Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.011964110). This Mass has been dedicated to His Holyness Pope John Paul II, to witness Lancens deep and respectful admiration for the Holy Father. The work was composed in 1986 and written for two solo voices: a soprano and a baryton-Martin (high baritone), mixed choir, harp (ad libitum) and symphonic band or organ. It has ten parts: INTROIT - KYRIE - GLORIA - OFFERTORIUM - SANCTUS - PATER NOSTER - AGNUS DEI - COMMUNIO - DEO GRATIAS - and as final part an ALLELUIA. Lancen expressed his views about this Mass as follows: 'The most important aspect of the Mass is the praising of God and the sacrificing to God; that is why I thought it suitable to use both the themes of the Sanctus and the Offertorium in writing the Introitus. It seemed to me also quite logical that the initial themes of the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei would be rather similar as these are two moments where the priest and the worshippers invoke God. The composition ends with a brilliant Alleluia in which I also briefly quote the theme of the Sanctus.' This Mass was premiered on 27 may 1989 at 'Our Lady's Church' in Maastricht, The Netherlands, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Roman Catholic Band Federation of the Limburg County. The Bishop Castermans celebrated the Mass, whereas Jan Cober conducted this first performance. The Missa Solemnis is an alternation of meditating, though often impressive, orchestral passages with angelical choral sounds and the pious singing of both soloists. This may not be the type of music we usually expect from Serge Lancen, but nevertheless the composer remains faithful to his own typical style of composition. You can call this work romantic, though it surely is 'contemporary' or, why not, 'from all times'. The instrumentation is varied and extremely rich, mostly due to Lancen's typical use of 'wind band colours'. This Latin Mass suits perfectly well in the tradition of Roman-Catholic Masses that have been written by several great composers.

Concerto Pour Hautbois by Serge Lancen. For Concert Band. Oboe/Bassoon Solo and Wind band / Solo Concerts. Solo and Band Series. Grade 5. Score and Parts. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.012330110). The 'Concerto pour Hautbois' was written in 1991. In fact, it is a new version of the 'Concerto for Harmonica and Symphony Orchestra' commissioned by the famous harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler in 1954. The latter also created it in Birmingham (England) the same year. There is no other oboe part in the band, in order to hold the tone color of the solo instrument in the spotlight.

Turandot Suite by Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924). Arranged by Jos van de Braak. For Concert Band. Grade 6. Full score and set of parts. Duration 19:00. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM052-SET). In 1905 the Italian born composer Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) composed incidental music to Gozzi's fable Turandot - the story of the Chinese princess - of which he extracted in the same year an orchestral suite. Later in his career he returned to the subject and composed an opera on it (1916-1917). The original Turandot suite consists of eight movements of which four are selected for this transcription.

The Valencian Widow (Large Suite (five movements)). By Aram Ilyich Khachaturian (1903-1978). Arranged by Erik Somers. For Concert Band. Grade 5. Full score and set of parts. Duration 17:30. We may regret Khatchaturian's delay in bringing this music before a wider audience: it is one of the best of his lighter scores and there is no reason why it should not have enjoyed the popularity of Masquerade. Erik Somers has made a wonderful transcription of this suite that is available in two versions: a small suite in three movements and a large suite in five movements.

Published by Baton Music (BF.BM177-SET). Inspired by one of his students and his later wife, Ottorino Ottorino Respighi composed in 1922 Vetrate di Chiesa (The Church Windows). This four movement Symphonic Suite is based on Gregorian melodies. It's a typical Ottorino Respighi composition, with all of his characteristic colours, extreme dynamics and beautiful melodies.

Sinfonia Sevillana by Joaquin Turina (1882-1949). Arranged by Douglas McLain. For Concert Band. Grade 5. Full score and set of parts. Duration 23:00. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM297-SET). Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) along with Granados, Albeniz and Manuel de Falla, was a defining voice in Spanish music. His music is typically very lyrical and deeply inspired by the rich musical heritage of his native Seville. The Sinfonia Sevillana was composed in 1920 and appeared almost simultaneously with another orchestral masterpiece, the Danzas fantasticas. Both pieces are dedicated to the Spanish poet Jose Mas. The Sinfonia Sevillana, is a masterful portrait of Turina's home city. Its three movements beautifully evoke the Sevillan countryside, displaying the city in a wide range of moods and vibrant colors.

Orff war fasziniert von der ursprunglichen Kraft und Bildhaftigkeit der mittelalterlichen Liedersammlung, die im 13. Jahrhundert im Kloster Benediktbeuern angelegt wurde. "Carmina Burana sind unser Mittelalter", so Orff 1970 in einem Interview. "Wenn heute die Carmina Burana - ich darf es ruhig sagen - in aller Welt gespielt werden, so ist mir meine Musik nicht so wichtig, sondern dass die abendlandische Kraft dieses Dichtwerkes bindend verstanden wird, und dass dieses wieder bindend wirkt."
