Published by Beriato Music (BT.0506-1-286). Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is mainly known for his symphonic poems such as Don Juan, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben,... However, he also wrote many operas and Der Rosenkavalier (created in 1911 in Dresden) with a libretto by Von Hofmannsthal is probably the most popular of them all. In our Jan Cober Series, we would like to present this very special arrangement of the suite from Der Rosenkavalier. Jan Cober worked extensively on this arrangement and carefully composed this new suite. In this respect, he preserved the necessary mood and vitality of Strausss music so it could be played by a brass band. He has done this without losing sight of the musical tension of the original.

He had fallen in love with the marvellous sonorities of a symphonic band and wanted to join the wind players in a concert, so he wrote this concerto and gave it a parade character. PARADE CONCERTO was premiered in 1972 by Pierre NIMAX in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxemburg), G. WAGNER conducting. That same year the composer performed it for the first time, in Spain with the Banda Primitiva from Lliria, Jan MOLENAAR conducting. He has performed it since in many countries, including France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxemburg, Norway and the USA.

This arrangement by Marcel Peeters is a compilation of tunes from "Porgy and Bess" and is meant as a tribute to one of the greatest composers of entertainment music of the 20th century. The performance of this 20 minute long "Porgy and Bess Medley" requires quite some virtuosity and skill.

Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.011787120). This symphony was composed in 1984 and is dedicated to the great French composer Ida Gotkovsky a good friend of the Lancen family. It was the test piece in the 'Seccion Primera' of the famous Spanish wind band contest Certamen International de Bandes de Musica Ciudad de Vaencia and was recorded by the Symphonic Band of the Maastricht Conservatory of Music conducted by Sef Pijpers. Serge Lancen himself related the genesis of this symphony as follows: 'When I was twelve years old I had started composing a piece which described the cycle of the water. The project was however abandoned and only some themes were left unused. In July 1983, I went by boat to the WASBE conference in Skien, Norway and was seduced by the North Sea. During the travel a musical theme was born and was the trigger for the realisation of my ancient project which I still fancied. The 'Symphonie de l'eau'. is in fact a musical description of the cycle of the water which the composer defines as follows: 'A slight mist rises and turns into a cloud. Water drops fall on the mountain. A brooklet rises and clears a way throughout the alpine pastures. Soon other small watercourses join the original brook that is now reinforced as to become a real roaring mountain river falling in a lake amidst a quiet and poetic surrounding. The water turns again into a river when leaving the lake and gradually becomes a big stream which majestically flows towards the sea. A slight mist is rising from the huge surface and so the cycle of the water starts all over again.'.

Jesus' Blut hat mich noch nie im Stich gelassen, dies eine weiss ich gewiss, weil er mich so liebt." Dieses Lied eines Londoner Stadtstreichers wurde 1993 mit Tom Waits ein Hit in den englischen Charts. Gavin Bryars war vom kurzen melancholischen Gesang, den er 1971 einem Dokumentarfilm uber Obdachlose entnommen hatte, so sehr fasziniert, dass er das Lied 180-mal wiederholte und mit einer ruhigen, harmonisch klingenden Orchestermusik unterlegte. Bryars' Kompositionen vermitteln dem Horer das Gefuhl einer Bildbetrachtung. Es wird namlich nur ein bestimmter Zustand beleuchtet, hier die religiosen Gefuhle des Stadtstreichers. Daher ist diese Musik zur Untermalung im Film oder Ballett pradestiniert.

The Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967) based almost all his works on traditional Hungarian folk music, as did his contemporary and compatriot Bela Bartok. His Peacock Variations (1939) are based on the melody of one of the oldest Hungarian traditional songs Felszallott a Pava, which means peacock in Hungarian, and consists of numerous variations on the main theme. Conductor and arranger Jan Cober has arranged a faithful version of this superb work.
