular, 20th Century, World, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Solo Part, Score. Burke & Bagley #BB104. Published by Burke & Bagley (S0.10459). The title CZYSTA MAGIA (Pure Magic) is an expression of the magic that is in the fingers and soul of Katarzyna Bryla for whom this piece is dedicated! One only has to listen to her play to realize the truth of this! Ms. Bryla told be to write a piece as difficult as I like. I kept this in mind while composing and the idea gave me a liberating sense that I could challenge her as a player; but never did I attempt to make any of this more difficult than the music demands. Hopefully, I've been able to tap into something magic in this piece. I've used my favorite Brazilian rhythm: the Baiao and added a third beat to it making it a Valsa-Baiao. CZYSTA MAGIA I has a very simple ascending tetrachord melodic line with some details on expressive technique which should (mostly quietly) require an exploration of sounds to find the magic spell that Is being conjured here. CZYSTA MAGIA II is in Brazilian choro form: I've taken liberties with the repeats; but have kept the form AABBACCA. It is the spell of part I put into action!
